Fashion Cents: 3 Guidelines for Wearing Socks with Shoes

Wednesday, September 29, 2010 • Permalink •

--By Kimberly Turner

Now I know all of you stylish Stiletto Jungle viewers know the rules and I am sure you are quite savvy that you can stylishly break them too. But we all know a person or two (that includes men) who just don't get it and in their unfashionable way they just look WRONG. So together we can help unwrong (like Boost Mobile) some unfashionable folks. Just pass on the rules. But hey, if you are a little curious if you are doing it right, feel free to watch the video too. What you will learn:

  1. If your toe and heel are out, you shouldn't have on socks. But of course, with the right outfit, textured hoes can make become an exception.

  2. If you can see your ankles, you shouldn't see your socks.

  3. Black Shoes + White Socks = Fashion Mistake

Now see for yourself.

Fall Fashion: The Hobo Bag

Tuesday, September 28, 2010 • Permalink •

Tory Burch Steffi Hobo
Tory Burch Steffi Hobo

$435.00
Available at: shopbop.com

As we gear towards a different season, different styles become more appealing and, as the weather becomes cooler, the hobo bag becomes even more irresistible. The crescent shaped bag is a great spacious way to add style and convenience to your life. This slouchy bag makes it easy to go from the office to the gym, or from a stroll in the park with the kids to late lunch with girlfriends. Although it is a roomy bag, the hobo doesn’t look like a grocery bag because of a flattering shape that gives it its charm. Many celebrities such as the Olsen twins and Kate Moss have paid their respects to the bohemian style bag. With all kinds of creative style twists, the hobo bag has come a long way and has become a fashion must.

My first showcase item is designed by style icon Tory Burch. The Tory Burch Steffi hobo is a pebbled leather handbag that comes in black and a cranberry color. The handbag features zip pockets in front, with bias seams and pleats are at front and back. This hobo comes with a single handle along with a detachable adjustable shoulder strap. Carry it as a clutch or on your shoulder, depending on how many things you like to place in your bag.

Isabella Fiore Divan Liz Leather Hobo
Isabella Fiore Divan Liz Hobo

$495.00
Available at: bloomingdales.com

This next hobo bag definitely represents fall and winter. The deep red color and the tassels set the mood for the upcoming months. The Michael Michael Kors Braided Grommet Shoulder Bag is 43% off! On special for $199.99 -- how could you beat that? I love the thick twisted braid that goes through the circular gold keyholes to give it a bold, bright look! Sassy and fun loving, this bag will get you through the holidays.

Lastly, a designer I truly admire for her intricate designs is Isabella Fiore. The Divan Liz Leather Hobo is a stunner bag. The detail-oriented bag is embroidered with silver flower patterns and studs around the top part of the bag. There are two front pockets for easy access items like a cell phone and keys, and the rest can go in the bag with an easy to open, but a secure magnetic closure. This bag is to die for and will give your outfit an extra creativity boost.

Keep a hobo bag close by just in case you want to be able to diversify your look, but keep the same bag morning, day and night!

Under $100: Calvin Klein Karsyn Python-Embossed Pump

Monday, September 27, 2010 • Permalink •

Calvin Klein - Karsyn (Chino) - Footwear
Calvin Klein Karsyn Pumps

$59.50 (was $119-- save 50%!)
Available at: 6pm.com

Looking for a fabulous shoe quick fix for under $100? Check out this super cute new find...

These Calvin Klein Karsyn Pumps are sophisticated, stylish... and less than $60. The Karsyn pump features python-embossed leather upper with a non-slip sole and padded footbed. The 4.5" heel with 3/4" platform adds height while maintaining walkability. This ivory color, which they've named "Chino," would look chic peeking out from under camel wide-leg trousers, but would take on a funky style paired with skinny jeans. Amazingly, the Karsyn pumps are still available in most whole and half sizes from 5 1/2 to 10.

New & Hot: Isabel Marant Gipsy Wool-Blend Coat

Monday, September 27, 2010 • Permalink •

Isabel Marant Gipsy wool-blend coat
Isabel Marant Gipsy Coat

$860.00
Available at: net-a-porter.com

Fall's pared-down, laid-back chic is everywhere, but few coats are doing this fall-perfect look as well as this Isabel Marant find. In the context of the Isabel Marant Fall 2010 line, this coat played a supporting role in a '50s inspired story line. But, taken out of the context of the show, this jacket's clean lines and sophisticated fit works well with Fall's minimalist trend and has an overall classic look that will be useful for seasons to come.

The Isabel Marant Gipsy Wool-Blend Coat is crafted from a wool / cotton / polyamide blend with a black leather d-ring closure at the collar. Concealed buttons and welt pockets complete the clean look. It's a little on the pricey side, but, truthfully, not nearly as expensive as I would have guessed for a wool-blend coat from Isabel Marant. When you figure that a decent coat from a mall store like Club Monaco will set you back $300 - $400, paying double for a high-quality Isabel Marant creation sounds pretty reasonable. I'm sold.

Halloween Costume Couture by Simon Doonan at Target

Monday, September 27, 2010 • Permalink •

Barney's creative director Simon Doonan is known for his creative, eccentric, playful take on fashion and beauty. What better place to showcase Simon's truly unique way of looking at dressing than on the day set aside for "dressing up" -- Halloween!

Simon Doonan has partnered with Target for a line of witty, fashion-inspired, quirky Halloween costumes for women, men, kids and even canines. The Simon Doonan for Target Halloween Costume Couture line is fun the way Halloween is meant to be. There are no lingerie-masquerading-as-costume looks, and no too-serious costumes that look like they were stolen from a high-end stage production. Nope, these costumes are old school cheapie Halloween fun with a Simon Doonan twist.

Simon Doonan Halloween Costume CoutureCostume Couture by Simon Doonan - A-List Celebrity Costume Couture by Simon Doonan - Candace CornCostume Couture by Simon Doonan - Glamour GhostCostume Couture by Simon Doonan - Spaghetti

These Simon Doonan Costume Couture kits feature multi-piece Halloween costumes that are crafted from primarily polyester-- just like the old school costumes you relied on in grade school. But, the looks are 100% Simon Doonan thanks to tongue-in-cheek references to the worlds of fashion and celebrity and eccentric plays on color and proportion. I love how fun and kitschy these Simon Doonan Halloween costumes are. I think I might snag the kids' Candace Corn costume for myself. It's so quirky and light hearted-- everything Halloween should be.

Under $100: UGG Lo Pro Drawstring Boots

UGG Lo Pro Drawstring Boot

$91.13 (was $140-- save 35%!)
Available at: zappos.com

Looking for a fabulous shoe quick fix for under $100? Check out this super cute new find...

Although September is the warm season here in the San Francisco area, I know the rest of the country isn't so lucky. I was talking with some colleagues in the Minneapolis area this week and the rainy weather references were hard to miss. It got me thinking about the impending fall weather and preparing for the rain. I don't know about you, but when the rain starts all I want to do is curl up in layers of cashmere and cozy clothes and stay inside.

When it comes to snuggly shoes for a day of watching the rain fall down, UGG boots are about as cozy as they come. This sale find pair of UGG Lo Pro Drawstring Boots features a cotton upper with UGG's traditional sheepskin insole. The price, however, is far from traditional UGG: they're on sale for under $100.

Looking for a fabulous shoe quick fix for under $100? Check out this super cute new find...

Fall has many great looks to choose from, but one of the most attractive and wearable trends is the ladylike look. This affordable shoe find complements the ladylike trend with its rich Taupe color and delicate pleated heel detail. The Aldo Botkins Pump features a suede upper with man-made lining and sole. If Taupe isn't for you, this pump also comes in Black and Bordo (a deep red) suede. But, this Taupe shade strikes me as being particularly fitting for fall.

New & Hot: Rag & Bone/JEAN The Sweater

Thursday, September 23, 2010 • Permalink •

Rag & Bone/JEAN The Sweater
Rag & Bone/JEAN The Sweater

$185.00
Available at: shopbop.com

Companion line Rag & Bone/JEAN, designed by Rag & Bone duo Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, hit the fashion scene in Spring 2010. The line features denim, knits and shirts that stay true to the Rag & Bone look, but in a more relaxed (and slightly more affordable) way. Just check out this knit from the Fall line.

Rag & Bone/JEAN The Sweater is crafted from 100% cotton with raised raglan seams and ribbed edges. The silhouette is classic, while the marled cotton construction adds a little modernity. It's very Rag & Bone, just more affordable. I'd pair this simple sweater with slouchy jeans for the weekend, or even try it as a counterpoint to chocolate brown wide-leg trousers for an office-appropriate look.

Steal: Marc by Marc Jacobs Reversible Jacket

MARC BY MARC JACOBS Two Tone Reversible Jacket
Marc by Marc Jacobs Reversible Jacket

$458.00
Available at: nordstrom.com

Ok, before you get all bent out of shape because I just called a $458 jacket a steal, hear me out.

This new Marc by Marc Jacobs Reversible Jacket really is a steal. Think of it this way: you're getting two totally different Marc by Marc Jacobs jackets for the price of one. The first, pictured here, is a classic charcoal double-breasted jacket with chic goldtone buttons and functional flap pockets. The second jacket is a funky, tweedy gray jacket with black velvet trim -- click through to see the picture.

Unlike many reversible fashions, these two jacket looks really are different enough from one another that they will double your jacket options in one hit. Perfect. And definitely a steal.

New & Hot: AllSaints Bura Deconstructed Oxford Shoe

Wednesday, September 22, 2010 • Permalink •

AllSaints Bura Shoe
AllSaints Bura Shoe

$280.00
Available at: us.allsaints.com

These new AllSaints Bura Shoes are kind of like a Picasso painting in shoe form.

The deconstructed oxford-style shoe has the appearance of being pulled together from bits and pieces of three different shoes, all taken from different angles. The gray leather and hidden wedge look are both big trends for Fall 2010, but these common trends take on a new life as part of this one of a kind shoe. The best part is the price. Yes, $280 is hardly small change. But, these shoes have a straight-off-the-runway look that you'd expect to cost closer to the $1000 mark. For this much style, and a quality leather and wood construction, the price is a real steal.

Wildfox Love Potion No 9 Sweater

$178.00
Available at: blacklabelboutique.com

Wildfox Couture is known for their witty, whimsical tees... and for their celebrity following. One of the latest celebrity Wildfox Couture sightings is this picture of Taylor Swift sporting the new, adorable Wildfox Couture White Label Love Potion No. 9 Sweater in Cream.

This sweater is crafted from a viscose / nylon / angora blend with metallic Love Potion No. 9 emblem. It has a slouchy fit that is ideal for a weekend pairing with skinny jeans or leggings. It's definitely cute, but not so cutesy that it would look silly on a woman over the age of 17. You could easily toughen up this sweater with punky accessories and rugged jeans or military-inspired pants.

Jessica Simpson Dany Platform

$98.95
Available at: zappos.com

Looking for a fabulous shoe quick fix for under $100? Check out this super cute new find...

I'm a firm believer that you can never be too tall. I know some (well, ok, many) will disagree with me, but I've never met a 5" heel I didn't love. This new Jessica Simpson Dany Platform has tons of height-- 5.5" to be exact-- plus a fun vintage look, and a 2" platform that adds both style and wearability.

The shoe was featured in the September 2010 issue of Lucky magazine in their feature on Jessica Simpson -- it was one of Jessica Simpson's style picks. She had this to say about the Dany Platform: "These are my favorite shoes. They are vintage-looking and chic -- and make you about six inches taller."

Tucker for Target: 5 Must-Buy Pieces

Monday, September 20, 2010 • Permalink •

I'm not exaggerating in the least when I say that the new Tucker for Target line is the best Target Go International designer collaboration yet.

I've happily purchased items from most of the Go International lines, but I've always felt as though the designers were holding back. Like they were purposefully altering their design aesthetic enough that owners of the "real thing" would never feel as though the "for Target" version was a cheaply made replica of their pricey originals. It makes sense -- don't want to dilute the value the label and all. But this couldn't be further from the truth with Tucker for Target. Evidently Tucker designer Gabby Basora didn't get the memo on the designer Go International M.O.

I own a couple of the "real thing" Tucker signature blouses, which are crafted from 100% silk and cost $276 each. I can safely say that the Tucker for Target 100% poly versions are spot on replicas of the Tucker signature blouse... at $29.99. No joke. It's the exact same design and exact same fit, just a different fabric. And, fabric feel aside, polyester does an amazing job of mimicking the look and drape of silk. I was blown away. I ended up buying 4 Tucker for Target Signature Blouses (plus one more fabulous find):

Tucket for Target
Tucker for Target Signature Blouse in Floral PrintTucker for Target Signature Blouse in CreamTucker for Target Fleece Top in GrayTucker for Target Signature Blouse in NavyTucker for Target Signature Blouse in Painted-Flowers Print

If you haven't snagged a Tucker for Target blouse yet, I'd jump on it quick. The word is out about this amazing line and the Tucker for Target Signature Blouses in particular are selling like hotcakes -- many color and patterns are already sold out. Plus, the Fleece Top in Gray is completely fabulous. It feels like a sweatshirt, looks like tweed, and fits like a dream. I highly recommend it.

To check out my picks for the 5 must-buy Tucker for Target items, click on the individual photos above, or click below:

  1. Signature Blouse in Floral Print - $29.99

  2. Signature Blouse in Cream - $29.99

  3. Fleece Top in Gray - $24.99

  4. Signature Blouse in Navy - $29.99

  5. Signature Blouse in Painted-Flowers Print - $29.99

You can view the entire Tucker for Target line at Target.com.

New & Hot: Rachel Rachel Roy Faux Curly Lamb Jacket

Rachel Rachel Roy Faux Curly Lamb Swing Jacket
Rachel Rachel Roy Faux Curly Lamb Jacket

$179.00
Available at: rachelroy.com

I want to curl up and take a nap with this new Rachel Rachel Roy Faux Curly Lamb Jacket. Would that be wrong?

Faux furs of all kinds are super hot for Fall 2010, so why not snag a faux fur that is both super snuggly and fashionable? This new jacket covers both bases... oh, and did I mention that it's crazy affordable? Plus, through 9/20/10, you can score an extra 30% off during the Rachel Roy Friends and Family Event.

The Rachel Rachel Roy Faux Curly Lamb Jacket is crafted from a modacrylic / poly blend and is lined. It has a double-breasted fit that is actually very modern looking -- you can click through to see pics of it buttoned up -- thanks to a design that creates a funnel neck look when fully buttoned. It looks great with a dressier ensemble, as pictured here, but would work equally well with a pair of distressed jeans and chunky boots.

Preorder: Vince Checkerboard Cashmere Sweater

Thursday, September 16, 2010 • Permalink •

Vince Checkerboard Cashmere Sweater
Vince Checkerboard Cashmere Sweater

$235.00
Available at: nordstrom.com

What's fall without layers of cashmere? And, when it comes to cashmere with a modern twist, it's hard to beat Vince. Sure, Loro Piana may be more luxurious, and J.Crew more classic (and apt to go on sale), but Vince makes cashmere relevant and fresh season after season. I can't resist.

This new Vince Checkerboard Cashmere Sweater is clearly one of the standouts from the Holiday 2010 Vince line. This heather gray sweater features a combination of textures and style elements that could have gone horribly wrong: a bateau neck and dolman sleeves, plus patches of cross-directional ribbing and an side-split hem. But, the final result is perfectly slouchy, but still body-conscious and interesting. There's no way anyone would compare the Vince slouchy silhouette to a garbage sack, as is often the case when designers try to go slouchy. Bottom line: the look is modern, the cashmere is super soft, and the price is right.

Fashion Cents: 5 Must Have Fall Basics

Wednesday, September 15, 2010 • Permalink •

--By Kimberly Turner

It is that time of the year...the leaves are turning from green to orange to brown and so are the clothes in your closet. You are either starting to change over your closet to your fall wardrobe filled with rich, warm hues or you are pulling those fall items to the front of your already overstuffed closet. But either way, you are on the hunt for your fall pieces. So as you go through your fall pieces and consider how to add in splashes of the season's hottest trends -- military, floral, red, etc. -- make sure you have secured the basics because you can combine any of the trends with these 5 must have fall pieces:
  1. Classic Blazer/Cardigan

  2. Classic Pants/Skirt

  3. White Button Down Shirt

  4. Black Pumps

  5. LBD (little black dress, of course)
Once you have these five pieces, you are ready to layer on the trends. Plus, remember that these staples should last you several seasons unless you skimp on quality and/or proper care. So be choosy about what you buy and take good care of them with every wear. These are pieces your closet shouldn't be without every fall season. Make sense?

New & Hot: French Connection Midnight Stalks Top

French Connection Midnight Stalks Top
French Connection Midnight Stalks Top

$88.00
Available at: frenchconnection.com

Fall's ladylike trend opens up all sorts of options for combining proper blouses with skirts and trousers. It's such a fun way of dressing and a welcome change from seasons of much less tailored clothing options. This new top from French Connection is one of those blouses that you'll want to wear all the time, all fall, because it's so unique.

The French Connection Midnight Stalks Top features a flying bird and fern print in your choice of three different colors -- Black, Wilderbeast and Burgh Blue. Yes, even the colors have cool names. This shirt reminds me of those dark, melodramatic prints you find in the domestic arts section of museums. It's kind of goth-y and yet completely beautiful at the same time. Loves it.

UGG & Jimmy Choo Siohban Boot
UGG & Jimmy Choo Siohban

$495.00
Available at: uggaustralia.com

The latest high-low collaboration has landed and, truthfully, it's kind of strange... it's super casual shoe line UGG and stiletto-maker to the stars Jimmy Choo. The line has been super creatively named "UGG & Jimmy Choo". I know, I know. I was confused too. But, at least according to Jimmy Choo founder Tamara Mellon, it's a match made in heaven:
"Other than Jimmy Choo, UGG Australia is the only other footwear I have in my wardrobe. I wear it at home in New York, on holiday in Malibu and as an essential travel accessory for my plane wardrobe. We are delighted to have created a special capsule that captures the best of both brands - the legendary comfort of UGG with the spirit of Jimmy Choo."
The collection features the well-known UGG shape covered in varying degrees of studs, with the occasional animal print or fringe thrown in the mix. My favorite is the Siohban, which is a donegal cable knit cashmere blend with lamb suede fringe and stud details. Yes, it sounds a little busy, but the look is kind of Malibu hippie-chic, and snuggly. All six styles are currently available for preorder on both the UGG and Jimmy Choo websites.

I've got a happy Monday fashion riddle for all of you. What's crazy chic, vaguely Rykiel and will set you back a mere $20? It's the brand new Old Navy Intarsia Sweaters, and they are already the front runner for fashion steal of the week.

While intarsia (i.e., knitting with blocks of color to create a design) sweaters pop up all over the place, French designer Sonia Rykiel really put intarsia knits on the map with her use of the technique to add fun sayings and pop art touches to solid color sweaters. These new Intarsia Sweaters from Old Navy follow the same pattern.

These new Old Navy Intarsia Sweaters come in 5 colors of 100% cotton knit, each with a different word or colorful icon knitted into the front. It's a bit of a toss up, by I think I've settled on the Love knit pictured here as my favorite. But, the grey striped Peace Signs and oatmeal heather Butterfly are also pretty fabulous. At only $20 per sweater, it's worth snagging a couple just for fun.

New Skincare Discoveries, From Cleansing to Perfecting

Obagi CLENZIderm MD Daily Care Foaming Cleanser
Obagi CLENZIderm MD Cleanser

$18.00
Available at: skinmedix.com

Although hesitant as usual, I finally got the guts to try some new skincare products and boy did I fall head over heels. Not only is my skin thanking me for it, but my friends are too.

Working so much and wearing make-up on my face all day makes my skin go haywire, so in order to control that I was looking for a new daily foaming cleanser. The search ended when I discovered Obagi CLENZIderm MD Daily Care Foaming Cleanser. This cleanser works wonderfully, removing all the dirt that our skin accumulates throughout the day, debris, make-up and excess oil. The 2% Salicylic acid helps prevent clogged pores and leaves skin refreshed and clean. It eliminates dead skin cells by washing them away which promotes new healthier skin cells to surface. The good news with this Obagi wash is that you don’t have to worry about turning into a dried up beet because the menthol ingredient will soothe the skin, preventing redness and irritation. If you do get a little dry from this product try skipping a day. There is no better feeling than being committed to a daily cleanser-- who said I was non-committal?

Neocutis Journee Bio Restorative Day Cream with PSP 30 ml
Neocutis Journee Bio Restorative Day Cream

$88.00
Available at: skinmedix.com

Let me just say, I was in the dark when it came to eye creams for a long time. But, now that there are dark circles under my eyes, I get the picture. I never understood it until the shadow spoke back to me when I looked in the mirror. I had always heard wonderful things from my co-workers about Neocutis Lumiere Bio Restorative Eye Cream. But, it wasn’t approved by me until I actually saw a huge result in my under eye area. This stuff is miraculous and I highly recommend it. The only thing is try not to forget this daily ritual and make it part of your routine. I saw results after 6 weeks of nightly application, but for maximum results apply twice a day on clean skin.

Gearing towards another Neucutis product that has gained a lot of popularity for an obvious reason, I tried the Journee Bio Restorative Day Cream. This cream is remarkable and kills two birds with one stone. I use it as a morning moisturizer, tint and sunscreen. It’s a complete anti-aging day cream with PSP, anti oxidants, hyaluronic acid and UVA/UVB protection SPF 30+ to rejuvenate, protect and hydrate skin. This miracle potion smoothes fine lines and wrinkles by keeping skin hydrated and radiant. This cream goes a long way all you need is a pump or two and you’ve got yourself a luminous, protected face.

New & Hot: Covet Top With Snood

Covet Top With Snood
Covet Top With Snood

$85.00
Available at: djpremium.com

It never fails, as soon as September rolls around all I want to do is start layering clothing. Unfortunately, the weather is not cooperating. More than a tee and cardigan and I'll be cranking down the air conditioning to eco-unfriendly levels. But, that doesn't stop me from day dreaming about fall dressing.

I ran across this Covet Top With Snood (their crazy, not quite accurate name, not mine) and instantly wanted to layer it a billion different ways. Under a jacket, over a thermal tee with a faux fur vest on top, paired with a chunky cardigan... the possibilities are endless. The bamboo construction is sure to be super soft and cozy, and the color is a perfect neutral. Altogether, a great fall find.

Splurge: Maison Martin Margiela Hi-Rise Coat

Maison Martin Margiela Double Breasted Hi_rise Coat
Maison Martin Margiela Hi-Rise Coat

$1,475.00
Available at: ssense.com

Maison Martin Margiela is one of the few lines that I could live in. Seriously, I've never seen an item from the label -- from jackets, to pants, to shoes -- that I wouldn't gladly invite into my closet. But, this recent find rises to the top as a truly stand-out piece from the label. Definitely splurge-worthy.

The brand new Maison Martin Margiela Hi-Rise Coat is chic, modern minimalism at it's best. The textured black wool jacket features a double-breasted construction with an amazing, architectural wide stand-up funnel neck collar. The wool and elastic belt creates nice definition, but doesn't take away from the clean lines of the coat. Fully buttoned up, as seen here, this coat is sleek. But, when it's left unbuttoned it takes on a rakish quality that would look amazing with skinny jeans. Click through to see a picture -- just unbuttoning totally transforms the coat. That chameleon-like quality makes this fall find totally worth the money.

With Labor Day behind us, and Fashion Week just around the corner, it's time to concentrate on fall and winter fashions. Review: CoverGirl Line Exact Liquid Eyeliner

Friday, September 03, 2010 • Permalink •

This is part 3 in a 3 part series reviewing the new CoverGirl Smoky Eye Look trio of products.

CoverGirl Line Exact Liquid Liner Pen, Black Brown
CoverGirl Line Exact Liquid Liner

$6.79
Available at: drugstore.com

For part 3 of my review of the CoverGirl Smoky Eye Look trio of products I tried out CoverGirl Line Exact Liquid Eyeliner pen. I'd need to caveat this review with the fact that I do not like the look of liquid liner on me. I typically use a cake eyeliner, and may use a pencil eyeliner in a pinch, but liquid eyeliner has never been my cup of tea. I pushed aside my prejudices to give CoverGirl Line Exact a try. Keeping with my attempt to do a scientific evaluation of these products, I switched out my normal eyeliner product with CoverGirl Line Exact, keeping the remainder of my eye makeup just like my normal routine. This is my review:

Packaging and Instructions

CoverGirl Line Exact comes in a pen format that reminds me a lot of a felt tip marker. I have to say, the instructions are woefully incomplete. The outer packaging does not contain even a hint of instruction -- I big negative for this liquid liner novice. The actual product packaging was also devoid of instructions, save for a very small admonition to "shake well" -- which I didn't see until after I attempted to use the product without shaking and got a kind of separated mess of product. I learned the hard way that shaking is very important to getting a well-mixed liner product. While the felt tip pen approach did seem user friendly, the lack of instructions was a big turn off.

Texture and Feel

Once I figured out that shaking the pen was a big, important step, I was able to properly test the CoverGirl Line Exact Liquid Eyeliner. The product did glide on very well, without skipping or tugging. Consequently, I was able to product a clean line without much effort. The color I tried -- Black Brown -- was true to what I was expecting, and dried quickly without affecting the depth of the color. Once on and dried, the Line Exact was comfortable.

Results

Overall, I felt that the CoverGirl Line Exact Liquid Eyeliner produced a clean, precise line fairly easily. I was dismayed with the lack of clear instruction, but I feel I was able to overcome this set back with a little extra practice. I'm still not sold on liquid eyeliner as a look for me, but I think the CoverGirl liquid liner was much easier to use than I was expecting and would likely make a good, affordable option for fans of the liquid liner look.

Review: CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast Eyeshadow

Wednesday, September 01, 2010 • Permalink •

This is part 2 in a 3 part series reviewing the new CoverGirl Smoky Eye Look trio of products.

CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast Shadow Stick, Bronze Fire
CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast

$8.49
Available at: drugstore.com

As I mentioned in Part 1 of this review series, I'm a bit of an eye makeup snob. But, when CoverGirl came knocking with a chance to try out their entire Smoky Eye Look trio of products, I couldn't resist the chance. In an effort to be super scientific and unbiased, I systematically traded out one product in my normal eye makeup routine with a CoverGirl product each day. For my second review, I traded out my normal eyeshadow for CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast. This is my review:

Packaging and Instructions

Unless you've been living in a style-free hole in the ground, you've likely seen the CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast commercials or print advertisements. The selling point is clear: one product, two easy steps, perfectly smoky eyes. It's hard to resist that kind of sell. The Smoky Shadow Blast is packaged in a compact double ended stick, with the step 1 side and step 2 side clearly labeled. The outer packaging has clear, yet succinct, directions on how to apply the two colors to achieve a smoky eye look. It's kind of like paint by numbers.

Texture and Feel

CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast is a cream eyeshadow in stick form. While you do apply the shadow with the stick, it must be blended with your finger, just like any other cream shadow. I personally like cream shadows because of the ease of blending and the way you can build color, but some women are uncertain when it come to using cream shadows. If that sounds like you, you'll probably want to experiment with CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast when you aren't going anywhere so that you can get the look down without any time constraints. Cream shadow can be tricky and it's easy to accidentally rub it off while you are trying to blend.

Results

Overall, I enjoyed using the Smoky Shadow Blast. I don't feel that the two step application process is nearly as easy as it is billed to be, but the pre-matched colors and compact wand packaging are definite strong points. Also, the color I tried -- Bronze Fire -- was very shimmery. Almost too shimmery for daytime, despite the fact that this color combo was presented to me as the "natural" option. Finally, I've read some reviews that complain that CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast creases and wears off. As part of my super-scientific approach to this review, I wore Smoky Shadow Blast with my normal eyeshadow primer and I did not have any issues with creasing or wearing off. In fact, my eyeshadow was completely intact at the end of a 10-hour day at the office. Bottom line, if you can handle the shimmer and the cream consistency, the pre-matched colors and compact wand make CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast an easy option for creating a dynamic eye look and it is particularly well suited to travel.

Fashion Cents: How To Alter Clothing

Wednesday, September 01, 2010 • Permalink •

--By Kimberly Turner

Recently I did a closet analysis (a.k.a. closet clean out) for a new client. I was amazed at how many pieces in her wardrobe did not fit her well despite how much she spent on her clothing. I had to teach her that just because items on the rack are described as "ready to wear" they are not always ready to wear. So here are 5 common ready to wear assumptions that can be easily altered:

  1. Pants are meant to be that long.

  2. Pants are meant to be that short.

  3. Shoulders on a jacket should hang off of your natural shoulders.

  4. A huge gap in the back is natural.

  5. Buttons are supposed to pull across the breast.

Now watch the video to learn your options for fixing these issues and the possible costs. I promise you, it makes fashion cents.
