How To: Get Mad Men Hair Style

--By Kim Moshtaghi

Alterna CAVIAR Working Hair Spray
Alterna Caviar Hair Spray

$26.00
Available at: beauty.com icon

I’m so excited that season three of Mad Men is starting up. Whether you like the plot line, or not, the fashionable looks on the show are to die for! August 16th the show will be starting off strong on AMC, and there will be some great upcoming trends. There are some things in the fashion and beauty world that will never leave us, and continue to make us feel empowered and dignified, and that’s the best kind of fashion, hence why it’s still persisting. With hip hugging and waist accentuating clothing, the ‘50s took the shape of women and turned it into a sexy, sleek look.

But, what seems to be more consistent through both seasons 1 and 2 is the ‘50s Mad Men hair-do. Whether up, curly and down, or bouffant style, the ladies of the show have never had a bad hair day. Gloria Ponce, the hair stylist for the show, has done her research when it comes to ‘50s and ‘60s hair-dos. She’s never missed the mark once! Today’s modern women can take note of her hair masterpieces, and continue the trend at home. With 3 key items, the ‘50s hair-do can be yours in less than 30 minutes.

To get Betty’s down do, and Joan’s office ready up-do, you want to invest in miracle working hot rollers. The Infiniti by Conair Tourmaline Ceramic Flocked Rollers are a hit! According to reviews and friends who curl their hair as a second nature, this set is the Rolls Royce of heating hair curler sets. The Tourmaline ceramic curlers help smooth the cuticle layer, giving your hair an extra shiny performance. These curlers work their magic by evenly distributing the heat, with a quick and easy 2 minute heat up! For different hair types, and pure convenience reasons, there is a 12-temperature setting on these curlers. I couldn’t ask for an easier to use result-oriented curler! Click and buy ladies. Click it in your hair and you will look fabulous! It’s worth it!

After the heat has worn off, and the curlers are taken out, it’s time to insure maximum curl time. Now, that’s where shine sprays come in. My ultimate hair shine spray is by Alterna. This Alterna Caviar Working Hair Spray is ultra dry, but flexible enough to hold the hair. The spray actually helps enhance the strength and elasticity of the hair, while simultaneously stimulating protein and instant vibrancy. Now that’s a product worth spraying all over the people you love. They won’t take offense; it’s for a good cause, as hair usually is. Personally, I love the fact that the Alterna Caviar shine spray doesn’t feel heavy on the scalp, and refrains from leaving gross residue all over the scalp. No lice look-a likes for me!

After a nice curl job, and shiny hairspray to keep them intact, the next step would be the actual needle to the hammer. So, next up are the simplest, purest form of an up-do: Bobbi pins. I always have 6-8 packs of Bobbi pins handy, not because I need that many, but because you never know how many friends need them, and how many you loose along the way. So, be prepared for the scenarios, and buy yourself 60 Vidal Sassoon Bobbi Pins for $1.29! They are like the little friend everyone underestimates. Without Bobbi pins Mad Men wouldn’t accomplish such sophisticated, perfect dos. Bobbi pins piece things together, and hide the pieces we wish not to divulge, because to an outsider it must look perfectly smooth and in order! That’s what ‘50s hair, and elegance is, and was all about! Faking the funk, and pulling it off with attitude!

How To: Inexpensive At Home Facial

--By Kim Moshtaghi

Conair Facial Sauna System
Conair Facial Sauna

$25.99
Available at: target.com

Keeping your skin radiant is important… especially if you want to look 20 instead of 50. There is the obvious way to prevent your skin from getting damaged and drastically aging: drinking a lot of water, staying out of the sun, eating well and getting sufficient rest. But, in order to fight the skin battle with full force, there are a couple products that are useful to have.

I think everyone likes the way their skin feels after a 10 minute sauna session, but it's not always practical and convenient to get to one. The Conair Facial Sauna System is a compact sauna you can take anywhere. It's a small feather-light mister that will open up your pores in order to perfectly clean and freshen the skin. The moisturizing mister includes a facial tool with two attachments: a rotating brush to exfoliate the skin and a sponge to apply moisturizer. The attachments don't necessarily need to be used, but they are nice to have just in case. The little sauna system is a quick and efficient way to open the pores, and get the skin prepped for an at-home mini facial. Its nice to save $100, and avoid leaving home.

Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque
Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque

$3.99
Available at: drugstore.com icon

The sauna system will freshen up the skin, making it super smooth. To take full advantage of your refreshed skin, it's a smart idea to apply a mask on the face and neck. An amazing and affordable one is the Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque. This mask helps dry up acne and rinse away the dead skin, resulting in tighter, smaller pored looking skin. Being mint, the mask will also smell and feel very refreshing.

For those of you who require, or are looking for, a daily skin routine I recommend the great working Neutrogena Complete Acne Therapy System. The pack comes with three tubes of skin treatment. One of them is an oil-free day lotion, the second tube is a skin polishing cleanser that contains Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide, and the last product is a miracle-working skin therapy package for night time. All three products are there to help with any skin blemishes, and will show results after four days of usage. If you order soon there is a $5 off promo code offer (use promo code NTRGDSCT).

You can get shiny healthy skin without emptying your wallet!

Conair Asks "How Do You Reel It In?" - Hot Contest

--By Jules Newmark

So today I went swimming as per my usual triathlon training, something I of course never really talk about here in the world of shopping bags and beauty, but there it is, I'm an amateur triathlete. So as far as training goes - my hair takes a beating between the chlorine, the helmet hair and of course the constant washing and pulling out of ponytails. I've tried all the products I can find to deep condition and make my hair look like the Pantene commercial... and this morning's attempt with a hair mask left much to talk about with you beauty-obsessed readers, let me tell you.

I mention this hair horror story in accordance with Conair's new promotion for their newest dryer - the Infiniti Conair Cord Keeper - which through Brickfish is promoting a contest by sharing your worst (or best of course) hair day pictures. The "How Do You Reel It In" campaign is promoting the new dryer to show how it could have saved them or maybe added to their gorgeous mop and offering prizes for the best entries. You can read all about this great opportunity to share as well as see hair nightmares at Brickfish.com/conair. The Grand Prize winner will become the "Ask the Expert" guest blogger on Conair.com and receive a $500 gift card and $300 Conair gift basket (I'm sure you'll receive the new fantastic Cord Keeper too...). Other prizes are awarded, so check it out.

This contest is interesting and so key for Conair as this creation of a mini social network is ranking entries based on how viral they are - in layman's terms, how much they've gotten around on the Internet and onto people's Twitters, IMs or personal blogs. So let's just say, I wish I would have had this blowdryer this morning with a hassle-free cord that I could just whip out at the gym to do a blow out before I realize that not all the hair mask had come out... My hair does look shiny - that's a positive... right?

SJ Road Test: Conair Infiniti Nano Silver Hair Straightener

Conair Ionic Nano Silver Tourmaline Ceramic Straightener
Conair Nano Silver Hair Straightener

$79.99
Available at: amazon.com

Have I ever mentioned that I'm insanely clumsy? No, not in the cute Fergie song kind of way. Nope, I'm clumsy in the run into walls, trip over my own feet kind of way. Needless to say, beauty rituals that involve extreme dexterity-- such as liquid eyeliner and flat ironing my own hair-- are a little beyond me. As a fan of the straight hair look, I do own a quite nice flat iron and use it on occasion, but it takes a lot of thought. I just can't get it to perform the way my stylist can, so I try to leave the molten-hot metal plate action in her capable hands.

Until this week. As part of my road test of the new Conair Silver Nano line of ionic/ ceramic/ tourmaline hair styling tools I was asked to take their hair straightener for a spin. It was bound to be interesting. Knowing that my rushed early morning routine was no place to attempt ironing my hair, I waited until the weekend and then packed up my new straightener and headed to my parents' house. I needed a guinea pig to help me warm up. I sat my mom-- and her two inch long curly hair-- down and set out to learn the ins and outs of my new toy.

My first revelation was that, unlike my own flat iron, the new Conair Nano straightener has incredibly easy to understand heat settings. My old flat iron forces me to choose a temperature between 250 and 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Nano Silver gave me a simple chart with four heat settings and the corresponding hair types for each setting, which range from "delicate, thin, easy to straighten" to "hard to straighten" with stops in between for treated hair and thick/ wavy hair. Also nice is the fact that Nano Silver comes with a heat-resistant carrying pouch and a fold away heat resistant mat to place your iron on while it is heating up. This was very convenient since I decided to give the iron a try in the dining room.

I set the iron to low to try on my mom's delicate, color treated hair. It heated up very quickly; I'd say less than 3 minutes. I was able to straighten my mom's entire head in under 10 minutes, and never once did the plates snag or catch in her hair. The process was so quick and easy that I was amazed: either I was a now a hair straightening genius or ironing someone else's hair is a whole lot easier than doing your own. I decided it was time to give it a try on myself. The results? Equally fabulous. I was able to iron my long, wavy hair on the lowest setting (to my complete amazement) and in just one pass per section. My hair was shiny, and straight, with minimal effort. I hereby crown the new Conair Nano Silver Straightener "clumsy-proof."

SJ Road Test: Conair Infiniti Nano Silver Hair Dryer

Inifiniti by Conair 228 Nano Silver Tourmaline Ceramic Styler
Conair Nano Silver Hair Dryer

$33.78 (was $49.99-- save 31%!)
Free Shipping
Available at: amazon.com

Let's get one thing out of the way: I'm a beauty product snob. One glaring example: I own a $200 hair dryer. It's a Bio Ionic, purchased at a time when the only ionic hair dryers on the market were pricey Japanese imports. It has lasted for years and I think it was worth every penny.

These days, ionic hair dryers can be picked up at your local Wal-Mart and we have new technologies to consider: ceramic, tourmaline, high wattage. I've been so confused that I haven't ventured beyond my trusty Bio Ionic. Then the nice people at Conair offered to let me try out their brand new Nano Silver hair care tool line. The Nano Silver line features all three of the new technologies-- ionic, ceramic, tourmaline-- wrapped into sleekly designed styling tools.

First up, the new Infiniti by Conair 228 Nano Silver Tourmaline Ceramic Styler. It's a fancy-schmancy hair dryer with a not-so-fancy price tag. I was dubious, given my love of high priced beauty products, but I've been using it for a week now and I'm impressed.

The basic hair dryer features 3 heat and 2 speed settings, as well as a cool shot button. It comes with three nifty attachments: a basic concentrator nozzle, an adjustable diffuser, and a pick. The dryer was great. It dried my hair as quickly as my Bio Ionic and with equally good anti-frizz results. Plus, it was actually a tad bit lighter than my old hair dryer-- a huge plus when attempting to straighten long hair.

While I was pleased with this hair dryer as a whole, I think the pick attachment (right) is worth the price of the entire dryer. It is the most freakishly amazing way to dry your hair-- and I mean that in a good way. The pick features two rows of comb-like fingers with a tourmaline-coated ceramic bar in the middle. As you use the pick, the bar heats up to aid in straightening your hair. What's freakish about it is that you really do have to rethink how you dry your hair. You have to switch up everything from the angle you hold your dryer to the pace of the drying process to use the pick, but it is worth the effort. My wavy hair straightened out quickly and painlessly without ever picking up a round brush. Ladies, if you straighten your hair, you have to try this attachment.
