The Top 5 Fashion Inventions

We talk a lot about fashion classics here at Stiletto Jungle. Those indispensable items that belong in every wardrobe, and inevitably get reworked each season into new takes on the same old (yet fabulous) story. In fact, we talk about fashion classics so much that we often forget that what is now a classic was once an innovation.

When Sprint -- the first carrier to introduce 4G technology, which has revolutionized the mobile space -- asked me to write a post about fashion firsts to help commemorate the introduction of Spring 4G technology, I jumped at the chance. What a great opportunity to share with all of you some of the amazing fashion firsts that now influence nearly every amazing fashion find we talk about.

Picking the five best fashion inventions was incredibly hard. There are just so many fashion innovations to choose from, and each has such a fascinating story to tell. But, after weeks of agonizing, I narrowed it down to the five fashion innovations that continue to influence me most.

Diane von Furstenberg Wrap Dress

Available at: saks.com

1. The Wrap Dress
While there are many inventions that have revolutionized fashion, few have also risen to the level of creating a social movement. The wrap dress did just that. Created by Diane von Furstenberg in 1972, the wrap dress instantly became a wardrobe staple for legions of working women and came to symbolize "female power and freedom to an entire generation." The wrap dress now has a permanent home in the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

2. The Stiletto Heel
Although there is some dispute as to whether the stiletto heel was invented by Roger Vivier, Salvatore Ferragamo, or a now lesser-known shoe designer, it remains that the stiletto heel has transformed the footwear landscape and become a symbol of female power dressing. Without the stiletto heel, would we have women with hundreds of pair of shoes, half the puns in SATC, or the current Louboutin craze? I think not.

3. The Little Black Dress
No listing of the top fashion inventions would be complete without a reference to Coco Chanel, it's just a matter of picking which of her amazing contributions to highlight. The Little Black Dress made its debut as a drawing by Chanel in the May 1926 issue of Vogue magazine. Before Chanel exposed the fashion world to the LBD's simplicity and versatility, black as a clothing color had been used almost exclusively by servants and the clergy. Thanks to Coco Chanel's foresight, we now praise the Little Black Dress and proclaim anything and everything "the new black."

4. Le Smoking
Yves Saint Laurent has contributed much to the fashion world, but if we're going to talk about fashion inventions that have really changed the status quo, we have to talk Le Smoking. YSL's androgynous tuxedo pant / smoking jacket combination for women, introduced in 1966, not only became a forefather of the minimalist clothing style that we're still loving for Fall 2010, it showed us that pants on women can be sexy. Beyond that, without Le Smoking we wouldn't have the pantsuit, which dramatically altered the balance of power when it comes to women in traditionally male professions.

5. Denim Jeans
Denim the fabric, by most accounts, has been used continuously since the 17th century. But, it took a 23-year-old Bavarian immigrant to start the denim revolution. Levi Strauss's riveted blue denim "waist overalls" became the official uniform of working-class America and went on to play an important role in the myth of the American individuality. These days, many a fashionista has a closet full of $300+ designer denim...and we owe it all to Levi Strauss and his desire to outfit the working man.

Did I miss something big? Is there a fashion innovation you feel should be in the top five? Tell me all about it in the comments!

America’s first 4G phone is also the first to deliver download speeds up to 10x faster than 3G and be a mobile hotspot for up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices. Not to mention front and rear-facing cameras and the ability to stream live video to the Web. And you get access to over 65,000 apps you’ve come to expect from an Android. So the only question is, what will you do first with EVO? sprint.com/firsts

Magaschoni ash grey cashmere 'Infinity' scarf
Magaschoni Cashmere Infinity Scarf

$101.00 (was $168-- save 40%!)
Available at: bluefly.com

I love scarves. I wear them non-stop during the fall and winter... and well into spring. The cozy feeling of a super soft scarf is hard to beat. It's kind of like snuggling up in a favorite blanket all day. And, it doesn't hurt that a scarf can pull together a look in an instant.

After reading Natalie at Coquette's post on how French women wear scarves, I'm excited to give a new scarf look a try as soon as the first chilly days of fall set in. These Magaschoni Cashmere Infinity Scarves are like training wheels for the French scarf style -- a similar look, but without having to figure out what to do with those pesky scarf ends. The Magaschoni Cashmere Infinity Scarf comes in 5 colors, including versatile Ash Grey (pictured here), Ivory and Black. All 5 colors are currently available for $101, which is 40% off the retail price.

Review: CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara

Monday, August 30, 2010 • Permalink •

This is part 1 in a 3 part series reviewing the new CoverGirl Smoky Eye Look trio of products.

CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara
CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara

$8.50
Available at: drugstore.com

I'll admit, when it comes to eye makeup I'm a bit of a snob. But, when CoverGirl offered to let me review their new 3-part Smoky Eye Look, and share with all of you a chance to try out the new CoverGirl eye products, I took a chance. Truthfully, I've been kind of in love with the Drew Barrymore ads for CoverGirl eye products since they debuted. She looks so fabulous, and her smoky eye makeup is impeccable. So, armed with a pile of review samples, I set out to give CoverGirl eye makeup products a good once-over.

In order to be scientific, and prevent myself from developing a bias for all of the products based on the performance of just one or two, I tried each product separately in place of part of my normal eye makeup routine. I started by replacing my normal mascara with CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara in Very Black. This is my review:

Packaging and Instructions

The first thing I noticed about CoverGirl Lash Blast Mascara is that it has a crazy, bright orange rubber wand. The mascara is packaged with the wand separate from the actual tube, I'm sure to show off this unique approach to a mascara brush. Honestly, the fact that the wand is not already in the tube almost ruined the experience for me. Since I had to insert the wand into the tube the first time, the wand initially didn't have nearly enough mascara on it, causing me to assume that this "Very Black" mascara was actually very weak. Had CoverGirl pointed this out on the instructions, I would have had a much better initial reaction.

Texture and Feel

CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara has a clump-free formula that glides on quite easily. Once I got enough mascara on the wand to suit my taste, I found that the mascara went on evenly and didn't clump up or smear all over the place. I was able to apply two coats without any problems and the Lash Blast formula dried to a flexible consistency that didn't make my lashes feel brittle or hard. The soft lash feel lasted throughout the day and the formula didn't smudge or flake off. It removed easily with facial cleanser and warm water.

Results

Overall, I found that the CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume in Very Black had a suitably deep black color that lasted all day without smudging or flaking, while maintaining a soft lash feel. The overall effect was clean, which made this formula idea for daytime wear on my already very black lashes. Unfortunately, despite the fact that Very Black is billed as the more dramatic, nighttime-appropriate version of Lash Blast, it didn't have that sooty quality that I get from my favorite nighttime mascara. Therefore, I'd keep Lash Blast in Very Black for daytime wear, and switch to a more dramatic formula for night. Given the super affordable price and excellent all-day wear, I'd say that CoverGirl Lash Blast is an excellent mascara and perfect for everyday use.

Shop It: White House Black Market Fall New Arrivals

White House Black Market Red Crepe Jacket
White House Black Market
Red Crepe Jacket

$148.00
Available at: whitehouseblackmarket.com

White House Black Market is on fire this season with hot new arrivals! I just received the new catalog today and couldn’t stop staring at the cover. The cover features the Red Crepe Jacket along with its matching pencil skirt, topped off with a black leather stretch belt that was so in demand it has already sold out! But, that shouldn’t stop you or me from getting creative with another kind of belt. I randomly check out White House Black Market's items but after today’s impression, they left me with no choice but to make their website a regular pit stop.

How could I avoid showcasing the item that made me a believer? The Red Crepe Jacket is a stunning glamorous jacket that really brings back '50s charm and class with a modern twist. Speaking of twist, the jacket comes with a removable ruffle twirl and flower to spice it up for an evening soiree or a sassy luncheon. Either way, you decide whether it is necessary. The jacket has a matching Red Crepe Pencil Skirt that would look impeccable paired up together-- why say no to a power house suit? Lady in red walking through, and trust me everyone will get out of the way, unless they're too busy gawking at you.

White House Black Market Glass Pearl Bracelet
White House Black Market
Glass Pearl Bracelet

$54.00
Available at: whitehouseblackmarket.com

If simplicity speaks to you more than a deep red power suit, then the Glass Pearl Bracelet will entice you. The bounty of glass pearls and brilliant crystals make a huge statement for a wrist accessory. I am biased as a pearl lover, but this piece is super duper and I don’t think you’ll regret purchasing this outfit saver accessory. What I mean by that is that if you need to pull a look together this ultra bracelet could be the stunner. Purchase now and get the second piece of jewelry at 25% off. With this seasons new arrivals that definitely won’t be hard.

Lastly, as a perfect transition piece from summer to fall is the light Long Contrast Sweater. It’s a 6-pocket cardigan lavishly embellished with shimmering black tweed, frayed chiffon, tuxedo-pleated ribbon and silvertone chain. This style is very flattering, especially on gals with longer torsos-- wear with jeans or wear with slacks to work. I love the longer length on this cardigan, which makes it more versatile to wear at all occasions.

Unlisted Kenneth Cole Kiss-N-Tell Bootie

$69.00
Available at: piperlime.com

Looking for a fabulous shoe quick fix for under $100? Check out this super cute new find...

Caged bootie pumps are here to stay and this light brown pair offers up a slightly more refined, fall-inspired take on the spring and summer staple. The Unlisted Kenneth Cole Kiss-N-Tell Bootie gets high marks for comfort from buyers and the style gets a stamp of approval from super stylist Rachel Zoe -- it's one of her Piperlime Picks. I'm fond of this light brown shade, which I'd pair with thin ankle socks for that Marc Jacobs runway look, but it's also available in basic black. Both colors are available for just $69.00.

Best Seller: Benefit Dandelion Face Powder

Benefit Dandelion Face Powder

$28.00
Available at: benefit.com

This pale pink powder may look like a basic blush, but it's really a full-face refreshing powder. I've used the powder myself and can attest to its face-brightening properties... it's a best seller for a reason.

Currently listed as one of the top selling products at the Benefit online store, Benefit Dandelion Face Powder creates a pinky glow that mimics a combination of a freshly scrubbed face and a touch of sun. The flattering, slightly shimmery pale pink color flatters a range of complexions -- from porcelain pale to deep olive. Directions are to swirl the brush across the powder, tap excess and apply to the apples of the cheeks, following with a light brush across the rest of the face. It's easier than it sounds, and it's a great pick me up. One $28 box lasts just about forever.

New & Hot: Kain Label Mesh-Back Tunic

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 • Permalink •

Kain Label Mesh-Back Tunic
Kain Label Mesh-Back Tunic

$130.00
Available at: bergdorfgoodman.com

I've been seeing mesh-insert tees and sweatshirts pop up in several new arrivals sections lately. But, there's something about seeing a trend in the 5F - New Designers section at Bergdorf Goodman that cements a trend for me. In my fashion book, 5F can do no wrong. I'm sold.

I recently spotted this Kain Label Mesh-Back Tunic and it was love at first sight. From the front, this light tan modal tunic has a slouchy polish that looks luxe, but laid back. The back view is a whole different story. The mesh-insert racerback detail is super downtown, but in a kind of posh way that happens when NYC socialites roam around downtown. I'd wear this tunic with skinny jeans and hidden platform wedge booties for a chic night out look (hey, this is SF, we can get away with that). For less casual cities, this look would create a striking weekend style.

Splurge: Alexander McQueen Cashmere Blend Pencil Skirt

Tuesday, August 24, 2010 • Permalink •

Alexander McQueen Cashmere and wool-blend pencil skirt
Alexander McQueen Pencil Skirt

$795.00
Available at: net-a-porter.com

It's amazing how little designer touches can transform a closet staple into something really extraordinary. This new pencil skirt from Alexander McQueen is a perfect example.

The Alexander McQueen Cashmere Blend Pencil Skirt is crafted from a cashmere-wool blend, with a concealed back zipper and full lining. Really, when it's just words on paper... er, screen... it sounds like it could be any regular old pencil skirt. But, one look at the detailing clues you in to how special this skirt really is.

This McQueen pencil skirt features ruching detail at the sides and pintucking at the back. The result of the attention to detail is a superior fit that creates a slight trumpet shape, but in an unusual, fashion-forward way. This is one of those amazing pieces that can go to the office, but will clearly render you the most fashionable woman at work. That kind of fun wrapped up in a super classic piece that will deliver for seasons to come is well worth the splurge price tag.

Steal: Old Navy Faux-Suede Sweater Belt $19.50

Tuesday, August 24, 2010 • Permalink •

Old Navy Womens Faux-Suede Sweater Belts
Old Navy Faux-Suede Sweater Belt

$19.50
Available at: oldnavy.com

Belting a chunky sweater, cardigan or oversized button-down shirt creates a fashionable silhouette. Well, at least in those perfectly styled magazine photos. In real life, putting a belt over a sweater or shirt can create an uncomfortable, messy look thanks to that annoying belt overhang. No matter what contraption or adhesive scheme you put in place, that belt is going to come loose and drive you nuts. This new "sweater belt" solves the overhang problem at a steal of a price.

The Old Navy Faux-Suede Sweater Belt has a unique double eye-punch closure that allows you to adjust and close the belt without overhang. The wide style is perfect for even the most voluminous of winter sweaters, and it's available in three colors -- Brown (pictured here), Black and a deep purple called Plummy Mummy. But, I think the Brown color manages to look just a bit more expensive than the other colors. All three colors are available for just $19.50.

Under $100: Aldo Swendsen Wedge Booties

Monday, August 23, 2010 • Permalink •

Aldo - Swendsen (Light Grey) - Footwear
Aldo Swendsen Wedge Bootie

$60.00
Available at: zappos.com

Looking for a fabulous shoe quick fix for under $100? Check out this super cute new find...

It's nearly fall. You can tell by the phone book-sized September issues flooding the mailbox. Seriously, my September InStyle arrived and the rest of my mail had to go in the overflow boxes. But, I digress. It's time to start talking fall wish lists and these trendy, fall-perfect, and perfectly affordable Aldo Swendsen Wedge Booties are worth adding to the list.

These Swendsen booties feature a heather grey fabric upper with leather strap in back. They pull on and have a nicely sized 3" heel hidden wedge heel. The hidden covered wedge style reminds me of the high-dollar booties we're seeing for fall from labels like Opening Ceremony (at $515) and MM6 Maison Martin Margiela (at $530). But, these Aldo booties will set you back considerably less. I think that pretty much makes them a must-buy.

New & Hot: Rachel Rachel Roy Aries Leather Jacket

Monday, August 23, 2010 • Permalink •

Rachel Rachel Roy Aries Leather Jacket
Rachel Rachel Roy Aries Jacket

$299.00
Available at: rachelroy.com

The oversized lapel, fur (faux or otherwise) lined leather jacket is popping up all over the place for fall. The first version I saw was the Helmut Lang Chasm Shearling Jacket, which is gorgeous at $1,140. If I had an extra $1,140 sitting around, the Helmut Lang jacket would be pretty high up on my list. But, this new, more affordable take on the trend has a certain charm all its own.

The Rachel Rachel Roy Aries Leather Jacket features a genuine leather outer with faux curly lamb lining. It's available in sizes XS to XL for just $299, which makes it one of the most affordable of the genuine leather versions of this trend. And, while the Helmut Lang version is stunning, the coloring of this Rachel Rachel Roy jacket feels significantly more wearable for everyday occasions and much more likely to accommodate a sweater or other fall clothing underneath. Wearability, affordability and fashion-forward style really is a great combination of qualities.

New & Hot: Hawks by Geren Ford Fall 2010

HAWKS by Geren Ford Pleat Tee Tunic
Hawks by Geren Ford Pleat Tee

$19.99 (was $54-- save 38%!)
Available at: urbanoutfitters.com

The Hawks by Geren Ford Fall 2010 line recently debuted and it's a fun little treat.

For those of you new to Geren Ford, it's a mid-priced contemporary label found at retailers like ShopBop and Revolve Clothing. Geren Ford was founded in 2002 by Geren Lockhart, who was inspired by the "boho jet-set urban cultures" she encountered while traveling the world as an advertising exec.

Hawks by Geren Ford is the new, affordable Geren Ford diffusion line available exclusively at, and in partnership with, Urban Outfitters. When describing the Hawks by Geren Ford line, Geren had this to say: "It gives us different freedoms than our main line and being a loyal and regular Urban Outfitters customer myself, I really appreciated the company's dedication to telling an interesting and forward thinking story, connecting with their customers and offering affordable fashion forward clothing on a really consistent basis."

The Fall 2010 Hawks by Geren Ford line features fun, flirty options, including ruffled tops, rompers and kicky mini skirts. But, my favorites are the slouchy tops, which remind me most of the main Geren Ford line (albeit at a much lower price point). The Hawks by Geren Ford Pleat Tee pictured here is a loose-fitting rayon tee with a single pleat down one side. It's available in both Grey and Rose, and both colors are on sale for $19.99-- that's a far cry from the $150+ tees in the Geren Ford main line!

Fashion Cents: What to Wear to A Wedding

Wednesday, August 18, 2010 • Permalink •

--By Kimberly Turner

I just recently went to a wedding and was astonished by the appearance of the guests. As I looked around the room, I made some assumptions:

  1. Some people just don't care what they look including if they look like they are going to the bar and not a wedding. Jeans and cute tops might be perfect if you are toasting your next shot but not when the toast are for the bride and groom.

  2. Some people are mad that they weren't asked to be in the wedding or they are determined to get one more use out of their prom gowns. Some of the women looked really silly strolling down the aisle in a floor length gown solo and seating on the pew next to me. They should save the floor length gowns for the bridesmaids who are being escorted by groomsmen.

  3. Some people are mad at the bride (or jealous). Maybe they hate the fact that she got married first. So they pulled out all of the stops, including wearing white, to make sure they got noticed at the wedding.
Now if you don't see anything wrong with the above, definitely watch the video! NOW! And even if you have more sense than that, check it out so you can make sure you don't break any vows at the next wedding you attend. Make sense?

New & Hot: Aqua Faux Fur Zip-Front Vest

Aqua Faux Fur Zip-Front Vest
Aqua Faux Fur Zip-Front Vest

$138.00
Available at: bloomingdales.com

Faux fur, which was huge last fall and winter, is going to be even bigger for Fall 2010. I mean, c'mon, when Chanel sends head to toe faux fur down the runway you know it's going to be the year of faux!

I love faux fur. Once you move past trying to look real, just as Chanel did for Fall 2010, the possibilities become endless. Faux fur in wildly unnatural colors and textures has become a huge fashion statement-- it's so fun! I can't wait to snag both a faux fur vest and a jacket, and this Aqua Faux Fur Zip-Front Vest might be my first acquisition.

Aqua, the Bloomingdale's house contemporary label, does a wonderful job of translating runway trends into mid- to low-priced options. Aqua price tags rarely stray above $200 and the trends are spot on. This vest is proof positive. This cozy, snuggly faux fur vest comes in both Ivory (shown here) and Black, and at a price that is completely affordable. It could go rugged with the addition of army green skinny pants, or chic paired with fall's long, ladylike wide-leg trousers. Loves it.

Aw... got to love the summer. This past weekend I got to live through my roommate's exciting love life and helped her pack for a romantic weekend getaway. I thought it over and I realized the best way to keep it simple and stress free is to pack light, but well. "Well" meaning bringing a sexy, comfy teddy to sleep in and a bombshell maxi dress at night with some sandals that can amplify the simplest outfit. From my past experiences, every time I pack too much I can’t decide what to wear and make the mistake of taking too long to get ready. When it’s a weekend getaway it’s crucial to make every minute of the weekend count because it will fly by.

So, my number one item to take with you on a romantic weekend getaway is a sexy nighty. Why sleep in anything that's less than uber sexy? There is a way to be comfortable and absolutely hot in Venus.com’s adorable Semi-Sheer Nightgown. Whether you decide to be a sultry goddess in the black lace nighty or the cream colored one you’ll be sleeping like a sexy angel.

Mystique 1644 Flat Thong Sandals
Mystique 1644 Sandals

$140.00
Available at: piperlime.com

If that’s not enough to make your date swoon and leave him yearning to plan more weekend getaways, wait till he sees you looking stunning in a V-Neck Halter Jersey Dress. This bombshell dress from Victoria's Secret is a floral explosion with its huge, bright exotic flowers. You’ll be strutting around with a dress that will accentuate even the slightest tan with its turquoise, orange, white, and purple flower petals. My favorite part about bringing a dress like this along is that its fast and easy-- you throw it on and, voila, you look like a thousand bucks. It is fit to perfection with an empire waist and best of all it can be worn with a pair of sexy sandals so you can stroll anywhere without complaining about your feet.

Wondering what kind of sexy sandals you can wear? Well I’ve got that covered. Mystique 1644 sandals are one of my absolute favorites. Yes, they are a little pricey, but they are gorgeous. The leather thongs with ornate large yellow stones make this shoe a knock out with anything you wear. You can go without wearing heels for a whole month because these spiced up pair will replace most high stunners any day. Keeping your feet callous free and comfortable is a definite must when on a weekend getaway trying to keep high on the impression scale.

New & Hot: Cecilia de Bucourt Metal Rock Cuff

CECILIA DE BUCOURT Metal Rock Cuff
Cecilia du Bucourt Metal Rock Cuff

$128.00
Available at: shopbop.com

Leather cuffs were a novel jewelry idea when they first burst onto the scene several years ago: take something punk, make it luxe and take it mainstream. The trend started small. Then big players like Vita Fede got in on the action. Leather cuffs hit their stride. Then... well... overload. Everyone and their brother was suddenly offering a leather cuff as part of their line, and they all looked the exact same.

I don't dislike leather cuffs, in fact I have a Vita Fede quilted lambskin cuff that adore and wear regularly. But, I haven't been inspired to purchase any leather cuffs lately. However, this new leather cuff from Cecilia de Bucourt presents such a fresh take on the trend that it could inspire a leather cuff resurgence all on its own.

The Cecilia du Bucourt Metal Rock Cuff features antiqued metallic beads that give off the look of raw gold nuggets, plus draped chains, in addition to the snap-closure leather cuff base. The look is a little less precious than the standard stud-covered cuffs that have been all over lately, while maintaining a more upscale vibe. It presents a great combination of the leather cuff trend, with the equally desirable statement cuff trend. Plus, it doesn't hurt that this beaded cuff is inexplicably priced considerably lower than most of the "name brand" leather cuffs on the market.

How To: Get Lea Michele's Hair Style

Monday, August 16, 2010 • Permalink •

Lea Michele hair style at Teen Choice Awards
When it comes to Glee star Lea Michele, there's a lot to envy. The hit television show, the amazing voice... and that gorgeous, bouncy hair! Lea had her amazing tresses on full display at the recent Teen Choice Awards, where she paired a sparkly mini-dress covered in a leaf motif and nude sandals with beachy, wavy hair that had a ton of volume.

Lea Michele's Teen Choice Awards hair style was created by stylist Mark Townsend using Dove hair care products. Dove is the official hair care sponsor of the Glee Live Concert Tour and has, apparently, been quite involved in helping the Glee cast achieve their star-perfect hair looks. When it came to her Teen Choice Awards look, though, Mark gave all the credit to Lea: "Lea and I often pull inspiration for her looks from a variety of fashion, beauty and Hollywood imagery. But for the Teen Choice Awards, Lea was the inspiration. She’s young, modern, smart and sexy and her look really reflected that sensibility. It was a bold choice – we’ve never done this kind of super volume before, but it looked gorgeous."

Want to steal Lea Michele's hair style for yourself? Here's the step-by-step for how Mark Townsend created the look:
• Shampoo and condition with Dove Damage Therapy Volume Boost Shampoo and Conditioner the night before to leave hair looking healthy and full of body

• Distribute Dove Body & Lift Volumizing Mousse throughout and blow dry hair with round brush to add lift

• Divide hair into 5 sections: 1 top, 2 sides, 2 back

• Apply Dove Heat Defense Therapy Mist to individual sections immediately before applying curling iron to protect hair against heat styling damage

• Starting with the back section, use a double barrel curling iron on 3 inch sections of hair, letting the curled pieces fall and hair cool without pinning

• Continue to curl the entire head using the double barreled iron to create figure-eight style waves

• Warm a pea-sized amount of Dove Frizz Control Therapy Taming Cream between the palms of hands. Rake fingers through hair to distribute product evenly for shiny, beachy texture.

Lea Michele at the Teen Choice Awards
• Flip head upside down to slightly loosen up the look and spray Dove Unscented Extra Hold Hairspray with Natural Movement throughout
Mark's work on Lea Michele's hair style didn't stop at the end of the styling session. He also gave Lea some tips for what she could do to keep the style fresh throughout the night: "Right before she left her house, I gave Lea a mini Dove Hairspray to carry in her purse. For award shows we often change her look from red carpet to performance or if she is presenting, but since Lea was wearing the same style throughout the evening we needed it to last. I told Lea to spray the sides of her hair just before she got out of the car, for an added bit of staying power. She also had it on hand in case the look needed a boost post-show," Mark explained.

Preorder: Vince Sequin Front Sweatshirt

Vince Sequin Front Sweatshirt
Vince Sequin Front Sweatshirt

$275.00
Available at: nordstrom.com

Sequined sweatshirts are a great juxtaposition of super casual and super glam. Worn with boyfriend jeans and flat sandals, you have a weekend look that is still super fashionable. Pair a sequined sweatshirt with a mini or slim black pants and super high caged booties and you've got a glam going out look that is so comfortable you'll think you're sitting at home on your couch. Love it.

We've covered sequined sweatshirts before, but this new Vince Sequin Front Sweatshirt, currently available for preorder, is a little bit of something new. Rather than regular sequins, this Vince topper has a combination of tiny reflective golden sequins and larger, slightly more matte, silvery sequins. The effect is incredibly shiny and a little more funky than other sequin sweatshirts, plus, somehow, the color combination comes off looking more platinum than either silver or gold. For a sequin sweatshirt this unique and glam, I'd gladly pay Vince prices.

Julia Roberts in Eat Pray Love wearing Me and Ro Gold Cloud Earrings
Me&Ro Gold Cloud Earrings

$735.00
Available at: meandrojewelry.com

The much anticipated debut of Julia Roberts's newest movie Eat Pray Love, which is based on the bestselling novel, is this Friday. While most movie-goers are simply excited to see the movie at this point, I'm sure it won't take long for movie watchers to become interested in the clothing and accessories Julia wears throughout this lush, beautifully-filmed movie.

As you'd expect, a movie that counts exotic locations like Bali and Italy as a major part of the story line has equally gorgeous clothing and accessories to complement the natural beauty of the locations. We've got a sneak preview of some of the accessories from jewelry line Me&Ro-- earrings and bracelets, to be exact-- that Julia Roberts wears throughout the movie. According to the company, Julia has also personally been a long time fan of Me&Ro, a line renowned for its stackable rings, hammered bangles, personal amulets, and hoops of all sizes.

In the Eat Pray Love screen still here, Julia Roberts is wearing Me&Ro Gold Cloud Hoops earrings. These 10K gold medium hoop earrings are engraved with a cloud motif, which is meant to symbolize "the celestial realm where the union of compassion and wisdom brings forth the ultimate realization of one's true nature." They are available at the Me&Ro online store for $735.

If the gold Eat Pray Love earrings aren't your thing, check out these other Me&Ro earrings and bracelets worn by Julia Roberts in Eat Pray Love:

Me&Ro Sterling Silver Engraved Hoops - $160.
Me&Ro Sterling Silver Double Hammered Disc Drop Earrings - $120.
Me&Ro Sterling Silver Flattened Bangles (set of 7) - $805.
Me&Ro Men's Sterling Silver Courage Bead Bracelet on Red Cord (worn by James Franco) - $95.

Gap Suede wedge booties
Gap Suede Wedge Booties

$79.50
Available at: gap.com

The utilitarian / military / I've-been-roaming-around-in-the-desert look is one of the biggest trends for fall. The must-have items, at least so far, appear to be a military-inspired jacket in shades of olive or sand and a pair of rugged wedge booties. Thanks to their popularity, both of these items can be found in a wide range of prices and an even wider range of qualities. This new find from Gap manages to deliver this look in a reasonable quality at a rock bottom price, making it easy to embrace the trend on the cheap.

The Gap Suede Wedge Bootie is available in Khaki (shown) and Flint Gray 100% suede, with a 3" covered suede wedge heel. The metal eyes and thick laces give this boot that rugged quality that is so appealing for fall, while the colors are spot-on with the military-inspired color palette. The clincher is that these trendy genuine suede boots are only $79.50-- an outstanding price for the quality and overall fashion appeal.

Under $100: B. Makowsky Eden Pump

B. Makowsky - Eden (Brown Multi) - Footwear
B. Makowsky Eden Pump

$83.00 (was $113-- save 21%!)
Available at: zappos.com

Looking for a fabulous shoe quick fix for under $100? Check out this super cute new find...

Every woman needs a vaguely retro looking pump to round out her shoe wardrobe and satisfy her sartorial needs on those days when she's feeling a little Mad Men inspired. This B. Makowsky Eden Pump fits the bill perfectly.

The Eden Pump features a two-toned leather upper with tipped leather detail and a demure, slightly architectural heel. This shoe actually comes in four colors, including a black-on-black version. I had a bit of a hard time choosing which version to picture because both the Brown Multi pictured here and the Gray Multi, which is white with tipped gray accents, are super adorable. But, the brown won out because the beige-y base color really fuels the retro look for me. Be sure to click through and check out the Gray Multi, though. All four colors are on sale for under $100.

Pre-Fall: Opening Ceremony Shawl Collar Camel Coat

Wednesday, August 04, 2010 • Permalink •

Opening Ceremony Shawl Collar Coat
Opening Ceremony Shawl Collar Coat

$847.00
Available at: saks.com

By all indications, the camel coat will be the number one must-have for the fall season. I love those rare moments where the must-have items is actually a classic, rather than a flash in the pan fashion moment. The camel coat has been around, in one incarnation or another, for decades and this fall's camel coats are definitely going to add a new, chic chapter to the camel coat story.

Pictures of this fall's camel coats to come are slowly filtering into magazine editorials and pre-order sections of high-end stores. The choices are going to be amazing, but I'm already crushing on this find from the Saks Fifth Avenue First Looks section, where saks is previewing (and selling) some key pieces from the fall lines.

The Opening Ceremony Shawl Collar Coat is a fresh, modern take on the camel coat that will be perfect for those of use who live in more moderate climates. The military-inspired pockets and elbow-length sleeves make this version of the camel coat super relevant for this fall's ladylike and utilitarian trends... all in the same piece of clothing. Depending on what you paired it with, this coat could easily vibe either feminine or rugged, which is super versatile. Plus, since it retains that classic camel coat feel, it will be a closet favorite for many seasons to come.

Fashion Cents: What to Wear When You Tee Off

Wednesday, August 04, 2010 • Permalink •

--By Kimberly Turner

Okay, not actually when you tee off, more like when you are watching the pros tee off. Golf invitationals can be lots of fun but make sure you wear the right thing so you don't get tee'd off. here are my 3 tips to keep you above par:
1. Do wear comfortable shoes. You are going to walk a LOT and 4-inch heels on the golf course don't make sense.

2. Do try cotton polo shirts -- cool and stylish yet light and comfy. There is a reason Ralph Lauren Polo has been around for more than 40 years.

3. Don't wear skirts unless you have shorts under them. You will have to trudge up hills so cover your assets.
Now, watch the video to see my hole-in-one.

Chanel Paradoxal Nail Polish: Fall's It Shade

Tuesday, August 03, 2010 • Permalink •

Chanel Paradoxal Nail Polish
Chanel Paradoxal Nail Polish

$23.00
Available at: neimanmarcus.com

If nail polish trends are what you're after, there's really no need to look any further than the latest offerings from Chanel. For the past few years you could literally pick the next sell-out nail polish color by keeping an eye out for Chanel's newest shade.

For Spring / Summer 2010 it was all about the taupey-grey Chanel Particuliere, which, truthfully, I'm still loving. For fall 2010, the It color is Chanel Paradoxal Nail Polish.

Chanel Paradoxal Nail Polish is a deep greyish-purple with a subtle shimmer. Yes, I realize the official photo looks suspiciously bright and glimmery, but Paradoxal is more dusky and grey-tinged when on the nails. I think it's a perfect natural transition from the Spring's Particuliere. Chanel Paradoxal Nail Polish is currently in stock at Neiman Marcus, but I suspect this shade will sell out quickly and start popping up on eBay at three times the price. I'd snap it up now and stash it away for fall.

Stiletto Jungle Hits Estée Lauder's America's Night to Repair Event

Tuesday, August 03, 2010 • Permalink •

Last Thursday I had the chance to hang out at the Estée Lauder America's Night to Repair event at Macy's Union Square in San Francisco. As you may have saw in my previous post, America's Night to Repair is a fabulous Estée Lauder event that took place at counters nationwide. At the event, customers could receive free samples of Estée Lauder's best-selling Advanced Night Repair serum or new Advanced Night Repair eye, as well as enjoy Estée Lauder Signature Services. I visited the San Francisco event with Natalie of Coquette and Beth of Beauty Junkie in SF.

Estee Lauder Event - Macy's Union Square
Estee Lauder America's Night to Repair
Macy's Union Square - San Francisco

Leading up to the event I'd been using the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair eye, which I previously reviewed. At the event, my makeup artist, Cilma, used the original Advanced Night Repair on my skin. The immediate effect of the serum totally blew me away. So many skincare products caution that you'll have to wait weeks to see any results at all, but Advanced Night Repair had an immediate effect on my skin. The lightweight serum settled into my skin right away, plumping and smoothing my skin. It was crazy! I'm so excited to use the 10-day sample I picked up at the event to see what it can do over time.

After prepping my skin with the Advanced Night Repair and moisturizer, Cilma proceeded to give me a full Estée Lauder makeover. I got to experience many of the counter's Signature Services, which are available free of charge to anyone who stops by the Estée Lauder counter. My absolute favorite part was when Cilma showed me how to cover my obnoxious, hereditary dark under-eye circles. She mixed a bit of Advanced Night Repair eye with concealer and then dabbed the mixture on with a makeup brush. The results were amazing! I've tried just about everything to combat my dark circles, but this is the first makeup fix that really did look like it erased my circles. You can get a demo by stopping by your Estée Lauder counter for their "Fatigue Fighter" Two-Minute Touch-Ups service.

Overall, I had a fabulous experience at the Macy's Union Square counter. All of the people who work at the counter are super friendly, helpful and full of positive energy. If you are in the San Francisco area, I highly recommend stopping by to check out Estée Lauder Signature Services-- ask for Cilma and tell her I sent you! Or, check out the services at your local Estée Lauder counter. Want to see more pictures from the San Francisco event, including more makeover pictures of me, Natalie and Beth? I've uploaded a bunch to the Stiletto Jungle Facebook page.
