Gift This: Glam Glossies for All

New York Magazine

$19.97 (cover price $161.50-- save 87%!)
Available at: magazines.com

Who: any semi-literate person on your gift list

What: a glam glossy picked just for him or her

Why: I know, in the age of iPhone, FaceBook and TiVo, there is little need for conventional magazines. But, I still love me a good glossy. There's something about the gorgeous photography, the professionally edited stories and heft of the pages on my lap that stimulates a part of my brain that electronic toys just can't. And I like to share the feeling.

Without fail, a few people on my gift list will receive 12 fun months of a glammy glossy magazine. It's a gift that gives all year long and, if chosen well, can both compliment the giftee's style and reflect on the gifter's good taste. Oh, and did I mention that magazine subscriptions are insanely affordable?

So, with the hundreds of mainstream magazines to chose from, what to gift? I like to stick to the entertaining, if slightly frivolous titles for gifting. Yes, The Economist is a fab magazine, but it's also kind of like getting a textbook in your Christmas stocking. A few of my favorite glossies for gifting are below, but this is the kind of gift that can really be tailored to each individual so be creative.

For the Ladies:
Lucky for the shopaholic. Vogue for the slave to style. Elle for the jet set fashionista. Town & Country for the socialite.

For the Teen Girl:
Nylon for the late-teens trendsetter. Seventeen for the early-teens pop princess. Teen Vogue for the fashionista-in-training.

For the Guys:
GQ or Details for the pop culture guy. Esquire for the guy with brains and beauty. Men's Health for the guy interested in strong mind and body.

For the Teen Boy:
Sports Illustrated for the jock. Blender for the music obsessed. Motor Trend for the car kid.

For All:
Vanity Fair for pop culture meets real journalism. Bon Appetit for the foodie. New York Magazine for the city sophisticate. Robb Report for the luxe-a-holic. Rolling Stone for the music lover. New Yorker for art, culture and politics. Travel+Leisure for the world traveler.
