Fashion Cents: 5 Tips for Successful Consignment Shopping

Tuesday, May 31, 2011 • Permalink •

--By Kimberly Turner

Obviously you love designer pieces but you look for them at discounted prices. That's why you visit the Stiletto Jungle since they share the best deals on the web with you and you get to stay up-to-date on all of the online flash sales. Well, here's another way to get designer items without breaking your bank -- consignment shopping.

I can hear your objections already but "don't knock it if you haven't tried it!" If you shop the right consignment stores, you can get great merchandise in almost new condition (in some case it is still new) like mint condition Prada pumps for only $150 (example only, clearly prices vary). So how can you successfully shop consignment shops? Here are 5 tips:
  1. Pick the right consignment boutique (hint: the neighborhood matters);
  2. Shop in season, don't go looking for wool coats in the middle of summer;
  3. Take a list, otherwise you might end up buying things you don't need and that's a waste of money;
  4. Take your time, there is lots to go through; and
  5. Try EVERYTHING on, there are no refunds!

Now that you know how to shop consignment stores, here are a few places to check out:

Chicago — Elliott Consignment
Los Angeles — Decades Two.1
Philadelphia — Wilbur Vintage
Seattle — Le Frock

Review: Bite Beauty Lip Shine Gloss

Tuesday, May 31, 2011 • Permalink •

Bite Beauty Lip Shine Gloss
Lip products have been getting a bad rap lately for their not-so-healthy ingredients. Makes sense. After all, "wearing off" is just code for getting eaten in the lip product world. The fact that wearing lip cosmetics means that we're ingesting compounds that were never meant to be eaten is a little scary. It was inevitable that lines like Bite Beauty would start popping up.

Bite Beauty is a new line of lip products being sold at Sephora . Bite Beauty's defining feature is the addition of the antioxidant resveratrol, which is meant to be ingested via the normal "wearing off" process. In addition to featuring resveratrol, the Bite Beauty formula also includes organic shea butter, superfoods, and food-grade colors. In short, these lip products are actually made to be eaten.

When I spotted the Bite Beauty display at my local Sephora , and I stopped to read the literature, I knew I had to give it a try. I picked up a tube of Bite Beauty Lip Shine Gloss in Prosecco, a sheer nude color. This is my Bite Beauty review.

Packaging and Instructions

The Bite Beauty Lip Shine comes in a standard round tube with wand applicator. It's substantial, but not heavy, and has a chic matte smoke grey lid. The outer packaging is equally chic: simple matte textured dove grey cardboard with tomato red embossed writing. Truthfully, it was the striking outer packaging that initially drew me to the Bite Beauty display.

Texture and Feel

I found Bite Beauty's Lip Shine texture to be thick for a gloss, but not uncomfortably so. It went on smoothly, with even color application, and did not feel sticky. The overall texture was comfortable and moisturizing. I did find the taste/ smell to be a bit waxy. Given the gorgeous color, I was subconsciously expecting something kind of fruity or fresh. But, it makes sense that the actual taste was less appealing -- such is the way with products that refuse to use artificial fragrances. The waxy smell/ taste wasn't overpowering or unpleasant enough to keep me from using this product.

Results

Of course, I have no way of knowing whether the addition of antioxidants benefited me in any way. But, I like the thought of there being something actually good for me in my lip products. As for the more practical results you would look for in a gloss -- the color was rich, the formula moisturizing but not sticky, and the gloss lasted just as long, if not longer than, other brands.

Bottom line: the gloss works as well as, if not better than, any other glosses I've used. Plus, I feel a little healthier knowing that I'm only ingesting food-grade ingredients, and a little extra antioxidant power along with it. The smell/ taste isn't super pleasant, but not bad enough to keep me from using this product again. My overall grade: 4 out of 5 stars.

Top 5 Crop Jeans for Summer and How to Wear Them

Monday, May 30, 2011 • Permalink •

In case you are still wonder about what's the trendiest way to wear your denim this summer, I have your answer: the crop jean. The writing's on the wall... and all over the glossies... the crop jean is where it's at right now.

While the vast majority of trends aren't universally flattering, I'm particularly dubious of trends where it's as easy for the look to be totally wrong as it is for it to be right. The crop jean is the former. There are a lot of ways to wear cropped jeans wrong, and the result can be extremely unflattering. With this particular trend, you run the risk of looking short, wide and generally unfashionable. But, if worn correctly, cropped denim is more flattering than shorts and can vibe unfussy and super summery.

The keys to wearing crop denim right?
  1. Make sure the hem hits just below the widest part of your calf to avoid a "fattening" effect.
  2. Wear with high heel sandals, or, if you must go flat, with sandals that are ankle-strap free. An exposed top of foot will help lengthen the leg.
  3. Avoid flared crops -- they tend to look like bell-bottoms that were purchased entirely too short. Instead, go for straight leg or cropped skinnies.
Finally, a few of our favorite pair of crop jeans:

White jeans are practically a must-have for summer, and this cropped straight leg pair fits just right.

New & Hot: J Brand Pink Skinny Jeans

Thursday, May 26, 2011 • Permalink •

J Brand 11 inch Ankle Skinny Jeans
What: J Brand 11" Ankle Skinny Jeans in Pretty Pink

Why they're hot: Everything old is new again... especially when it comes to fashion. During my high school years, colored jeans were super popular. I specifically remember emerald green and deep blue pairs in my closet. And, for Summer 2011, colored jeans are big yet again. Although, thankfully, this time around a slim silhouette makes colored jeans fun and fresh rather than old and tired.

The hottest new colored jeans on the block? J Brand Pink Skinny Jeans in a slightly cropped cut, which have been popping up on starlets and fashionistas on both coasts. These new ankle-length jeans come in Pretty Pink -- the most popular color -- as well as Bright Blue, Bright Red, Bright Fuchsia and Bright Yellow.

What to wear them with: To let the color of the jeans take center stage, try pairing these pants in pink with a basic tee in dove grey and shoes in nude or natural tones. Feeling a little more adventurous in the fashion department? Try pairing in a contrasting color, like orange or mint, for Summer's hot color block effect. The key to pulling off color blocking? Make sure your contrasting colors are a similar color saturation -- so, pastels with pastels, brights with brights.

→ Buy J Brand Ankle Skinny Jeans in all 5 colors, $172.00, at shopbop.com; shipping and returns are free.

Sale: Current/ Elliott The Smart Trousers 30% Off

Thursday, May 26, 2011 • Permalink •

Current_elliott The Smart Trousers
I ran across these Current/ Elliott The Smart Trousers at the huge SSense Spring Sale and they instantly struck me as being a great deal. They're practical, yet trendy, and on sale. Really, a nice little combination of qualities.

Current/ Elliott's The Smart Trousers are slim fit cropped trousers with a slightly tapered fit. It's Spring and Summer's hot new silhouette for pants. Plus, it's a fit that's really made for showing off your fabulous shoes, which I love.

This particular pair comes in a very versatile Sand color, with moderate distressing and a black stitch detail at the waistband -- details that keep the look out of soccer mom territory. All you really need to add is a soft, slouchy tee and platform sandals for an outfit that is appropriately casual for the weekend, but still fun and stylish.

→ Buy the Current/ Elliott The Smart Trousers, $119.00 (was $170 -- save 30%!), at ssense.com.

FOUND: Kate Middleton's Nude Dress from her Obama Meeting

Tuesday, May 24, 2011 • Permalink •

Kate Middleton meeting Michelle Obama wearing nude dress
I'm so glad Kate Middleton is back from her honeymoon and on the official duty circuit. After the big post-wedding Kate "ballet flats at the grocery store" sighting, I was getting all into the Kate Middleton fashion stalking game. Then she left. But, the Duchess of Cambridge is back on the scene, and back in the chic-yet-affordable style game.

Duchess Kate was just spotted meeting that other big name in the "fashion for the people" game -- Michelle Obama -- for the first time. For this historic meeting at Buckingham Palace, Kate Middleton chose a stylish nude dress with subtle bandage styling. Much like Ms. Obama, Kate favors a nice mix of high end designers and affordable labels that can be purchased by us real world fashionistas. For this high profile photo op Kate didn't disappoint when it comes to delivering attainable fashion.

REISS Shola Camel Bandage Dress
Want to steal Kate Middleton's nude dress style for yourself? She's wearing the REISS Shola Camel Bandage Dress (shown right). This super affordable dress retails for a mere $340 -- insanely affordable by royalty standards. Beyond the low price, let me remind you that this is a dress that can be purchased straight from the online store right now. It's part of the regular REISS Autumn-Winter 2010 line, not some kind of special yet-to-be-released design.

Granted, the REISS site has already crashed once today and I'm sure this dress will quickly sell out (and just as quickly be re-issued), but as of this writing Kate's chic nude dress is still in stock and ready for purchase. As you may remember, Kate also wore REISS for her official engagement photo. So, if this nude dress is sold out, it's worth taking the time to check out the rest of the site... you never know which REISS dress Kate will be spotted wearing next!

→ Buy the REISS Shola Camel Bandage Dress, $340.00, at reissonline.com.

→ Buy the REISS Shola Camel Bandage Dress, $285.00 & up, at ebay.com.

Top 3 Denim Blazers for Spring

Tuesday, May 24, 2011 • Permalink •

The calendar may say that it's almost summer, but the weather is definitely telling another story. With cool mornings, unexpected rain clouds and generally unpredictable temperatures, a spring jacket is practically a necessity. The best bet for a stylish cover up that is functional and versatile? A smart denim blazer.

A denim blazer is right at home with a casual ensemble -- from jeans and a tee , to khaki shorts. But, the structure that comes with a blazer silhouette creates just enough oomph to fit in well with dressier outfits. Add your denim blazer over a floaty dress to anchor the look; pair it with a pencil skirt for a sharp look that can go to the office. Now, take a look at our three stand out picks for the top denim blazers of Spring 2011.

This dark wash AK Anne Klein Denim Blazer with white top stitching is polished, yet still really fun. Try pairing it with pale blue distressed boyfriend cut rolled jeans to balance out the formality of the clean lines.

AK Anne Klein Denim Blazer

→ Buy the AK Anne Klein Denim Blazer, $98.90 (was $149 -- save 33%!), at nordstrom.com.

The slouchy look of this Tencel blazer by Acne is fashion-forward, but sure to be ultra comfortable. It would look great with skinny jeans or slender tank dress.

Acne Blacksweet Tencel Blazer

→ Buy the Acne Blacksweet Tencel Blazer, $570.00, at saks.com.

Current/Elliot's Co-Ed Blazer features super worn-in stripes for a unique take on the denim blazer trend. It's sharp with white denim, as shown here, but would look equally cool with slouchy khaki trousers.

Best Seller: T by Alexander Wang Maxi Tank Dress

Monday, May 23, 2011 • Permalink •

T by Alexander Wang Maxi Tank Dress
Relaxed maxi-length dresses are super popular for Summer 2011, and tank style maxi dresses seem to be particularly well-loved. So, finding this T by Alexander Wang Maxi Tank Dress on the best seller list for the contemporary section at Saks Fifth Avenue's online store wasn't much of a surprise.

The T by Alexander Wang line is full of super soft fabrics and deliciously drapey silhouettes, and this new Maxi Tank Dress follows right in step with the rest of the line. The cut features wide straps with a scoop neck and single chest pocket. The rayon dress pulls on without closures for a super relaxed fit. It's available in the summer-perfect Hazelnut shade pictures here, as well as a wear-with-anything Black.

Pair this dress with your favorite pair of flip flops for a super casual look. Add this season's must-have platform wedge sandals for a slightly dressier vibe. Want to go high fashion for evening? Try layering with a motorcycle jacket or asymmetrical blazer and architectural pumps. The look would be ideal for a downtown gallery opening or fashion-forward gathering.

What to Wear to a Cocktail Party Summer 2011

Monday, May 23, 2011 • Permalink •

sponsored by:
Bacardi - Rediscover the Daiquiri - Logo

There's something about cocktail parties in summer that makes them just a little more magical than other times of year. There's less pressure to conform to old fashioned ideas about how to throw a proper cocktail party, and a little more emphasis on having fun and enjoying company. The setting switches from stuffy rooms to the great outdoors. Heavy handed drinks that require 20 minutes to prep switch to easy-going libations that leave more time for conversing (**see below for an easy summer drink idea). And cocktail dresses transform from constricting and predominantly black, to fun-loving and colorful.

With Memorial Day right around the corner, I'm sure you're anxious about your first big summer party. So, after a couple seasons of stepping out in shades of black every time the invite called for cocktail attire, what's a fashionista to wear to a cocktail party in summer 2011? This summer's all about three big trends: bright color blocks (seen at Jil Sander and Prada), jungle influences (seen at House of Holland and Alexander McQueen) and lace (seen at Chanel and Ralph Lauren).

Here's a look at what we suggest for arriving in style to your first summer cocktail party. And please remember a cute look is no excuse for overindulging. Remember to drink responsibly and designate a driver!

Bright color blocks is by far my favorite trend of the season, and vibrant pink and orange -- often appearing together -- are the standout colors. Pair a solid color dress in an exceptional shade with shoes and handbag in a contrasting color to snag the effect.

While the runways showed everything from feathers and raffia, to oversized animal prints as part of the jungle influence trend, a perfect real world take is a bright tribal print. This trend is ideal for a casual backyard party.

Voom Tribal Print Poncho Dresses

→ Buy the Voom Tribal Print Poncho Dress, $174.00, at edressme.com.

For a classic summer look gone modern, try a simple white sundress with lace details. Pair it with a pair of this season's stand-out wood heel sandals to do double duty with another big runway trend: '70s style.

Splurge: Calvin Klein Collection Savea B Dress

Thursday, May 19, 2011 • Permalink •

Calvin Klein Collection Savea B Dress
Isn't it kind of reassuring how the best fashions just keep reappearing. Just when you start to get all nostalgic about that amazing dress, or pair of trousers or blouse, a similar style will spring back into fashion and you get to relive the sartorial glory. These days, it's a subtly new take on the minimalist vibe of the '90s that has reappeared.

I spotted this Calvin Klein Collection Savea B Dress in the new arrivals section of online boutique shopbop.com. Instantly I felt a wave of nostalgia. This dress is classic, minimalist Calvin Klein. The length, the body-conscious fit, the drape -- it's so clearly inspired by Calvin Klein's '90s column dresses. But, that's perfect for the current trends toward maxi-length dresses, modest-chic and new minimalism.

Time has proven that this long, lean style is now a classic that will serve you well for decades to come, making it worth the splurge price tag. This particular dress is available in Black (shown here) and White. While the Black is much more versatile (and stain-proof), the white does a much better job of showing of the interesting bias seam details and folded v-shaped back. It's kind of a toss up which is logically the best bet, but there's something about the simplicity of the Black version that has me captivated.

→ Buy the Calvin Klein Collection Savea B Dress, $895.00, at shopbop.com; shipping and returns are free.

How To: Protect Your Hair Color in Summer

Thursday, May 19, 2011 • Permalink •

sponsored by:
Aveeno

The summer months mean a lot of fabulous things: better weather, long days by the pool, sun-drenched vacations, weekend festivals and more. But, all of this fun can be a disaster for color treated hair. Summer has a dark side when it comes to caring for colored hair: UV rays, chlorine and salty ocean water can work together to ruin a winter's worth of salon dedication. The key to protecting your hair color in summer? Think ahead and follow these simple tips:
  1. Use a very gentle shampoo and wash less often, with cool water. Look for shampoo formulas that are sulfate free and specially made for color treated hair. Skip a day in between washes to cut down on how often your hair is exposed to cleansing agents, and use cool water to keep the cuticle closed up and protected during the cleansing process.

  2. Summer Woman
  3. If you are going to be out in the sun, wear a hat. Use the moment as a chance show off your style while you protect your hair -- a big floppy hat looks old-school chic; a straw fedora vibes funky downtown. If a hat is out of the question, look for hair treatments with SPF for an extra dose of protection while you are enjoying the summer sun.

  4. Switch to an ultra rich conditioner formulated for color treated hair. The extra moisture will help your locks fight back against drying sun, heat and hard water, which will help protect your hair color in the process.

  5. If you are going swimming (or wading), wet your hair with clean, fresh water until soaking first. Already wet hair will absorb less chlorine, salty sea water, and other impurities. Or, better yet, slip on a retro swimming cap for total protection.
See, it really isn't that hard to protect your hair color during the summer months. Just think ahead: stock up on extra gentle shampoos and rich conditioners that are made for color treated hair, and take steps to take care of your hair while you are enjoying the summer sun and surf.

The AVEENO® LIVING COLOR™ Hair Care Collection helps to preserve beautiful, vibrant color for up to 40 washes with the help of ACTIVE NATURALS® ingredient Lupine Botanicals. The line includes shampoos and conditioners formulated specifically for fine and medium-thick hair, and a shine glaze to lock in color vibrancy with each use. For more information, visit http://www.aveeno.com/hair-care/living-color.

Steal: Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique Sheath Dress $158

Wednesday, May 18, 2011 • Permalink •

Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique Sheath Dress
There are a few little details that can make an otherwise ordinary dress look a little more high fashion. A unique neckline, interesting sleeves or a non-traditional hem length can create an "is it, or isn't it" designer double take. This Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique Dolman Sleeve Jersey Sheath Dress manages to squeeze in all three standout details without going over the top: high boat neck, dolman sleeves, mid-knee length.

This graphic green stripe print dress reminds me of something that might be seen on a Jil Sander or Helmut Lang runway. The long, lean covered up (yet body conscious) look regularly pops up in both pricey lines. But, this version won't cost you nearly as much as those labels, making it a perfect choice for trying out a new color or silhouette that you're not sure will stay in rotation for more than one season.

I'd continue the artsy fashion look by pairing this dress with architectural shoes in nude for day, or rugged black for night. A contrasting clutch would add a strong, look-at-me element; a neutral bag would let the dress take center stage.

→ Buy the Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique Dolman Sleeve Jersey Sheath Dress, $158.00, at nordstrom.com.

Best Seller: Manolo Blahnik Newcio Leather Pumps

Manolo Blahnik Newcio Leather Pumps
It's really no secret that I have a soft spot for overpriced footwear. On the surface, it may seem like a weakness to be overcome. But, I'm also a pragmatist. Investing a high quality shoes is a smart decision, if done right.

One such smart decision is springing for a top quality classic point-toe pump, in a neutral color, with a work-sensible heel. They will last for years, even decades with the right care and upkeep. Your cost-per-wear will plummet and, in the long run, your splurge can end up costing less than a cheapie shoe that falls apart quickly or gets worn out fast. This kind of intelligent fashion math is why investment shoes always top the best seller lists at major department stores.

Case in point: this gorgeous, simple Manolo Blahnik Newcio point-toe pump is a current best seller at the Saks Fifth Avenue online store. Available in Black, Brown and Camel (shown), this refined pump is textbook shoe investment material. The leather lining and sole will stand the test of time, with proper care, and the covered 2.74" (70 mm) heel is work-appropriate while still being fashionable and elongating.

Wear the Manolo Blahnik Newcio with all of your workwear, from suits to shift dresses, then pair it with your Audrey-esque cocktail frocks during your off hours. Add a point-toe pump to skinny jeans, a slouchy tee and shrunken blazer and you'll suddenly have a bit of a downtown vibe from your investment shoes.

→ Buy the Manolo Blahnik Newcio Pump, $575.00, at saks.com.

It is now very clear that the Middleton sisters are the new hot fashionistas on the block. The week started with everyone wanting to know all about Kate's ballet flats and skinny jeans, and now it's sister Pippa Middleton's style that has everyone talking. And, well, it is kind of fun that the Middleton sisters are such big fans of affordable fashion...

The style experts at the UK's Daily Mail have recently dissected Pippa Middleton's post-wedding style. She was spotted leaving her hotel wearing a super affordable Zara blazer, Tory Burch flats, and a chic structured handbag that has everyone talking. Want to steal Pippa's white handbag style for yourself? She's toting the Modalu Bristol Handbag in Shark.

The Modalu Bristol Handbag, which quickly sold out after the Pippa sighting and is now on pre-order for a June 22 delivery, is crafted from stunning off-white leather. It features exposed zipper details and both top handles and a shoulder strap. If you are loving the style, but want something a little different from the bag Pippa carried, you can also grab this bag in black and tan colors.

Modalu is a UK-based company, but they do ship to the US for £15 (about $24.52). If you happen to live in the UK, Modalu offers free standard shipping via Royal Mail.

→ Buy the Modalu Bristol Handbag, £149.00 (about $243.69), at modalu.com.

Steal: M Missoni Horoscope Bag $29.00

M Missoni Horoscope Bag
Ok, admittedly, I may be going out on a limb labeling this $29 canvas bag as a "steal". But, I have my reasons, not the least of which is that this adorable tote is from the not-so-affordable label M Missoni.

The M Missoni Horoscope bag comes in 12 summery colors -- one for each sign of the zodiac. Each bag is emblazoned with the name of the zodiac sign and the accompanying astrological symbol. My sign, Leo, is pictured here.

This bag would be fun for toting your workday essentials, or for carrying your water bottle and favorite glossy to the beach. And, of course, one of the best parts of this bag is the fun of adding an M Missoni piece to your wardrobe for the cost of a couple of mid-week lunches.

→ Buy the M Missoni Horoscope Bag, $29.00, at shopbop.com; shipping and returns are free.

Shop This: Matthew Williamson for Macy's Impulse

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 • Permalink •

Matthew Williamson for Macy's Sleeveless Printed Ruffle Dress
I never really pictured Matthew Williamson as the type to do a capsule collection for a mainstream mall-store contemporary line. I mean, H&M is one thing, but Matthew Williamson for Macy's? After all, just one of the Central St. Martins grad's main line blouses will set you back nearly a grand -- yes, a 1 with three 0s after it -- and he's been honored with a retrospective at the Design Museum, London. In addition to running his namesake line, he's also served as creative director of Emilio Pucci and continues to show his collection at the renowned London Fashion Week.

It may seem out of place given Matthew Williamson's impeccable fashion credentials, but Matthew Williamson for Macy's Impulse has landed... and it's not a figment of my imagination. The Macy's limited edition capsule collection has a similar floaty, irreverent attitude to the main line, but at prices that come in somewhere around 95% less.

Matthew Williamson for Macy's Long Sleeve Printed Peasant Blouse
Some of the real standouts from the Matthew Williamson for Macy's line are the peasant blouses (like the one pictured at right), which are reminiscent both in pattern and cut to the peasant blouses in the Spring collection for Matthew Williamson's main line. Oh, and by the way, those main line blouses are going for $555.00 to $925.00. The $59.00 Macy's versions are starting to look awfully good.

Also available in the Macy's collection are a handful of pretty dresses, including this One-Shoulder Jeweled Belt Tulip Skirt Dress that echoes the bright color trend we saw at Prada and Jil Sander this Spring. Other stands outs include interesting trousers and skinny jeans, and the requisite luxe-yet-affordable gorgeous leather jacket.

If you are going to go for just one item in the collection, I'd suggest the Matthew Williamson for Macy's Sleeveless Animal Print Ruffle Dress (shown top left). It's maxi dress sister is already sold out, thanks to a pretty print and fashion-forward silhouette. This above-the-knee version will be perfect for all sorts of Spring occasions, from sun-drenched brunches to daytime weddings.

→ Buy the Matthew Williamson for Macy's Sleeveless Printed Ruffle Dress, $99.00, at macys.com.

→ Buy the Matthew Williamson for Macy's Long Sleeve Printed Peasant Blouse, $59.00, at macy's.com

Sale: Mark & James by Badgley Mischka Mason Pumps 40% Off

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 • Permalink •

Mark & James by Badgley Mischka grey woven suede 'Mason' pumps
I love a lightweight, somewhat open shoe for Spring and Summer, but wearing sandals day after day can get boring. An open-weave pump is a nice way to change things up without losing the lightweight feel.

The Mark & James by Badgley Mischka Mason pump is woven from light grey suede, which is interesting in and of itself -- most woven leather tends to be standard-issue smooth leather. This unique pump is lined in leather and sits atop a 5-inch heel. But, one of my favorite features is the interior leather toe cap. This almost imperceptible detail means that you can wear these open weave pumps even if you skip your pedicure appointment.

The Mark & James Mason pump is also available in black, but that kind of defeats the purpose. The dark color drags down an otherwise airy construction. The light grey pumps are perfect for pairing with bright Spring dresses, but would also look quite nice with wide-leg chambray trousers or even Summer-staple white jeans.

→ Buy the Mark & James by Badgley Mischka Mason Pumps, $147.00 (was $245-- save 40%!), at bluefly.com.

FOUND: Kate Middleton's Ballet Flats & Skinny Jeans

Monday, May 09, 2011 • Permalink •

Kate Middleton wearing Hudson skinny jeans, London Sole ballet flats
It was just over a week ago that we were all waiting by our television sets at a really ridiculous time of day (or was it night?) to see what the Royal Wedding had in store for us. It was destined to be a fairy tale wedding of epic proportions, and it didn't disappoint.

Then, of course, we all started wondering when our girl Kate Middleton -- now Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge -- would surface again. Perhaps she'd be spotted honeymooning at a distant tropical locale wearing one of her new beach-perfect Warehouse dresses? Maybe at a fancy state dinner, tiara sitting atop her now royal head? Of course, that would be too expected for our new favorite real-world royal. The first post-wedding public "appearance" of Kate Middleton? At a Waitrose grocery store on the island of Anglesey in Wales, dressed in her casual finest, pushing a grocery cart. I love it.

Yes, as reported first in the UK's Daily Mail, Kate Middleton was spotted at Waitrose, where she did her own shopping and loaded her own bags into the trunk of her rather modest Audi A3. But for her ever-present security detail and famous sapphire engagement ring, the Duchess of Cambridge could have passed for any other young wife running errands. Kate's attire for this rather housewife-y duty? A pair of skinny faded black Hudson jeans and simple black London Sole ballet flats, hair tie poised for duty around her wrist. Skinny jeans and flats to go shopping... maybe she really is just like us.

→ Buy London Sole Ballet Flats, $165.00 - $245.00, at londonsole.com.

→ Buy Hudson Skinny Jeans, $165.00 - $308.00, at hudsonjeans.com.

Best Seller: Bensimon Elastique Tennis Flats

Monday, May 09, 2011 • Permalink •

Bensimon Elastique Tennis Flats
More chic than a sneaker, more relaxed than your standard flat, the Bensimon Elastique Tennis Flat is a great option for casual ensembles when a sneaker is just too, well, sneaker-y. It's also a current best seller at online fashion boutique ShopBop.

The Bensimon Elastique Tennis Flat is a canvas flat with rubber toe cap, sidewall and sole. It features interesting seam details that make it a bit more fashionable than a plain canvas flat. It comes in 6 colors, including basic beige and white, but the Gris Moyen (regular grey) and Gris Fonce (dark grey) are my favorite. They are less stark than black, but can serve essentially the same function in your closet -- a simple neutral that will pair well with most other colors. The Gris Moyen version is pictured here.

→ Buy the Bensimon Elastique Tennis Flats, $57.00, at shopbop.com; shipping and returns are free.

3 Oily Skin Fixes Under $30

Wednesday, May 04, 2011 • Permalink •

--By Kim Moshtaghi

Having a job at a cosmetic clinic can be overwhelming, but it can also be so informative. I love being able to see what simple things really work, without spending hundreds of dollars. Of course, there are skincare products that are wonderful and expensive, but in this article I will be showcasing two products under $10 that can keep your skin happy along with your bank account. I am keeping in mind that there are different skin types out there, but this week's post will be for the greasy gals, like me.

If you have oily skin it is important to know you do not need moisturizer. Instead of a moisturizer in the morning use a great oil free sunscreen. If oily skin is your problem, then why keep moisturizing it? Although it is wise to keep in mind that most acne products may dry out the skin, and, in that case, using oil free moisturizer when needed is a good idea.

One of my ultimate must-haves in my makeup bag is Clearasil StayClear Acne Treatment Cream. It is 10 % Benzoyl Peroxide spot treatment that eliminates pimples by drying them out. It acts as a camouflage, reduces the pimple, and then voila it is gone! Knowing that this spot treatment is with me all the time helps. It’s a great travel buy for the warm summer months.

Clearasil StayClear Acne Treatment Cream

→ Buy Clearasil StayClear Acne Treatment Cream, $6.29, at drugstore.com

Using a daily aggressive wash when you have acne is crucial, but it is even more important to pick something that won’t tear your skin up. Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment is perfect. It allows you to wash your skin twice a day, every day, without turning it into sandpaper. This is a smart choice for those that get acne once in a while, but don’t have severe acne issues. If you have a bad acne problem, I recommend looking for a 5% Benzoyl Peroxide everyday face wash (not spot treatment). Otherwise, this daily wash will help create smooth and even skin.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment

→ Buy Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment, $7.99, at drugstore.com.

The best way to avoid aging dramatically is to stay out of the sun. Since that is nearly impossible, it is a must to have a sunscreen that has a good amount of zinc oxide and doesn’t cause breakouts or an allergic reaction. I have found Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46 to be the best Paraben-free sunscreen out there. It goes on smooth and is non-greasy. It feels soft and is a perfect base before you apply makeup. I love the fact that it goes on lightweight.

Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46

→ Buy Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46, $29.00, at dermstore.com.

Stay tuned for next week's dry skin drama cures!

Best Seller: Marc by Marc Jacobs Skull Tee

Wednesday, May 04, 2011 • Permalink •

Marc by Marc Jacobs 10th Anniversary Skulls Tee
Leaving aside the fact that pretty much everything that the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection turns out ends up selling well, this new tee from the line is a selling standout -- a best selling item from the Saks Fifth Avenue contemporary section.

The Marc by Marc Jacobs Skull Tee is part of the Marc by Marc Jacobs 10 Year Anniversary Collection. It features abstract skulls, and a subtle Marc Jacobs signature, on super soft cotton. It's a fun print, but not too juvenile for us grown ups. I'm really liking the idea of this tee under a black blazer and paired with skinny jeans for a kind of rock-chic a la Marc look. For a more relaxed ensemble, try pairing it with a denim skirt and flat sandals.

→ Buy the Marc by Marc Jacobs Skulls Tee, $68.00, at saks.com.

Top 3 Very Black Mascaras

Tuesday, May 03, 2011 • Permalink •

Black mascara -- very black mascara -- is my absolute favorite makeup item. Now, that doesn't mean that I'm sporting a smoky eye everyday, but it does mean that I like my lashes dark black no matter what other eye makeup I choose to wear. In my quest to find the ideal ultra black mascara for all occasions, I've tried dozens of brands and formulations. These three have risen to the top of the pile (for the time being, at least), each for a different reason.

Contrary to what the name would have you believe, Benefit BADgal Lash mascara is actually the most tame of the three mascaras here. It goes on smooth and clump-free, but has a deep black color that is gorgeous for everyday wear.

Benefit Cosmetics BADgal Lash Mascara

→ Buy Benefit Cosmetics BADgal Lash Mascara, $9.00 - $19.00, at sephora.com.

Looking for a little more length with your ultra black mascara? Dior's Diorshow Blackout mascara combines a glossy, ultra black color with lash-lengthening effects.

Dior DiorShow Black Out Mascara

→ Buy Dior DiorShow Black Out Mascara, $24.50, at sephora.com.

For very plump, and very black, lashes give Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash a try. It goes on super thick and creates huge, sooty black lashes that look like they came off of the runway. Perhaps not everybody's idea of a daily mascara, but definitely high-drama.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Smoky Lash

→ Buy Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash Mascara, $22.00, at sephora.com.
