Top 10 Colors for Spring 2010 Announced #NYFW

--By Jules Newmark

It's official ladies, the colors are out... for Spring 2010. Over here on the West Coast, it's nowhere near time to switch over to the fall wardrobe with temperatures still in the 80s, but of course, there's always looking ahead!

Every season there is an analysis put out of the top Pantone colors that were chosen by designers for their new collections. “The vibrancy of the top five colors [for women] — versus the neutrals we see toward the bottom of the ranking — show that designers are choosing optimism for the season,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, which disclosed the top 10 colors chosen by New York designers in the Pantone Fashion Color Report Spring 2010.

Pantone Fashion Color Report Spring 2010

With the recession still in effect, designers are still hunting for ways to make customers feel expensive for lower prices. The colors for next Spring definitely will add to wardrobe as we choose key pieces to spruce up our trendiness. What are the colors you ask? Well, let's start with the top color, Violet... purple is a power color after all. More colors going down the list of the percentage of designers who used the colors the most in their new collections are: Aurora (yellow), Turquoise, Fusion Coral, Tomato Puree, Tuscany, through Pink Champagne and Eucalyptus.

The bright colors will definitely be show stopping pieces I'm sure... I'm seeing myself in a turquoise fitted suit now... back to reality - head to WWD.com now to check out the Pantone colors for women and of course, see the menswear choices as well so you can be coordinated with your lover for Spring... nothing beats a picnic in style!

Challenge Stuart Weitzman & More at Fashion's Night Out #NYFW

--By Jules Newmark

It's official, fashion is attempting a global comeback during some of the toughest times the world has seen economically in over 50 years. Stores have been closing, sales are endless and it just seems like the regular luxury pieces just aren't the same. Well maybe they are, but designers just aren't showing off like they used to - who could afford it?

Vogue has spearheaded a global initiative called Fashion's Night Out. All around the world from NYC to France, Italy and Japan, fashion will be celebrated during parties and with stores staying open late to reignite the shopper in all of us. Who couldn't use a night out on the town to celebrate what we love the most? The event is on September 10th and New York has over 700 designers throwing events and parties as well as staying open late for shopping. Stuart Weitzman will be at both stores on Madison Ave and in Colombus Circle, returning from Spain as he has been designing the 2010 collection, to not only stand behind his brand and meet fans, but also to participate in his favorite sport - ping pong!

Please feel free to challenge Weitzman to a game, but before that, get there early and be sure to be one of the first 25 shoppers to make a purchase and get a pair of leopard rainboots as a free gift! The Vogue team has been busily helping to coordinate designer appearances and events around the world - Anna Wintour even appeared on Letterman to talk about Fashion's Night Out (of course with a mini plug for The September Issue). Check out FashionsNightOut.com and start planning your own mini fashion night out!

New & Hot: Patrick McMullan E-Invitations by Pingg

--By Jules Newmark

Patrick McMullan for Pingg
Champagne Glasses Invite

Free
Available at: pingg.com

Come one, come all to the next 50 parties I want to have because I just want to send out the chicest invitations I've ever seen. Forget spending $20 per invite on expensive dye cuts layered with silk, pearls and a big stamp that says "I'm dying to impress you!" This is a thing of the past.

Now, I'm wondering if sending a wedding invitation by email only would get people overly razzled and what about the parent's friends without email, but any other party for friends is just fine. Online invites are the way to go these days, from evite.com to pingg.com, everyone is using the free creative invites to see who is coming to your event and what they think about coming. Pingg.com just launched yet another designer series of invites just in time for NY Fashion Week by noted photographer Patrick McMullan.

McMullan is renowned for his take on fashion event photos and has shared his behind the scenes of fashion week in the invites! To see more of McMullan's work, visit his website, PatrickMcMullan.com. Cute shots of models heels standing around before a show, seats before they're even sat in and tons of other views the outsiders never get to see are the focus point of this invitation collection and are sure to be a popular set. Personally I LOVE the image of all the modern champagne glasses ready to be filled at an event - it just screams, "I'm dying to have a good time with you, please come to my party!" Enjoy!

Fashion Week: Mackage Goes Rock-Chic for Fall

--By Jules Newmark

With Spring almost here, I feel it's time to burst out with the spring pinks and greens -- there was just something about all the rain and gray days here in So Cal this winter that has caused me to pretty much fast forward mentally to nearly summer. So without further ado, we dress for Spring, then bikini for Summer and what do you know, it's already fall again. Designers know that they must get the best out for fall early so all buyers and trendsetters will include their pieces for that season as the must haves. I mean the magazines are surely well into summer issues and I'm sure with NY Fashion Week just finished up in February, fall coats and amazing outerwear are on the mind.

Mackage Fall 2009
So, while you're reading along in your sundress and espadrilles, check out Mackage's Fall/Winter 2009 collection, Mackage.com. The runway show at Bryant Park on February 18th featured coats for men and women with a glamorous rock and roll edge. Mackage is celebrating their 10 year anniversary designing, so why not rock out and celebrate with one of their fantastic high collared coats or a shiny zip-up jacket for a hipster day in Soho look you can wear in LA or Kansas City... think uber chic Kansas.

Erin Lucas, from the show The City on MTV was in attendance at the show, confirming that yes, everyone is looking forward to fall... already! Designers Elisa Dahan and Eran Elfassy of Mackage approach outerwear with the idea that it is a key part to being totally fashionable and not just another hoodie to throw on with jeans or oversized trench coat to keep off the rain - thank goodness for these saviors of season!

Mackage, being exclusively the only outerwear brand to show at NY Fashion Week this year, also contributes to the greater good! By hosting a coat drive with Housing Works in NYC, those who don't have that extra layer of warmth and fashion will be overwhelmed with all the coats New Yorkers were encouraged to drop off. Check out the celebrity donations of Mackage coats to Housing Works at ShopHousingWorks.com. With all this talk of fall, I'm off to warm up at the beach... you know it is only March.

Fashion Week: Badgley Mischka Launches Couture Fragrance #NYFW

--By Jules Newmark

Jules is live and on the scene, scouting select shows and parties at New York Fashion Week for Stiletto Jungle.

James Mischka and Mark Badgley have emphasized yet another integral part of their American couture dream of dressing women... a luxe fragrance called Badgley Mischka Couture. This golden gem shaped bottle with crystal look top is oh-so-luxury and makes every owner feel like a princess! "Our new fragrance, embodies our passion for making women feel beautiful," say the two designers.

When listening to them rave about their new creation during Fashion Week at the Red Door Spa by Elizabeth Arden on Fifth Ave, you could really see their vision to make a woman feel like she was slipping on a gown with each spritz of the scent. A blend of plum, jasmine, gardenia and musk, the fragrance is sexy, feminine and indulgent smelling.

Also with this fine creation comes a new and super chic addition for your purse. Try the Parfum Elixir going for $48.00... it's a gel form of the Couture that goes on smooth and leaves a nice after effect of moisture and beautiful smell! This team really knows how to brand a luxury item - they've been at it for 20 years! Anyone who's first words about couture and luxury that are "glamour and elegance" as Mark says and "comfort and ease" from James is my kind of design team... that's all for me - I'm out the door to buy some more Badgley Mischka Couture... parfum that is!

Fashion Week: Richie Rich is Funky Fun #NYFW

--By Jules Newmark

Jules is live and on the scene, scouting select shows and parties at New York Fashion Week for Stiletto Jungle.

Richie Rich Fall 2009
photo: teenvogue.com (full image)

Blondes have more fun! At least Richie Rich and Pamela Anderson did last night at his first show after departing from Heatherette, where he teamed with Traver Reins. While most shows start with a dj playing music and then models walking to the beat, this show in a ballroom at the classic Waldorf Astoria Hotel was a different showing altogether!

Starting off in a packed room of onlookers, Beth Sacks sang, a violinist performed, Kat Deluna did her thing and a wild ballet performance overtook the runway. This sort of over-the-top night is exactly what Rich is known for and his clothing designs weren't lacking in an ostentatious display either. The line is being marketed towards the junior market mostly and will be priced at more affordable rates such as $29.99!

Dresses in multiple designs, shorts and matching jacket/pant combos in loud colors floated down the funway for the night. The show was a mix of female and male models (tan and muscled none the less) followed by some socialites and celebs to top off the show. Model Caridee English, singer Aubrey O'Day (who just graced Playboy's cover), socialite Tinsley Mortimer, transsexual Amanda Lepore and lastly but not least, Pamela Anderson followed the models for a smashing show with a surprise to the end. Rich came out with a bang on his usual rollerskates to finish up a funky, yet youthful show. Also featured were the new line of Vans shoes Rich has helped to design for the Holiday 2009 collection. The old-world Waldorf was at first an odd place for this typical downtown designer, but after the run of the show, the glitz and glamour was the ideal touch to bring this collection to life.

Fashion Week: Vivienne Tam Pops With Color #NYFW

--By Jules Newmark

Jules is live and on the scene, scouting select shows and parties at New York Fashion Week for Stiletto Jungle.

Vivienne Tam Fall 2009
photo: coutorture.com (full gallery)

Short lines are my fav at fashion week - especially when you're waiting to get through the paparazzi and other fashion fans in the pouring rain... never good for silk, let me tell you! This year, Vivienne Tam brought to life a colorful collection with Asian influences perfectly infused, streamline dresses and top/skirt combos. Purple, red, black and green chic schemes go between silk silhouettes while the champagne floats around the room.

Blondes and brunettes are modeling the collection this evening, standing atop small blocks in perfect unison, never really moving a muscle... except for occasional sip of water and whisper. All models are showing off black tights with pointed shoes, which make for the perfect outfit. My favorite is a purple minidress covered in cutouts - it would be perfect for a hot date or impressive interview in the fashion industry - when in doubt - always choose stilettos! Purple is power and black fades into the fashionable background... hair is pulled back on models and short frocks rule the showroom.

Red is another pop color - she's not fading fast girls, don't you worry, a red lip isn't the only thing coming back! Fashion magazine editors Amy Astley and Katrina Szish were in attendance as well as plus size model Whitney from America's Next Top Model. All and all, this powerful collection is worth a whirl for your dressing options this fall! I never thought that Asian symbols could be translated into such beautiful graphic patterns as they were - seeing ancient text in modern day fabrics on waifish models was truly a global crossover.

Fashion Week: Victorya Hong, Project Runway Alum

--By Jules Newmark

Na Be by Victorya Hong - Spring 2009
Na•Be By Victorya Hong

Prices Vary
Available at:
multiple locations

Times are tough... can we hear it enough? Just when I don't think I can handle yet another person taking me down with negative recession talk, I think of glamour and beauty and remember it's just a high heel away or a chic clutch to being happy and rich in theory once again. Victorya Hong, Project Runway alum, must be feeling the same way because she stuck to her guns to show at Bryant Park (or at least across the street) and get her line out in the public eye... just like the good old days of... last year.

Designers are pairing up, showing together and working in teams to make their clothes a reality to buyers, editors and socialites. Hong's dreams of putting together runway magic were made true by Got2b hair company... a guardian angel of sorts. The two got together an put on a pre-fashion show show at Arena Event Space near Bryant Park where both introduced their new lines. Got2b's newest, Guardian Angel, is the co-star of the show this year with products such as a flat iron balm, blow dry lotion and curl iron spray.

As well as promoting fashion, Got2b donated money to the Global Angels Foundation which is a global charity that provides to children in need. Talk about a savior! Looks like this hair products brand is out to save the world... and the society of fashion of course. Check out Victorya Hong's contemporary womenswear line at VictoryaHong.com and Got2Be's Guardian Angel collection at Got2b.com.

Fashion Week Video: Happy 40th Ralph Lauren!

As we indulge in the waning days of New York Fashion Week, I think it's safe to take a little time out from the "new" and "hot" to wax poetic about the truly classic. What would American fashion be without Ralph Lauren?

Ralph Lauren isn't showy. Just like the man, the Ralph Lauren label is dapper, classic, timeless, handsome. We don't wait each season to see if the Ralph Lauren show will sink or swim. Nope. We just wait to see how much we're going to love it. I guess that's what happens with 40 years of practice.

Fashion week marked the 40th year of the Ralph Lauren label and the celebration kicked off with a black tie runway show at the posh Central Park Conservatory. Even with all of the pomp and circumstance, Ralph didn't disappoint. The collection is flawless. Inspired by a day at the races, the collection featured everything from jodhpurs to ladies day dresses to classic menswear inspired looks complete with top hats. With the possible exception of the crystal-studded jodhpurs, there isn't a thing on the runway I wouldn't wear. Love it. Check out the 40th Anniversary Ralph Lauren show highlights:

Fashion Week: Put Your Mini in Storage

There have been many studies that show that the hemlines presented during fashion week directly correlate to the state of the economy. Short skirts indicate prosperity is in the air; long skirts brace us for harder times. I hate to break it to you, but the knee-length skirt has been the preferred hemline of the Spring 2008 shows so far.

Bad news for investors, but good news for fashionistas. After a string of overexposed celebrities so long that we have actually become numb to the idea of pretty young things exposing their crotches to the world-- c'mon, try and tell me the whole naked Vanessa Hudgens thing made you pause for more than two seconds-- being demure actually feels fresh and exciting. The knee-length skirts that have been parading down the runway look sexy in that '40s pin-up kind of way. This is the kind of sexy that leaves 'em begging for more, not reaching for a cigarette. I think I'm going to like this.

Fashion Week Video: Color & Columns at Vera Wang

Color, columns, and draping, oh my! It's day three of New York Fashion Week and the look that will be spring is slowly unfolding before our eyes. As the days roll on, the marquee name designers come to the forefront and the giddy anticipation builds. Arguably the most anticipated show of the day was Vera Wang's 10 a.m. appointment with the runway.

Remember when "Vera Wang" meant wedding dresses for the east coast elite... and that's about it? So do I. Suddenly Ms. Wang is an unstoppable force of fashion with perfume, fine china & stemwear, lingerie, a capsule collection for Kohl's, ready-to-wear-- oh, and she still has plenty of wedding boutiques to fuel the fire that is her rapidly expanding empire. The Spring 2008 Vera Wang line was anything but wedding-y. Her inspiration: the Roman empire and their fascination with color and nature. Stunningly rich colors were layered onto softly draped columns of fabric with nary a bare thigh or revealing v-neck in sight. Such a relief after a week filled with overexposed young women in the news. My fave? The Kelly green floor-length stunner with the cream colored peekaboo mini-train. Watch for it as you view these highlights from the Vera Wang show with commentary from the designer herself.

Fashion Week: Bold Color Undercover

We're only two days into New York Fashion Week, but the Spring 2008 color palette seems to be taking shape nicely. Muted tones of grey, blush pink, beige, and clear yellow are the shades of choice. Just take a look at the BCBG or Lela Rose runways for proof of this precious spring color scheme. Our spring color story is set, right? Or is it...

On closer inspection there seems to be an undercover color trend slowly building. While the majority of shows showed a majority of their looks in the expected pale tones, patches of color did break through. Not enough in any one show to cause a stir, mind you. But, by examining the shows as a whole, it's easy to see that wide strokes of bright color across a neutral background is destined to be the underdog trend of the season. Don't put those bold colors away yet, ladies. I think spring has more in store for us than beige and blush.

Fashion Week Video: Lela Rose Goes Hepburn-esque

Ever wonder what would happen if you crossed sporty Kate Hepburn with demure, feminine Audrey Hepburn? Wonder no longer. According to designer Lela Rose, her Spring 2008 collection is Audrey meets Kate with a modern twist. Day two of New York Fashion Week kicked off this morning with the Lela Rose show where, like yesterday's BCBG show, the main attraction was breezy, beautiful dresses. So, where's our girl Kate among all of these dresses? The sporty touch turned up in casual anoraks and tailored, menswear-inspired shirtdresses. Check out this video for highlights from the Lela Rose show:

Fashion Week Video: The Girly-Girl is Back

After a fall's worth of severely cinched waists, deep jewel tones, and menswear-inspired plaids, spring will mark the return of graceful femininity... if Max Azria has his way. The celebrated French designer of BCBG showed early on the first day of New York Fashion Week, leaving many a fashionista wondering if his light-as-air dresses will set the tone for the rest of the Spring 2008 lines. Organza, silk, rayon, and linen swathed beauties sailed down the runway one after another like modern Degas ballerinas. There wasn't a hard line or a harsh color in sight and, in a fun twist, Azria proclaimed that his inspiration for the fresh color palette was to take the colors of makeup and translate them into fabric. Genius. Really.

Ready to be swept away by the return to a girly-girl aesthetic? Check out these highlights from the Spring 2008 BCBG Max Azria show, complete with commentary from the master himself:

New & Hot: Knox Handbags

Knox Roan Weekend Bag
Knox "Roan" Weekend Bag

$592.00
Available at: Chocosho.com

Shh, I've got the fashion equivalent of a hot stock tip: Knox Handbags. I know, you've probably never heard of Knox. Trust me, that's not going to last long.

Knox was founded just this year by Brooklyn-based designer Jessica Maxcy and the label is already getting a ton of attention in fashion circles. These soon-to-be talk of the town bags will even be showcased in the upcoming Gen Art "Fresh Faces of Fashion" Show at New York Spring Fashion Week, which is going down on September 5, 2007. I sense a sell-out coming.

Knox Phase 3 Shoulder Bag
Knox "Phase 3" Shoulder Bag

$458.00
Available at: Chocosho.com

Knox Handbags are crafted from sumptuous leather and brass parts that are custom-made by the designer's dad-- how cute is that? Jessica says, "These bags are designed with city living in mind, so they have lots of storage space and multiple pockets. The inspiration for the line comes from the shapes of space vehicles, ice crystals and other natural forms in space." She sounds like a famous designer already.

All of the handbags in the debut collection are stunning, but a couple of my personal favorites are pictured here. I'm particularly loving the Knox "Phase 3" Shoulder Bag (right). This oversized, cream-colored bag is glamorous, but not overdone. It is perfect for adding a pizzazz to jeans and a tee shirt.

Click on either photo to link directly to where you can purchase that Knox Handbag online, or visit the entire deubt collection of Knox handbags online at Chocosho.com. Fashion Week 2007: The Big Apple Goes Grape for Fall

It may be called "The Big Apple," but this week New York City was all about the grapes. As Mercedes Benz Fashion Week begins to wind down, one of the biggest trends this week has been the use of rich, exotic color to accent autumn neutrals. Over the past few days, the use of delicious shades of violet and plum has stood out as being particularly fresh and inviting.

If you are like most women, you don't own a stitch of purple clothing. Who can blame you? This notoriously hard to wear color has a bad rap as the favorite color of delightfully delirious old ladies thanks to Jenny Joseph's famous poem. In reality, shades of purple can actually be quite flattering and are especially well suited to woman with green and brown eyes. Ready to dip your toe into the world of purple clothing? Try out a shirt or peacoat in rich, dark plum. Set to jump in head first? A satin cocktail dress in shocking violet a la Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti is sure to turn heads. Any way you look at it, Fall 2007 is definitely grape season. Check out these hot purple looks from the runways:

Fashion Week 2007: The Sequined Mini Dress is "It" for Fall

Every season has it's "It" dress and "It" is what we will all be desperately searching for when that season's special occasion comes calling. For this Spring, it's the Little White Dress, and many of us are still searching for our perfect specimen. The "It" dress for Fall 2007 is still technically up for grabs-- Anna Wintour and her fellow editor-istas haven't made any grand proclamations as of yet. Be that as it may, as day five of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week comes to an end, I'm betting my money on the Sequined Mini Dress as Fall 2007's "It."

Why the Sequined Mini Dress? First of all, about 60% of the womenswear shows thus far have offered up at least one variation on the Sequined Mini Dress! How's that for agreement? Also, the variety of dresses shown really do offer something for everyone: high necklines and low necklines; bare legs and opaque tights; bright golds and mellow chocolate browns. Check out these super hot Sequined Mini Dresses from recent shows:
