The Best Nail Polish Trends 2011

Nail polish trends that match fashion trends. Each designer has a different vision for fall and winter 2011, but there are always overlapping trends. This year I have chosen nail polish colors that parallel designer trends and colors. Dazzling colors and edgier designs from Robert Cavalli. From Ferragamo and Valentino, I have chosen glamorous, sophisticated nail colors. Then there are the dark, intense colors that go with this year's Gucci trends. There's a nail polish trend to match every fashion trend.

Some ladies, like my mother, would never be caught dead wearing anything but ladylike colors on her nails. Although the term "ladylike" is relative, in my mother's eyes that means light and classic nail colors. So, for all the "moms" and for people like me who can't wear bold colors to their day job, try O.P.I.'s classic Dulce de Leche. Sexy Knee High and Over the Knee Boots for Fall

Sexy knee high and over the knee boots are always a fashionable item for the fall and winter months, but sometimes we wear them inappropriately. Although they can transform a blah outfit to a fabulous dream look, they can also make you like Julia Roberts in Pretty Women. Even though we love Roberts in that role, it is important to realize that she is starring as a prostitute.

Personally, I won’t wear heeled knee high boots with a skirt. Some flowy dresses look nice with tall-heeled knee high boots, but otherwise I’d say it’s a no. However, knee high and over the knee boots of any kind look fantastic with skinny jeans and leggings. They really spunk up an outfit and make it look more thoughtful.

Over the knee shoes are difficult to wear when it’s your first time. They feel odd, similar to the feeling you experienced when you first wore high heels. Although, once you get used to the feeling, you will be addicted to this easy and fun fashion trend. Easy meaning it transforms an outfit when worn.

Fall's Best Riding Boots: 7 Must-Have Pair

Now that Fall is upon us, one of the first purchases many of us will be making is a new pair of boots. As usual, there's a huge selection of different styles to choose from in the boot department. Why it's hot: Capes and ponchos (and all manner of combining the two) are super hot again for fall. I'm pretty excited as I've had a favorite knit wool poncho in storage since the last time these silhouettes were part of the fashion in crowd -- about 7 years ago. And, this time around, this trend has spawned lots of unique takes on the look using unexpected fabrics and detailing. This James Perse Cape Sweater is one of those unique takes.

This James Perse find is a belted cape sweater made from fleece -- yes, the same kind of fleece you'd expect to find in the sweatshirt department. Granted, James Perse only deals in the really nice kind of fleece --this time a luxe cotton/ linen/ wool blend -- but it's still cozy sweatshirt-like fabric. This particular sweater makes use of both the "right" side of the fleece and the underside of the fleece fabric to create a look that is refined and interesting, without losing the comfy feel. The slightly long self-belt also adds to the more upscale look. Overall, it's a unique take on the Fall cape/ poncho trend that happens to also be made from a fabric that is super comfortable.

Chic Black and White Clothing for All Occasions

Black and white is a brilliant and classic combination. Two simple colors from the opposite ends of the spectrum unite to create a marvelous and sought after look. The combination is very yin and yang, and it creates a harmonious blend that can be accompanied by any third color you desire. It is rare to have two colors get along with another color without traumatizing the eye. Of course, there are 3 color combos that are nice, but they take more brain power to put together. When I'm in a hurry and can't think of a complete outfit, I know my black and white jacket or my black and white dress will go with any pair of shoes.

Maybe it's just me, but lately I've had to wear a lot of dresses because all my friends are getting married. Naturally, after the 4th wedding in the last few months my dress situation is getting frustrating. I can't wear the same one over and over again. Plus, I can't afford to keep buying fancy dresses that I will rarely wear again. So, a basic and sophisticated black and white dress is worth the purchase. I'm deeply engrossed in Season 4 of The Rachel Zoe Project and I've just got to say, wasn't Rachel the most amazingly stylish pregnant woman ever? Now, I know she has a fleet of people to help her look amazing and put-together every day, but still. There is an inherent fabulousness to Rachel Zoe that shines through. Fashion Cents: $150 Budget Shopping Spree

I had the pleasure of spending Fashion's Night Out (the first Thursday of New York Fashion Week) at the GAP with a Fashion Cents viewer - Jill. She won a $150 gift card from the GAP to get styled by me during Gap's Fashion's Night Out Event in Chicago.

Jill is a professional woman in her 40s who DJs at night - hot, right? So she wanted to get something she could wear to her night job.

I always have the GAP on my places to shop for staples like button down shirts, sweaters, well fitting jeans, and premium pants which are updated each season with the latest trends. This season the premium pants come in a wide legged trouser, cropped pant and even a cropped flared pant. If you couldn't tell...I'm a fan. With the new season of Gossip Girl upon us, it's time to jump back into locating the best fashions from the style-conscious show. One of the first stand outs to surface is this beige feather vest worn by Blake Lively as Serena Van der Woodsen on the new season of Gossip Girl.

5 Wearable, Versatile Leather Skirts

Does the idea of a leather skirt conjure up images of tarty women in skin-tight black minis? You're not alone. When I first heard whispers that a leather skirt was going to be a must-buy for Fall 2011, my mind immediately went to the black mini... and shuddered. But, thankfully, designers had something totally different in mind this year. I think you'll agree, just about anyone can pull off one of these stylish leather skirts.

For Fall 2011, the leather skirt is anything but mini and available in a range of colors beyond basic black. The new generation of leather skirts can even go to the office -- albeit a fairly creative office, but we'll take what we can get. Check out some of my picks for the best ways to snag a truly wearable leather skirt, and how to style it.

Sale: Vince Cocoon Ribbed Sweater $199.00

I literally just bought this sweater. Luckily, I also scored a decent deal on it, otherwise I'd be awfully bitter right now. Regardless, I highly recommend this gorgeous sweater, particularly at this great price, courtesy of Neiman Marcus Last Call.

The Vince Cocoon Ribbed Sweater is made from a super soft yak/ wool blend. I know, yak sounds kind of crazy. Vince has put out a number of yak and yak-blend sweaters this season. I was doubtful about the yak mini-trend until I tried this one on. As a die-hard cashmere devotee, I can honestly say I can hardly tell the difference between this sweater and my favorite Vince cashmere concoctions. The blend is insanely soft and luxurious, and this sweater in particular is dense and lofty -- just what you want from a sweater in the dead of winter.

Beyond the super soft construction, this sweater also has a lot of unique style to it. The deep v-neck has half-length dolman sleeves and a variable rib knit. The really fun part is the faux wrap front. It's almost like there are two sweaters: a fitted one underneath, and then the faux wrap layer over top. It's so hard to tell in this mannequin picture, but the combination of the two knitted layers hangs really well when it's on an actual human -- the fitted layer shows off your form, while the faux wrap layer glides over the top, nicely disguising your mid-section.

Cashmere Cardigans: 5 You'll Want to Wear Every Day

My addiction to cashmere cardigans is strong, and growing stronger every day. I wear them year-round, thanks to an office that oscillates between two temperatures: arctic and merely cold. But, my love of the cashmere cardigan extends well beyond its utility. They are classic, but can add a punch of color that pulls an outfit together. They are cozy and comforting, but never look sloppy. They are luxe, but not pretentious. Really, I'm a big fan.

A great workout is the best way to unwind from a long stressful day at work. Whether you choose to work out hard or light, having the right fun workout gear can be empowering. It feels good to look cute before hitting the gym, or using the outdoors as a gym, because it keeps one motivated. When I go for a hike or hit the gym I try to coordinate, or at least feel good in, what I wear to help me keep going. And when I have attained my goals, I can reward my hard work with cute work out clothes.

Recently, I have been looking for a tennis skirt in order to take some tennis lessons. I wanted simple, yet cute so I can even wear it walking along the beach. I found was I was looking for in an adorable plain black Lucy Propel Run Skirt. It works by not keeping in moisture, and the boy short lining will prevent me from giving away a free peep show. 4 Ways to Rock Sexy Fur Trim for Fall

Fur... fur... and more fur. Nothing spices up a fall outfit like fur. Try adding a fur trim to an old vest. The combination is creative and allows you to use a piece of clothing that you would otherwise leave in your closet. However, as always, there was an inspiration to this article.

While mingling at a charity event I spotted some gal's hot Giuseppe Zanotti shoes. The designer wrapped a fur trim around the ankle. I know the brand because I couldn't resist asking her. I couldn't find the shoes anywhere but, according to the beauty wearing them, they were a couple of seasons old. Although, I did find a sexy pair of mink Giuseppe Zanotti fur boots that will blow your socks off! Giuseppe Zanotti made these Russian-inspired mink boots for a goddess and they will rock any look for the fall and winter. The black boots have a little color detail along the top of the boot, and colored Swarovski crystals wrap around the boot giving it a touch of color and bling.

It's a rare shoe that can look just as spot-on in Fall as it does in Summer. This is one such fabulous find. The MICHAEL Michael Kors Ines Platform is made from a rich brown suede with goldtone detail buckle. It features a 4.5" heel with a generous 1" platform, for the feel of a 3.5" heel. The sole is manmade, which is shoe world code for rubber (or other similar product) that is less likely to slip and slide than a more traditional leather sole.

The open criss-cross style is a great way to show off your pedicure during the last few days and weeks of summer. Chunky sweaters are big again this fall, with unique color combinations and knitting techniques being particularly popular. Smart, Stylish Cardigans for Summer to Fall

Layers are so important at the end of summer. It's been ridiculously muggy in San Diego lately, but, like many cities, usually there is a significant temperature decrease from day to night. It's always wise to carry a cardigan in a bag, or carry along a pretty shawl to accompany your outfit, to be ready for a temperature drop.

I prefer to have a sweater or some sort of cover up in the back of my car as well in case I need to throw it on, or anyone else I'm with forgets to bring something to transition into nighttime weather. I like to safe keep a solid black sweater similar to this Alfani sweater. It has long sleeves and typically hits at the hip and tends to be appropriate for casual occasions. I don't like to keep my fancy cover-ups in the trunk of my car!

Fall's Best Loafer Heels for All Budgets

I love watching old trends come back into style, and the re-interest in loafer heels has me feeling particularly nostalgic. I met my best friend over a pair of identical stacked-heel loafers. It was the first our first semester of college. The big movie of the summer was Clueless, which had a huge influence on fall fashion trends. Soon-to-be BFF and I both showed up in identical black leather heeled loafers, which mirrored the loafers worn by Cher in Clueless. Really, there's nothing like identical taste in shoes to cement a friendship or start a rivalry... luckily we went the friendship route.

You can see why this fall's huge shoe trend -- loafer heels -- has me intrigued. It's one of the best trends of my fashion-formative years, reworked and refreshed for a new century. So, what's new since this trend arrived in the mid-'90s? This time around, the heels are taller and thinner, leathers and fabrics are more luxurious, and silhouettes are less about just adding a heel to a classic loafer and more about being merely inspired by a loafer and building from there.

It's not very often that I completely change my mind on a shoe line, but this is one of those rare occasions. If you remember, in my initial review of the new Rachel Zoe Collection clothing line, I expressed my disappointment with the accessories in the line. The first few shoes and handbags stocked by Bloomingdale's and Neiman Marcus were boring and kind of cheap looking. But, I've since discovered a bright light in the line's accessories offerings.

I just ran across the Rachel Zoe Audrey Platform Booties on the Best Sellers list at online fashion boutique ShopBop. Not only do these sky-high booties have a sleek, on-trend look that is perfect for Fall 2011, their reptile-embossed calf leather construction actually vibes more expensive than their mid-priced price tag. I can definitely see why these gorgeous boots are current best sellers.

The Audrey Bootie has a 5.5" heel with a generous 1.75" platform, for the feel of just a 3.75" heel. I mean, that's practically running height for the high heel-addicted. They have a leather-covered elastic gore insets rather than a zip, which creates a really sleek line and the look of an uninterrupted expanse of leather. The sole is leather which, while luxe, may be a little slippery. But, that's easily remedied with stick-on grips.

Wear these stand-out boots with skinny jeans and chunky sweaters for a great fall look. Or, if you are feeling particularly daring, try pairing them with a black skirt for a look that is runway-inspired.

Nike Training Club Week 6: Some Final Thoughts

Can you believe it's been 6 weeks already? Yep, that's right. It has been 6 weeks since I first took on the Nike Training Club Challenge. I vowed to give the free Nike Training Club App -- available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch -- a spin and document my adventure here for all of you to read. I've had my ups and downs, and learned a few things along the way. Now the time has come to leave you all with a few parting thoughts about my time with the App.

First, let's talk about the App itself. It's free (always a plus) and easy to find in the App Store. It's pretty intuitive to operate -- no instructions necessary -- and visually appealing, with lots of cool features, like the ability to work out to your own music playlists.

Now, about the actual workouts. I chose the Get Toned program, but there are other fully customizable programs for other fitness needs, like losing weight or strengthening. You can mix and match the exercises in each program as there are many little self-contained tutorials in each program. And really, that was my favorite part. I never have time to do a proper workout, so I loved that I could learn perfect little exercises that target my particular fitness needs via the App. As I pointed out in a previous week's review, I ended up doing some of my newly learned exercises independent of the App from time to time. I know that's not the point of the whole fancy, high-tech App thing, but I loved that this was really the first time I found a program that actually taught me something. Bonus points to NTC.

Results? Ok, so I'm not the best when it comes to keeping up a fitness routine. But, I will admit that I've been more consistent with Nike Training Club than just about anything I've tried since grad school. The exercises are easier than when I started and I do feel vaguely stronger. I'm quite slender to begin with, and losing weight/ inches wasn't a goal, so I don't have any quantitative results to share with you. But, I am on the whole quite pleased with the experience. I think the NTC App is perfect for people like me who are short on time and low on motivation. It makes working out fun, easy and simple -- all things that help when trying to fit yet another activity into an already over-filled day. I'm glad I got a chance to try it out and I will keep using it in the future.

New & Hot: Giles Deacon for Nine West Bernadette Flats

What: Giles Deacon for Nine West Bernadette Flats in Black Pony Hair

Why they're hot: I know I'm in the minority on this one, but overall I'm not all that impressed by the 8-piece Giles Deacon collaboration with mall staple shoe store Nine West. I had hoped for a collection that more closely mirrored the Giles Deacon Fall 2011 RTW collection -- all buttery black leather, ostrich feathers and a hefty dose of drama. Instead, the collab is primarily influenced by the Spring 2011 RTW show, which was a cartoonish confection liberally sprinkled with Deacon's cartoon mouse character Eek. So be it.

A very notable exception to the otherwise so-so nature of the line are the Bernadette Flats, which do bring to mind that outstanding Fall 2011 collection. These pointy-toe flats are made from black pony hair (aka calf hair), with a black leather buckle detail placed diagonally across the toe. The buckle has a subtle bright orange highlight along the sides of the strap. These flats are the only items in the collection made in pony hair, which is a shame because that material adds just enough drama to make these shoes stand out.

What to wear them with: I'd pair these flats with a pair of straight-leg black trousers for work. The pony hair and tiny bit of orange detailing will add a luxe edge to your workday basic pants. To really show off the shoe, try them with Fall's must-have cropped trouser or use them to snazz up your weekend boyfriend jeans. To create a dramatic flair, I'd add these flats to a below-the-knee slinky knit pencil skirt. It's not a hard and fast fashion no-no, but I'm personally not fond of flats with skirts that are knee length or shorter -- there's just something about that combo that doesn't sit well with me. Just saying.

Shimmering Goddess is another fashion trend this season. Instead of turning all the lights on, why not conserve some energy and be the glitz and sparks. I’m not talking overboard sparkle madness like Lady Gaga, but maybe a more subtle one like Beyonce’s eyes or Heidi Klum’s random shiny clothes. There is nothing more vibrant and fun than when someone wears sequins or glitter in a more relaxed, non-trendy way. After what seems like an eternity of anticipation, Karl Lagerfeld for Macy's Impulse has finally landed. Is it worth the hype? I'd say so.
