Spring Preview: Top Wedges for Day and Night

It has been a while since I bought wedges, but I recently found myself falling head over heels for a pair of accessorized black suede wedges, and they inspired me to share some other great finds with everyone. I have always praised wedges for their comfort and casual look because whether you are out dancing or spending your time at work, wedges look stylish without killing your feet.

These next several showcases come from Nordstrom. First up is a pair of Nine West wedges that are colorful and have a gorgeous ankle strap that brightens every angle of the shoe. This is a great option for ladies that don't like wearing high heeled shoes.

Check out Vince Camuto's wedges. They are sleek and sophisticated with only two colors to work with, as opposed to the multi-colored Nine West shoes. They complement each other well and go well with other colors.

If color is not your thing, and the plain-Jane black look keeps you excited, then try BCBG's closed toe wedges. The jewel topped bow wedge is girly without being tacky, and the simple black satin color and dark jewel really keep this shoe on the sophisticated side.

If the previous wedges are too bright or too simple, then you will love Bebe's crochet natural wedge. The heel is wooden and the shoe comes in black, but I think the natural color is much nicer. At 7 inches tall, this heel is an extremely high, so be prepared! If walking in heels has always been a challenge for you, then I would definitely stay away, but if being tall and proud is your cup of tea then I wouldn't snooze on this bohemian pair. I think this shoe would look nice against a nice olive or tan skin tone color.

If you save wedges as part of your evening attire, then I would snag this criss-cross black and gold Aldo wedge. This wedge is super sassy and would look great with most evening attire. I like that the criss-cross across the top of the ankle is a shiny gold and the rest of the shoe is suede looking fabric. Be bold and paint your nails an apple red to make this a perfect, comfortable nighttime shoe!

Spring Preview: The H&M Spring Trend Guide for Women

Affordable fashion happy place H&M has just released their Spring 2012 Trend Guide on video. Personally, I love watching H&M's trend guides each season. I get super overwhelmed when I walk in H&M -- all I can see is cheapie tees and polyester suits. But, when I've done my homework via the Trend Guide, I suddenly am able to pick out those 5 or 10 super special pieces that scream runway but cost practically nothing. It's such a great way to cheat... too bad it can't help you skip the pay line!

This year the H&M Trend Guide calls out pastels, new ways of color blocking, silk trousers, pencil skirts and grown up looks with great tailoring. Plenty of lovers will be swapping gold gifts for Valentines Day. Earrings, watches, maybe even an engagement ring. Amidst the love, magic and joy however could be the less than happy truth about where that gold came from and it’s a dirty secret few fail, or refuse to confront.

Gold has rocketed in price this year. The producers involved in gold mining don’t get as much attention as the banana or coffee bean producers of the world, but equally if not more serious social problems exist. Last July, BBC Dispatches programme highlighted these problems in the episode, ‘Dispatches: The Real Price of Gold’. Going undercover as a customer shopping in some of the biggest British jewellery stores, the journalist was given wildly misleading information by shop assistants. In Senegal, the journalist meets a child who works in an illegal mine, revealing his hazardous daily existence. Supply chains are difficult to trace, and quite frankly, a gold ring brought from many of the main retailers could have come from anywhere.

Fairtrade Gold

An estimated 15 million people work in artisanal and small scale mining, many illegally. On a daily basis they risk disease, serious injury and even death. Six times as many accidents occur in small scale mining than in large industrial mines. So how can you be sure your festive symbol of love isn’t tainted with a dark history?

On 14th February 2011 the first Fairtrade certified gold was launched. Certified by the Fairtrade Foundation, Fairtrade gold means that the miners receive a guaranteed minimum price, receive a premium payment which is invested in community projects and work to develop long term business relations. It also means that the miners adopt safe working practices, recognize the rights of female miners and are respectful of the environment.

Fairtrade Shopping

Fairtrade and Fairmined gold can now be purchased from more than 25 jewellers and clothes shops including Garrard, Cred, Fifi Bijoux and Leonard of London. The majority of Cred’s gold and platinum comes from small scale miners in Columbia. Cred’s unique 18ct white gold is made with a higher-than-normal palladium content, giving the same classic colour and finish with no need for Rhodium plating. They have a large range of beautiful, ethical, solitaire, trilogy and eternity rings at a price to suit every shopper.

Luxury London jeweller Garrard offer engagement rings in Fairtrade gold, as does jeweller Stephen Webster who has stated that one day they aim to use 100% Fairtrade gold. Garrard is the oldest jewellery house in the world, founded in 1722 with a history of producing jewellery for the Royal family. What could be better than fine jewellery with an impeccable background for a woman who deserves only the best?

Funny how, now that Oprah Winfrey isn't beaming straight into our homes everyday via her broadcast television show, we're all super obsessed with Oprah sightings. Case in point: all of the news sites, blogs and entertainment TV shows were abuzz yesterday with news of Oprah's visit to The Taj Mahal in Agra, India. Oprah was in town filming scenes for her new cable show Oprah's Next Chapter.

Evidently, it was Oprah's first visit to The Taj Mahal and she enjoyed the occasion like any first time tourist would: by taking a picture. Under $100: Pour La Victoire Bliss Pumps

Looking for a fabulous shoe quick fix for under $100? Check out this super cute new find...

The Pour La Victoire shoe label is probably best known for the best-selling Irina platform, which took the mid-priced shoe world by storm a couple of seasons ago. But, that's not the only great shoe Pour La Victoire has to offer. The label makes a range of shoes that are both fashionable and affordable, even more so when on sale.

While browsing for great shoes newly marked down, I ran into these Pour La Victoire Bliss Pumps. They are a classic almond-toe pump, made from either suede or leather, depending on the color you select. All colors have a quality leather lining and leather sole. The heel measures 4.75" with a 1" platform, making the heel feel more like 3.75".

The selection of Bliss Pumps I found includes four different colors -- Grey Nappa Bat (pictured here), Black Kid Nappato, Black Kid Suede, and Silver Snake Print. All four colors/ leathers are available in a good range of sizes. All except the Black Suede are marked down to under $100. My favorite part about February being around the corner is that high heels and exposed toes are returning to fashion fairly soon. Although it's not happening yet in most states, living in San Diego allows me to expose toes and embrace the stiletto world before others. The warmer climate lets me explore the sky-high club, which means I get to take advantage of high heels and peep toes before my East coast sisters. Although I look forward to wearing boots in October, by the time February is around the corner I'm bored with my calf-hugging boots. I'm excited to move on and free myself from the calf leeches.

Splurge: Alexander Wang Emile Small Frenchbull Tote

What is it about handbags? I don't get the addiction. I don't need any more handbags. I mean, I have 10 or 12 (I try not to count). That's plenty. But... argh... I don't have this handbag. And I want it. It's super splurge-worthy.

The Alexander Wang Emile Small Frenchbull Tote is a heavily structured bag, despite what the "tote" name would imply. It's crafted from ultra luxe leather in this rich, deep burgandy-brown color. I think the color is what initially drew me in, but it's the details that kept me enthralled.

The slotted detail on the front is eye-catching because of its uniqueness, but the fact that it's all the same color and texture of leather keeps it simple. The metal feet are also quite unique -- I'm not sure that I've seen another bag that has this style of photo-corner metal feet. Finally, the dual handles give you some options for carrying -- more casual with the shoulder strap or more formal with the top handle.

Altogether, this best selling bag from the Saks Fifth Avenue online store is a classic choice that will remain relevant from season to season, making it worth the significant price tag.

What: 10 Crosby Derek Lam, the new, lower-priced line from contemporary American designer Derek Lam.

Why it's hot: Derek Lam, a native of San Francisco, founded his eponymous New York City-based label in 2002 after 12 years of designing for Michael Kors. The label was pretty much an instant success, winning the CFDA Perry Ellis-Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in Womenswear and the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund Prize, both in 2005, as well as CFDA Accessory Designer of the Year in 2007. And, really, what's not to love about Derek Lam? The clothes are modern and feminine, but not overly so, and ultra luxurious. Oh, wait, there's that whole price thing...

Derek Lam clothing is expensive. A tunic will set you back about $600.00. Looking for a fun frock? That will cost you somewhere in the $5,000.00 to $7,000.00 range. Eyeing some of his creations in leather or fur? Get ready to spend upwards of $15-20k. Ouch.

That's what makes 10 Crosby Derek Lam so hot. It's the label's first journey into affordable clothing. The pieces have a modern femininity that echoes the main line, but at prices that hover around several hundred, rather than several thousand, dollars. Ok, so it's not exactly toss-on-and-go weekend wear prices, but it is a whole lot easier to swallow than the main line prices.

Where to wear it: The 10 Crosby Derek Lam debut collection has a surprising versatility to it. The pieces range from simple sweaters, dresses and tops that are completely perfect for the weekend, to smart blazers that could go to the office, to breezy dresses for special occasions. One of my favorite shopping moments is when you find a budget piece that is super unique and feels like something you saw on the runway, but isn't so close to a designer pick to look like a knock off. It's a serendipitous happening that doesn't come along all that often. This suit find creates that exact feeling.

The ASOS Boyfriend Blazer and Pencil Skirt with Fluro Trim is created from a lightweight, stretchy polyester/ viscose/ elastane mix -- which sounds a whole lot like a stretch jersey-type blend -- in heather grey with a bright lime trim or navy blue with bright orange trip. The cut of both the blazer and the skirt is a little more modern, but not completely crazy. It's fresh. And, get this, the ensemble is machine washable!

If you work in a more creative environment, this is the exact right way to rock a non-stuffy suit. Alternatively, each piece could easily be paired with other items for a more mix-and-match look. I'd try the blazer with slouchy boyfriend jeans and super high heels. Or, the skirt could be worn with a tank top and booties for an athletic-inspired look. In case the color scheme of this blog didn't tip you off, green is my favorite color. And not just any green. Blake Brody Makes Fashionable Pilates, Barre and Yoga Shoes

Let's face it, going barefoot in the yoga studio is kind of gross. But, there isn't much of an alternative. Traditional athletic shoes aren't flexible enough; socks are too slippery to maintain poses. It's about time someone came up with a solution.

I first read about Blake Brody shoes in the November issue of People StyleWatch magazine. This ingenious new shoe line is designed specifically for studio fitness classes where going barefoot is traditional -- pilates, yoga and barre classes, as well as other no-impact mat classes. The designs are made to fit snugly so they won't come off during your classes, and are both breathable and anti-microbial (yay!). These indoor-only shoes are also designed to help increase stability with a no-slip fabric sole.

The prices did strike me as a little high for a pilates / yoga / barre shoe, but when I consider the price of athletic shoes for other workout-type sports, it seems about right. The range is from $98.00 for a basic shoe, to just over $200 for a super stylized version.

5 Easy-to-Keep, High Impact Beauty Resolutions

'Tis the season for unrealistic resolutions that get broken within a couple weeks. Why not switch things up this year and adopt a resolution that's both easy to keep and has a high-impact outcome that will make your effort worthwhile? I've collected here my favorite past beauty resolutions, along with my tips for how to easily incorporate that resolution into your regular set of beauty habits.

1. Resolve to take off your makeup every night.
Your complexion will clear, your eyelashes will get healthier, and, in the long run, you'll ward off icky crow's feet. I suggest getting in the habit of taking off your makeup as soon as you get home. Not only does it create a habit that is easy to remember, it also allows your night creams and potions to have a longer time to work.

Personally, I hate the makeup remover/ cleanser/ toner dance. Such a time sink. Instead, I opt for an all-in-one makeup remover and cleanser. I've been stuck on Fresh Soy Face Cleanser for a couple years. It removes all of my makeup -- including mascara -- and feels like a spa treatment. For similar all-in-one cleaning, you can also try Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser and Philosophy Purity Made Simple. Even an all-in-one too much of a commitment? Try keeping makeup remover wipes in a caddy next to your bed, along with your night cream. Then, even if you make it into bed with makeup on, you can still do the right thing without getting up again.

2. Resolve to wear sunscreen every day.
You won't see immediate benefits, so you've got to stick with it. But, one day it will dawn on you that your effort has paid off. I've been diligently wearing sunscreen daily since my early twenties, and I have significantly less wrinkling, discoloration, freckling, and pores than the average woman my age. I totally credit the sunscreen.

I've found the easiest way to stick to this resolution is to switch your normal daily moisturizer to a moisturizer with sunscreen. It isn't like you're going to skip moisturizer, right? My current pick is Origins Brighter by Nature SPF 35. I'm also a huge fan of Clinique Superdefense SPF 25. You can find similar formulations from Olay and Neutrogena.

3. Resolve to wear eye cream.
Reasonable experts and beauty junkies disagree about whether a designated eye cream is really all that much better for keeping your eye area in shape than a regular treatment cream. That being said, I've found that a luxe, extra rich eye cream reminds me to treat my eye area just as I treat the rest of my face. Over the years, this practice has resulted in a well-moisturized eye area free of wrinkles and not particularly prone to bags. I'm a believer.

My current eye regimen is Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging Eye Cream at night and Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream during the day. The Plantscription line has been proven to be about 80% as effective as prescription retinoids in repairing wrinkles and other visible signs of aging, but without the irritation. I love it. The GinZing has illuminating particles that work in conjunction with your undereye concealer to make you look awake, on top of its normal moisturizing and de-puffing properties. Other favorites over the years have included Benefit and Kinerase.

4. Resolve to exfoliate twice a week.
Every year that passes your skin takes just a little bit longer to get rid of that top layer of dead skin. That means that your skin becomes progressively more dull. By getting rid of that dull outer layer, your skin will instantly (seriously!) look brighter and clearer, and your pores will look smaller.

The gold standard of exfoliating is to use a manual exfoliant once a week and an enzyme-based exfoliant once a week, with 3-4 days between them. I use Bliss Pore Perfecting Facial Polish as my manual exfoliant on Wednesday, and Bliss Steep Clean as my enzyme exfoliant on Sunday. I'm also fond of Kate Somerville ExfoliKate (manual + enzyme), Origins Modern Friction (manual) and Origins Never a Dull Moment (manual + enzyme).

5. Resolve to get regular facials.
Ok, this one requires a significant budget commitment, which isn't for everyone. But, if you have the means and are interested in a beauty resolution with real impact, regular facials are the way to go. It's amazing how your skin will respond. You can basically ditch the foundation and blemish concealer after a few months, and after a year you'll notice that discoloration and pores are pretty much non-existent.

I've been going to Gailee at Bliss San Francisco every 6 weeks for about a year and a half. I make sure to make new appointments before I leave the spa, which also results in a 10% discount at Bliss spas, and I always ask for the email reminder. By pre-booking appointments as soon as you done with your current visit you'll be sure to keep up the habit.

7 Tips for Easy Gift Returns

Returning gifts is such a drag many of us simply toss unwanted presents into a closet with the hopes of re-gifting them in the future. Sadly, waiting in line for returns and exchanges is a ritual many of us still honor. A recent Consumer Reports survey revealed one-in-five Americans plan on celebrating this post-holiday tradition. If you anticipate joining the lengthy queues, keep these seven tips in mind.

1. Don't Open What You Don't Want
Because the merchant can't resell opened items as new, you could be charged a hefty restocking fee just for cracking the lid. Amazon cranks up the charge to 50 percent for software, used books and DVDs; but Overstock takes the cake at 60 percent for open or used products.

2. Keep an Eye on the Date
Some stores have extended the number of days during which you can return holiday gifts, but most still hold to their standard policy. Remember the expiration date is from the time of purchase. In "Return rules at 8 big retailers" published last year, Consumer Reports found the average return period ranged from 30 to 180 days.

3. Resell Gift Cards
You don't need a receipt to exchange unwanted gift cards for cash. Visit GiftCardGranny.com, where you can resell gift cards to several companies for a percentage of the face value.

4. Keep the Gift Receipt
If some thoughtful friend or loved one was kind enough to include a gift receipt, this is your golden ticket for exchanges or returns. Keep in mind that, because such receipts don't indicate the purchase price, the store likely will only reimburse you at the going rate.

5. If You Don't Have a Receipt...
...bring an ID. More than 60 percent of retailers require a customer to show ID when returning an item without a receipt. This is because some stores limit how many times you can return purchases within a set time period.

6. Research the Return Policy
Retailers with websites almost always post their return policies. They may be difficult to find at first, so search under links for "Customer Service," "FAQ" or "Help." You'll find lots of small type, but it's worth reading through all the mouse scrawlings to know exactly what you'll face.

7. Avoid Shipping Charges
Many major retailers -- but not all -- will accept returns of online purchases at their brick-and-mortar stores. You might have to wait in line, but you'll save a bundle on shipping and the hassle of re-boxing a gift and mailing it out.

Steal: Warehouse Paisley Print Dress $80.00

I ran across this Paisley Print Dress while casually browsing the new arrivals at UK-based affordable fashion retailer Warehouse. It's chic, fashion-forward and so inexpensive. Hard to top that.

Several things about this dress stand out to me. First, I'm loving the demure, retro-inspired silhouette. It's long and lean, and completely covered up. But, it's still somehow really hot thanks to the slim, body conscious fit. That juxtaposition reminds me of labels like Roland Mouret or Victoria Beckham, both of which specialize in demure dresses that get all of their sex appeal from a slim fit and exquisite details. Before the holidays there was endless advice about setting a budget and sticking to a shopping list. Those who ignored the wisdom shared by experts will be in for a shock when credit card and bank statements arrive in the mail.

According to a Consumer Reports poll, six percent of us are still paying off holiday debts from 2010. That means any new purchases racked up over the past holiday season will inflate those interest charges and make paying down the old and new balances more difficult and expensive.

If the bottom line on your bills is looking ugly, it's time to get a financial-management makeover. Consider these tips for balancing your holiday debt:

1. Go On a No-spend Diet
Stick those credit cards in the freezer, if you have to, but do what it takes to avoid impulse shopping sprees. Better yet, give them to a trusted friend or family member for safekeeping.

2. Cut Back on Luxuries
You've had your fun during the holidays; now it's time to get serious. Cut out the restaurants, nail salon and triple shot mocha latte until the bills are under control. Of course, too strict of an economic diet is as easy to break as a weight-loss regimen. So figure in an occasional, small splurge to keep you going.

3. Double and Triple Up
Multiply your credit card minimum payments two or three times to reduce the amount of interest you'll end up paying. Merely meeting the minimum means you'll never see bottom.

4. Get Couponing
Using coupons for necessary purchases not only saves you money, but the practice helps you make more educated purchasing decisions. You can find online and printable coupons for thousands of stores on CouponSherpa.com, or download their mobile app for instant access to coupons while you shop.

5. Set Small Goals
Don't try to do everything at once. If paying off credit cards in three months means going hungry, you're biting off more than you can chew. Purple has not always sat well with me. I don't know why, but I tend to gear away from it all the time. I could count the clothes that I own with any hints of purple. I don't know if I associate it with Barney, but purple never grabbed me like other bright colors such as turquoise, yellow or emerald green. Although a jewel tone purple seems to always be the lesser in my book.

I dedicate this post to my best friend Stacy, who always had a deep love for the color purple. She sheds a new light on the color because she pairs it with wonderful combinations. Stacy's help, this months Allure magazine, and the limited purple pieces in my closet have proven to me that purple isn't necessarily the lesser of the jewel tones, but it is my least exposed. In my quest to open my mind to the seasons “it” jewel tone, I found some great finds and couldn't resist sharing.

I'm a big believer in kimono dresses because they're always appropriate to wear. Whether you are at an office dinner or a friend's birthday, you're always in style but conservative enough to be around your boss. I especially like this purple kimono dress because it makes me want to get creative with accessories. I envision it with bold gold and emerald looking accents to liven up the dress to its fullest potential. Dress it down with tall, flat boots or dress it up with heeled booties.

Dorothy knew what she was doing with those sparkly red shoes. Now it's time to pick up your pair and find your way to a happening party. Although glitzy dresses and tops are still popular this time of year, this year's trend emphasizes more Cinderella-like shoes instead of sparkly dresses or skirts. Although I usually pass on sequin dresses and skirts because the fabric can be itchy, sequin shoes are non-itchy so I will definitely be sassin' around in some sparkly shoes until the end of January. Whether you think you can pull off the sparkly look is not the question. Instead, ask yourself whether you dare to put them on? Once you put them on you will have trouble taking them off.

I've found that Bloomingdale's has an incredible selection of sparkly shoes that are irresistible. My first find is Kate Spade's sling back shoes. Kate Spade must have loved the Wizard of Oz because these sling-back glittery, charming shoes are a girly pair of uber decked out blingy shoes. The bow paired with this sparkly pair gives it an extra girly flair. I think this pair is adorable and would really be the accent piece to that simple black dress. The Holiday Season is here and while we are hoping to spread good cheer to others, we (at least I) would like to be fashionable while doing it. However, budget constraints could leave you deciding between that getting all the gifts on your list or having great outfits for your upcoming events.

So here are two tips, I would suggest before shopping for yourself this holiday so you aren't left unable to cross off all the names on your holiday shopping list:

Consider Versatility -- if you can take the item from day to night, it will give you more options for wear. Thus, maybe eliminating the need for buying two outfits -- work lunch and after 5 affair.
Shop Wisely -- all of the stores will have big sales but that doesn't mean you have to go for the high priced stores. I know in some way we rationalize the deal we get but if you can get the same 40% off on something that is $100 less, well...that makes sense.

I recently "rediscovered" Dress Barn and was excited to find quality, in-trend and budget friendly pieces that addressed both of my points. Americans are in love with both shopping and mobile devices, so naturally technology has helped us combine the two. According to a study by IBM Coremetrics, about 15 percent of American consumers who log into e-retail websites this month will do so using a smartphone, iPad, or other mobile device.

But that's just on the wireless end. IBM also found the number of consumers shopping online in November will increase 15 percent over the same time last year.

All that clicking and shipping means thieves will have more opportunities to steal your identity and your money. Fortunately, playing it safe isn't that difficult. Browse these nine tips to help you shop online without fear.

1. Opt for More Secure Payment Option
Federal law allows you to dispute credit card charges and unauthorized use. Many credit card issuers also offer "zero liability," which means you pay nothing if someone steals your information and uses it. As with credit cards, PayPal provides purchase protection in the form of $0 liability for unauthorized purchases. They also offer refunds for incorrect orders or items that never arrive and a process for resolving problems.

2. Use Security Software
Even if you don't shop or bank online, you should have security software installed on your computer. The big names in this area include Norton and McAfee, but there's also plenty of good shareware available. (See this cnet article for suggestions.) Make sure this software includes firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware capabilities.

3. Review All the Details
Did you use a coupon code? Then look to see if the savings was deducted at checkout. Same goes for free delivery. Avoid cookies by using such services as anonymizer.com to hide your identity or GuerrillaMail.com to create a temporary email address that lasts just 60 minutes. One hour is plenty of time to shop, checkout, and receive your confirmation email.

8. Use a Unique Password
It's hard to remember different passwords for each site, but you'll have less chance of identity theft if you switch it up. Don't use obvious information, like your address, phone number, birth date, initials or even your dog's name. Instead, choose a string of eight to 10 random numbers and letters for the highest security.

9. Fake Invoices

4 Fun Winter Handbag Trends

My last few posts have been about trends that are happening now. Little additions to the closet can make a major difference in your complete look. Today I want to showcase different handbags and clutches that represent this year's winter trends. Each bag is unique, but will dramatically change the look of an outfit with a glance.

I'd like to start off with a designer label that has been around since 1925. Personally, I think the simplicity of this particular designer has kept it popular throughout the years, with slight tweaks in their designs. I keep going back to Fendi as a buyer because it has proven to be durable. I literally spilled a whole can of Diet Coke in my favorite Fendi and the bag was unharmed. The bag that I am featuring is part of the season's hottest trends: animal print. The bag's top half is the Fendi logo and the slouchy body is a jaguar print. If you're looking for some guidance on how to best approach the shopping frenzy, use this list of Black Friday dos and don'ts.

DON'T

Don't Get Trampled
"Shop at your own risk" should be the official motto of Black Friday. Ever since a Wal-Mart employee was trampled in 2008, there's an added aura of risk. To counteract this kind of overwhelming rush, many merchants have announced plans to open their doors early. Both Target and Macy's will open at midnight, while Toys 'R Us plans to open at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Target also has a plan to cut down on the chaos by allowing only 30 shoppers to enter the store at a time.

Don't Drown in Numbers
Tags with multiple markdowns, added coupon savings and clearance items with an additional percentage off can confuse even the most brilliant mathematician after hours of deal hunting. Ask a sales associate to clarify any discriminating discounts and don't assume the final price until you crunch the numbers. Download the Sale Saver app which features a price calculator that factors in all discounts, including store-wide or product sales, along with coupon savings and any other promotional offers. The app saves items in the mobile cart and calculates the total savings, while factoring in tax to show just how much each Black Friday deal costs.

Don't Give Up
If you missed the door-busting deals you had your eye on, don't fret; there are still plenty of opportunities (in some cases, better opportunities) to find huge discounts after the shopping extravaganza ends. In 2010, Black Friday only had $648 million in sales, placing it third among shopping holidays. Both Cyber Monday and Free Shipping Day easily surpassed those sales numbers by a few hundred-million dollars. This shows an increasing trend in shoppers avoiding the post-Thanksgiving hysteria.

Don't Forget the Small Stores
If you took one pass by the parking lot and decided Black Friday isn't for you, there are still plenty of local stores with special offers and smaller crowds. Since these merchants can't afford to offer the same blowout prices as major chains, they'll often sponsor Black Friday drawings for gift certificates and other prizes. Shopping at these stores is a great way to support the local economy and find thoughtful presents without an "i" prefix.

Don't Spend Unnecessarily
There are plenty of great deals to be found on Black Friday, but there are also lots of duds. Remember, just because the price has been slashed doesn't mean you're getting a steal. Many merchants offering deals are beginning to cave in a similar fashion. Both Amazon and Target already have pages on their websites dedicated to Black Friday specials. Studying their offers well in advance will only make your plan more effective and keep you in the loop about last-minute changes.

Do Look for Coupons
Clearly, Black Friday deals are so good there's no possible way you could save more -- right? Wrong. There are a surprising number of merchants who offer coupons for additional discounts. Consult this list of merchants offering coupon codes for free shipping on Black Friday.

Do Strategize
A well-thought-out shopping strategy is essential for tackling Black Friday deals. Review store circulars ahead of time and pick destinations based on discounts. Review: Burberry Body Fragrance

I'm always intrigued when iconic brands come out with new fragrances. It must be a tough job to be the person charged with coming up with the new scent. How do you embody an already well-known look and feel in a perfume? The latest fragrance from Burberry – Burberry Body – brings to mind these questions. The refined, yet relaxed luxury of a timeless Burberry trench is such a distinct feel, I wondered how this new scent might stack up against the Burberry "feeling" that's already ingrained in my memory.

Truthfully, it does a pretty great job. I got a chance to try the new Burberry Body scent last week. When I first applied the scent, I found it to be a little powdery and soft for my taste. But, it didn't take long for the fragrance to transform into a very likeable scent. The lingering fragrance is warm and rich, but not overpowering, with a slight hint of vanilla. It has some floral notes, but definitely doesn't register to me as a true floral scent, and comes across very clean. It's not one of those rich scents that starts to give you a headache after a while – it wears well without coming on too strong.

On the whole, this fragrance made me feel warm and relaxed. It conveyed the subtle, casual luxury I've come to expect from the Burberry label. It's definitely a great special occasion fragrance. The warmth is perfect for a night out or a holiday party. But, it's also one of those scents that is comforting for the cooler winter months. It makes me want to curl up in yards of cashmere, right in front of a roaring fire. I think it would be an ideal holiday gift, or new scent for making the holiday party rounds.
