Under $100: RSVP Ivana Satin Pumps

Thursday, May 27, 2010 • Permalink •

rsvp - Ivana (Champagne Satin) - Footwear
RSVP Ivana Pump

$89.00
Available at: zappos.com

Summer is officially upon us, and you know what that means: weddings. If I've had one, I've had 15 women ask me for advice about what to wear to assorted weddings. I promise, I'm still cooking up a suggestion or two for all-purpose wedding guest dresses. But, in the meantime, I've found a pair of special occasion shoes that will make any basic dress look suddenly very occasion-worthy.

The RSVP Ivana Pump features a tulle-covered satin upper and a stylish frayed tulle rosette detail. The looks is both dressy and a little rocker-chic thanks to the frayed detail and champagne color. I'd pair this shoe with a basic sheath dress for a daytime event, or a slip dress for an evening affair. At just $89, this affordable shoe more than pays for itself with its outfit-transforming ability.

Splurge: Kris van Assche Wrap Heels

KRIS VAN ASSCHE WRAP HEELS
Kris van Assche Wrap Heels

$730.00
Available at: ssense.com

Do you remember that Sex and the City episode where Carrie was trying to get the money together to buy her apartment? There's a scene when Carrie realizes that every drop of her money for years has gone into her expansive shoe collection rather than her savings. She couldn't afford to buy her apartment. She was literally going to end up as the little old lady who lived in her shoes. I have a funny feeling that's going to be me someday. And shoes like this will have been to blame.

I can't resist a truly unique shoe, like these Wrap Heels from Kris van Assche. I was just aimlessly browsing around SSense when these ahh-mazing shoes pretty much jumped up and grabbed me. Well, more or less. They are so, so gorgeous. From the deliciously complex wraparound straps, to the artfully scuffed pointed toe, to the super tall tongue... they truly one-of-a-kind. Even the closure is standout-- it's a stud pin rather than a traditional buckle! Plus, these platform shoes feature a fabulous 5" heel, my favorite height. I must have these shoes. They're so completely splurge-worthy.

Fashion Cents: What to Wear on a Movie Date

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 • Permalink •

--By Kimberly Turner

This summer is full of blockbuster movies and even if you are not in the movie, you do have a starring role. Remember, if you are on a date, you are his leading lady and unless the movie is Lady and the Tramp, you should look good. Now wait! Even in Lady and the Tramp the female lead was still a lady. So really, you have no excuses. So here are a few tips to make sure you have the spotlight during your movie date:

Dress comfortably. That doesn’t mean jeans or sweats. Try a dress.

No soundtrack. I would hate to see you get put out of the theatre so tone down the accessories.

Add height. Heels are a great way to show off your shapely legs plus they help when it comes to the goodnight kiss and your leading man is tall.

Now watch the video for details on the tips. Plus there is a bonus tip that you don’t want to miss.

See you at the movies!

Available at: 6pm.com

Looking for a fabulous shoe quick fix for under a $100? Check out this super cute new find...

You may associate jelly shoes with your youth, but the childhood staple has been making a strong appearance in the grown-up footwear market thanks to stylish takes by high end labels like Diane von Furstenberg and Stuart Weitzman. With more serious labels jumping right on board, is it any wonder that the playful Marc by Marc Jacobs label has gone jelly shoes wild?

These Marc by Marc Jacobs 683167 jelly skimmer flats are both adorable and strangely practical. I mean, what what better to wear during summer rain storms? London-bound ladies, I'm talking to you. Been there, done that, glad I brought rubber shoes. These Marc by Marc jellies feature a vinyl upper with leather footbed and sole and are available in blue, pink, yellow and clear styles. All four colors are priced at just $81.20-- 70% off retail price.

Best Seller: Halston Heritage Knit Cocktail Dress

Halston Heritage Stretch Knit Cocktail Dress
Halston Heritage Knit Cocktail Dress

$325.00
Available at: saks.com

With Sex and the City 2 premiering this week, it really doesn't surprise me that a dress that was prominently featured in the set photos and movie trailers is topping the Saks best sellers list. Who doesn't want to snag Carrie's iconic style?

Movie connections aside, this Halston Heritage Knit Cocktail Dress really is a show stopper. The deceptively simple cut highlights a woman's best assets in that easy-to-recognize, flowy Halston kind of way. The off-white color is so perfect for summer and could be dressed up with crazy SATC-worthy heels or dressed down with simple sandals, like the Mia Espadrilles we highlighted last week in our Under $100 series. Plus, the new Halston Heritage line is very accessibly priced-- this sleek cocktail frock will set you back a mere $325, which is insanely affordable compared to the main Halston label. Yes, that clearly adds up to a best seller. And, post-SATC release, I'm sure this dress will go from best seller to sell out.

Summer Fashion: Hot Hair Accessories

Tasha Icy Petals Headband
Tasha Icy Petals Headband

$32.00
Available at: nordstrom.com

Over the years I have gotten a lot of experience in the hair department. Experimenting with different hair dos and hair colors has forced me to rely heavily on hair accessories to get through the bad days. When there is a hair jam, I’m quick to grab a flower or a cute head band to help keep my frizzy hair pulled back and tamed for the day. It’s nice to have immediate access to a little piece of material that makes it possible to turn my day upside down and make me look fabulous and hip. Whether you think they're too girly or not, hair pins and headbands are affordable and easy to find. No matter what your fashion style is you’ll be able to wear them out and learn to embrace them.

Usually I go from subtle to very flashy when I am highlighting products, but in this case I’m going to switch it up. If you have a big night out or are dressed down and want to spice it up on a bad (or good) hair day try this lovely Tasha ‘Icy Petals’ Headband. The Icy Petals headband has faceted stones with glitzy bling that forms flower petals. The flower looks gorgeous on top of a silk band-- nothing like frosting on your hair on a warm summer day. But, you’ll be looking anything but cool with this uber sexy and fun headband.

Bebe Stone and Print Headband
Bebe Stone & Print Headband

$39.00
Available at: bebe.com

Next up I am featuring a Stone and Print Headband from Bebe that’s to die for! I love the color combination of electric blue and pink-- too fun! This is a retro-inspired headband that is bright enough to wear by itself. The shiny stones are on a wide headband that arches the crown of your head in a boho summer style. The round oval and square dots add a lot of dimension and spunk to the hair.

Ever aspired to be a salsa dancer? If the answer is yes then you may want to spend the price of a happy meal on the French Kiss Rose Hair Clip. The festive red rose deserves to be flaunted with its gorgeous deep color and incredible sass. I think this would look wonderful in a sophisticated bun or a messy do off to the side. Whatever you decide, you’ll sure be the talk of the setting.

Nine West Statement Pump

$49.99 (was $79-- save 37%!)
Available at: ninewest.com

Looking for a fabulous shoe quick fix for under a $100? Check out this super cute new find...

One of the best parts of summer, fashion speaking, is the fact that you really can get away with a lot more experimental style during the warm weather months. I'm not sure how or why, but I definitely take advantage. This shoe find falls clearly within the range of experimental fashion... thankfully the price is right for going out on a sartorial limb.

The Nine West Statement Pump is pretty aptly named. This stand-out shoe features a black brushstroke plaid pattern on a white background, with delicate pleating detail added to the faux-patent leather exterior. The result is a super shiny shoe that will basically create an outfit. I'd pair this funky shoe with a basic solid color dress for a graphic party look. Or, try this pump with cropped pants for a playful daytime outfit.

New & Hot: Ella Moss Parasol Pintuck Top

Ella Moss Parasol Pintuck Top
Ella Moss Parasol Pintuck Top

$98.00
Available at: ellamoss.com

I've never been much for the boho summer look. You know, the flowing long skirts and loose linen tops. But, something about this new-- and admittedly slightly boho-- Ella Moss top has reeled me in.

The Ella Moss Parasol Pintuck Top has a classic, loose summery fit that would be right at home on boho-chic fashionistas like Kate Moss and Nicole Richie. But, this top also has just enough structure, thanks to pristine pintucks and cuffed sleeves, to paint a totally different picture if you switch up what you wear it with. As styled here, tucked into basic bootcut jeans, this Ella Moss blouse takes on a more refined swagger. I do love a wardrobe item that is so versatile that it can play two totally different looks with a quick switch of accompaniments. That alone makes it well worth the price tag.

Under $100: Steve Madden Sadiee Pump

Steve Madden Sadiee Pump

$69.95 (was $89.95-- save 22%!)
Available at: stevemadden.com

Looking for a fabulous shoe quick fix for under a $100? Check out this super cute new find...

I'm loving the Steve Madden Sadiee Pump in Ivory leather for a few reasons. First, the tiny (by my standards) 2.5" heel and rounded toe makes this pump a little more casual. Paired with skinny jeans, the Sadiee will create a simple weekend silhouette rather than the vampy look that would result from a more statuesque 4"+ heel. Second, I adore the unique distressed ivory leather. These pumps are far from pristine. It almost looks like someone took some sandpaper and a grease rag to these shoes, and it works! Again, it just adds to the relaxed feel. Finally, I really like the price. Already affordable at full price, now that they are on sale the Steve Madden Sadiee pumps are a true steal.

Although I love getting dressed every day, I hate having to think too much about my clothes. Sound counterintuitive? Really, it's not. I just prefer to have a closet full of items that stand out all on their own, without having to put a lot of thought into how to make them shine. I'd rather put the work into finding perfect wardrobe additions, not making lackluster items look better. A great example of my fashion strategy: the Rachel Rachel Roy Lattice Top.

This brand new top, currently available for preorder, truly does stand all on its own. I'd pair this stylish top with basic skinny jeans and simple super high black heels for an instant California-style night out look. Tucked into a black pencil skirt, this top would become part of a chic workday look that would play well in a more creative office environment. And, since the top is already full of intricate details, you won't need to think about styling layers or choosing several coordinating accessories in order to make your outfit sing. Really, this top does all of the fashion heavy lifting for you.

And really, this kind of price makes buying a pair of bright yellow shoes on a whim sound almost sane. I'd pair these with jeans and a simple tank or tee to add a little warm weather zip to an otherwise basic outfit. You know that feeling when you find the perfect fashion basic, the kind that you feel compelled to wear all the time because it goes so well with everything in your wardrobe... and then it falls apart? Yeah, that happened to me.

About a year ago I found a perfect slouchy deep-v tee shirt at Banana Republic. It had the ideal boyfriend-style fit and the fabric sat somewhere right in between a slub cotton and and a burnout style. You know, just funky enough. I wore it at least once a week for months and months. But, recently, it has began to look worn and yellow. I tried just about every trick in the book to revitalize it, but to no avail. My shirt has died.

I've been so sad because I haven't been able to find a suitable replacement. But, I'm feeling a gush of relief now that I've located what appears to be the perfect slouchy white tee. The Bop Basics Cotton Slub Tee from the ShopBop.com house label has the same boyfriend fit and deep-v of my favorite tee, and a similarly semi-affordable pricetag, but with the added bonus that it is actually in stock and ready to be purchased. Ahhh, my wardrobe is saved. And I'm happy to share my find with all of you, just in case you too are in need of an emergency white tee replacement. Really, I can't be the only one.

New & Hot: Fenton/Fallon for J.Crew

Monday, May 17, 2010 • Permalink •

This latest high/low designer collaboration will add more than a little sparkle to your wardrobe. NYC-based jewelry designer Dana Lorenz, the creative genius behind the Fenton and Fallon jewelry lines, has partnered with mall-staple J.Crew to create a full line of punky-chic designs.

The line, Fenton/Fallon for J.Crew, features necklaces, bracelets and earrings in Lorenz's signature tangled chain style. Prices range from $95 to $295. Sure, that's not cheap for fashion jewelry, but it is significantly more affordable than Fenton and Fallon lines, which can set you back $1000 or more per piece. This new line is a great way to get that slightly subversive accessory look without investing in a high dollar line.

I have to admit, when I first ran across these Current Elliott Captain Trousers in Army I couldn't help but to think that they give off almost the exact same vibe as this season's must-have J Brand Houlihan Cargos... but for about $70 less. Not that these cropped trousers aren't super stylish and worthy of adoration on their own, they just remind me a lot of a certain other pair of twill pants.

Comparisons to the pant of the summer aside, these Current Elliott trousers are pretty ideal for summer. They have an effortless slouch that could easily be either dressed up or dressed down, depending on your choice of top and accessories. Also, they do fit in well with the military / utilitarian trends that are so big for spring and summer this year. And, the fact that they are the most affordable of the designer cropped twill pants that I've seen floating around this season definitely makes them worthy of some extra attention.

$156.00
Available at: saks.com

The artfully cut out sweater trend may have originated on the runway courtesy of Alexander Wang, but this newer, lower-priced version of the trend actually strikes me as being more wearable. No wonder it's a best seller.

The Erin Wasson X RVCA Give Me Rapture Sweater is crafted from a cotton / viscose blend and features a symmetrical cut out pattern that was clearly influenced by the Spring 2010 runway. At just $156, this sweater is less than half the price of its runway-ready counterpart, but I find it to be a more versatile option.

The pale butter color creates a neutral backdrop for the in-your-face cut outs and will pair well with many different colors, unlike the red and white cut out sweater from the Wang show. Plus, the classic crewneck shape goes miles towards tempering the otherwise daring trend. And I'm clearly not the only person loving this fun sweater-- it's currently a best seller in the Contemporary section at Saks.com.

Fashion Cents: How to Tell if Your Clothing is Too Tight or Too Small

Wednesday, May 12, 2010 • Permalink •

--By Kimberly Turner

You have to be thinking this is never my issue. But come on, we all do at least one of the Top 7. Right? Think about it. Hmmm…your jeans always leave imprints on your body because they are so tight. Or you opted to wear something open not because it looked more fashionable but because you couldn’t close it. Well, trust me, if you know it doesn’t fit so does everyone looking at you. So quit trying to fool yourself because you aren’t fooling anyone else. (Watch the video to see all 7 ways to tell if something is too tight or too small.)

By some fluke, you really don’t experience any of those issues then pass this video on to your office mate who is about to pop that button on her pants any minute now. Make sense?

New & Hot: Joe's Jeans Stella Zipper Flat

Joe's Jeans Stella Zipper Flats
Joe's Jeans Stella Zipper Flat

$120.00
Available at: shopbop.com

I am slowly, reluctantly learning to embrace flats. I have not come to this place easily or without much resistance. I like being really, really tall. But, I also like walking absolutely everywhere. The two are not compatible. So, flats it is.

But, I refuse to wear ugly shoes. So, I've been keeping an eye out for stylish, modern flats that look more runway-ready than orthopedic. This new pair from the Joe's Jeans shoe line is sufficiently stylish, but still quite affordable, so you don't have to feel like you are wasting your Loubie budget on flats. That would be tragic.

The Joe's Jeans Stella Zipper Flat is a leather flat with a criss-cross zipper detail across the vamp and a zipper pull detail at the heel. The leather sole also features no-slip rubber patches, which makes this flat ideal for city walking, particularly up hill (oh, San Francisco, how I love you and your incline sidewalks).

Summer Fashion: Stylish Shorts for All

Walter Sandwashed Short
Walter Sandwashed Short

$168.00
Available at: couturecandy.com

This is a very nice time of year because I always take a weekend to re-organize my closet and put away my winter clothes to make my summer clothes more accessible. Although it takes a while to organize everything and decide what to box up for the next few months, it is a big stress reliever. With that said, one thing I’m definitely keeping accessible is my shorts. It has taken me a long time to gather a little short collection because I am so picky with them.

It seems hard to find a decent pair of stylish shorts these days. So many look like they belong on a twelve year old. And, I think I have reiterated the fact that I can’t stand cut-offs, unless you are on the beach. Of course, I don't shake my head in total disappointment when I see Cindy Crawford in cut-offs at the beach, but I'd rather see ladies wearing more versatile shorts out. Plus, Britney Spears kind of ruined cut-off shorts for me when she wore them while walking barefoot across liquor store parking lots in Santa Monica.

Gearing away from trashy and heading to classy, I adore the Luna Linen Tie Jacket and Linen Tie Shorts from Venus.com. Linen is a great material to enter the summer in because it keeps you cool and doesn't stick to your thighs... and that’s the last thing you want to worry about in the heat. The jacket and shorts don't have to be purchased together, although they would look lovely worn as a duo. If separated, the jacket would look killer over a sundress and the tie shorts would look polished with a camisole or denim jacket. The prices for both items are mind blowing! The jacket is $27 and the shorts are $17.

Guess by Marciano Cresta Linen Cargo Short
Guess by Marciano Cresta Linen Shorts

$78.00
Available at: marciano.com

I know some gals who are downright terrified of shorts. For you ladies I’ve got the golden ticket: the Walter Sandwashed Short that looks like a skirt from the front and doesn’t put too much emphasis on the inner thigh. This is a sophisticated pair of shorts with draping in the front and the back; two back pockets with zippers to show off the backside. The front draping in combination with the material makes this appropriate for more than just a casual summer setting. This is a skort reinvented for 2010-- buy it, wear it and sass it while soaking up the sun.

If neither of the above mentioned shorts are casual enough for you, or seem far from your idea of comfortable, then give the “Cresta” Guess by Marciano linen cargo shorts a try. It combines all the best trends by being comfortable with a drawstring waist and a soft linen feel, and with the flattering cargo design and front and back pockets for the much needed chap stick. Now all you need is a nice sun-kissed tan to go with it.

Gap The gibson girl
Gap The Gibson Girl Tee

$44.50
Available at: gap.com

Unless you've been avoiding all forms of news coverage for the past week or so, you know that tis the season for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala. Sometimes referred to as the "Oscars of the fashion world," the Met Costume Institute Gala really is the see-and-be-seen fashion event of the season. The Gala also kicks off a new season for the Met's Costume Institute's themed exhibit. The theme for this year's Gala and exhibit is American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity.

The exhibit, which is scheduled to be on display from May 5 to August 15, explores the perceptions of the American woman from 1890 to 1940. As sponsor of the exhibit, Gap was very involved in the Gala-- from Gap EVP Patrick Robinson co-chairing the event, to Gap co-creating amazing gowns for several of the attendees. Gap is also taking a leading role in promoting and celebrating the exhibit by creating a limited edition line of tee shirts that support the exhibit's theme.

The Gap American Woman Tees each celebrate a classic female identity from the eras captured by the exhibit. Tees include The Gibson Girl, The Heiress, The Suffragist and The Screen Siren. The tees are priced from $34.50 to $44.50 and are only available for a limited time online and in select Gap stores.
