New Balance 769 Running Shoe: Shop for a Cause

New Balance 769 Running Shoe
New Balance 769 Shoe

$99.95
Available at: nordstrom.com

What: New Balance 769 Running Shoe

Who Benefits: New Balance will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this shoe to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Why You Want It: Who doesn't need a new pair of exercise sneakers? Personally, I know mine are all thrashed, but I hate spending money on shoes that are solely for exercise purposes. Argh, I'd rather put the money towards new Loubies. Seems like such a waste to me. But, knowing that part of my money was going to a great cause would definitely make me feel a lot better about the whole thing. And, when it comes to finding running shoes that are a little more fashionista-friendly than most, you can't do much better than New Balance.

I don't know much about what makes one running shoe better than the other, so I'll just quote the NB folks... this "Lightweight mesh trainer offers optimal cushioning and moderate stability for a highly responsive ride. Lightning Dry lining helps keep feet cool and dry during long runs." Sounds quality. I'll bite.

FOUND: Workout Lingerie for Hot Summer Days

--By Jules Newmark

Fit2BMom Headband
Fit2BMom Headband

$8.00
Available at: fit2bmom.com

It's hot out. The kind of hot that makes you sweat even when you're not running outside, just walking out to your parking spot... it's that kind of hot for most of us in the US. So I'm thinking you might be running outside (not past 10 a.m., please!) and going to the gym midday... are you comfortable?

I think a workout is made so much easier with the proper wardrobe to workout longer and of course look good while you're doing it! Shapeez doesn't launch their new secret weapon until the middle of this next month, August, but they are coming out with "The Unbelieveabra Tankee", which is supposed to be the most heavenly sports bra solution ever created. I don't think that many are too amazing, so I'm ready for anything new. Most seem like just a giant piece of elastic smashing your boobs down to your body - not so pretty! This tank top like solution can go under clothes seeming like nothing is there without back closures and bands or just be used to work out for ultimate support and cooling with its moisture wicking fabric. I would pre-order this one, it's going to be a big hit! Prices range from $75 to $85 and it comes in nude and white, cropped and torso-length.

So that's your top, what about your bottoms? I think it's the worst trying to find a workout short that a thong can go under or shorts with built in underwear - always a nightmare! Affinitas Intimates has come up with a 90% cotton and 10% spandex thong that won't lead to chafing or moisture build-up during that 90-minute Bikram class. This basic thong is available at various boutiques and online web stores and is $12. Sometimes simple is the best way to go!

And please, be simple and pull your hair back to top off the appropriate gym/workout attire. I've seen so many women with their Rapunzel hair cascading down their backs while they sweat... be comfortable people! FIT2BMOM's Moisture-Wicking Headbands pull hair away from your gorgeous face while looking cute too. From now until August 10th, select styles will be on sale, so visit FIT2BMOM.com now while supplies last.

All in all, I think the beauty of working out these days is all the modern technology that lets you be super comfortable while getting a killer workout. So utilize new fabrics and simple fix-its, you'll burn more calories pushing it on the treadmill running than readjusting your wardrobe and trying to rearrange your perfectly coiffed curls!

$59.99
Available at: blissworld.com

Ahh, Summer. Dresses, skirts and shorts everywhere, tan bodies and, of course, fabulous flip flops. Living in Southern California, they might not be as special, but I remember when the warm days hit in NYC, they were everywhere! How could you resist, the wind in your... oh, sorry imagining a coastal convertible ride... but the sandal is amazing and worn all over the globe. Now why not experience your favorite warm weather shoe and get a workout at the same time?

FitFlop footwear is created to work your leg muscles when you're walking. This is not the newest cure to be cooler while running through Central Park, but better yet a comfortable flip flop that helps improve your posture and tones your lower half as though you went to the gym instead of walked around town getting your errands done. Creator Marcia Kilgore, of the infamous Bliss Spa, is busy selling tons of FitFlops-- 2 million pairs this year already! Celebrity fans include Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel-- both super fit ladies who sure look like they get a great workout... from a flip flop. These snazzy sandals can be purchased from places including Bliss of course and Macy's. Costs range on look from $49.99 to $59.99 and don't all look overly athletic - one design, namely the Electra, even has sequins! Go to FitFlop.com for more information and photos.

Review: Reebok EasyTone Sneakers, Part 3

Reebok EasyTone
Reebok EasyTone

$109.99
Available at: reebok.com

This entry is Part 3 of a multi-part review of Reebok's new EasyTone sneakers. Read Part 1 to learn more about the science behind EasyTone and my initial reactions to this new sneaker; Read Part 2 to learn about my experiences wearing EasyTone multiple times.

It's been a little over a month since I first strapped on my new Reebok EasyTone sneakers and I'm ready to deliver a verdict. I have to admit, I didn't get a chance to wear my EasyTone sneakers as much as I would have liked over the past month. The weather here in the Bay Area is notoriously unpredictable this time of year-- one weekend it was insanely hot, the next pouring rain-- so my weekend walks were on hold for a while. But, I still got in several long walks and a few shorter strolls.

So, do I now have instant thighs of steel? Of course not. But, I have do have the reasonable hope of more toned legs and a tighter behind in less time. That's saying a lot. The feeling of more engagement in my legs, thighs and butt while walking in Reebok's EasyTone sneakers was unmistakable and distinct. I know that my lower half was working harder with each step. And, because of that, I feel like it was well worth it to wear my EasyTone's in place of regular walking shoes.

At the end of the day, I'm glad I gave Reebok's EasyTone sneakers a try. Since my busy schedule and seemingly never ending days leave very little time for working out, I rely on my love of walking to keep me fit and healthy. EasyTone sneakers are an easy way to make the most of each step without adding anything difficult or time-consuming to my routine. I'll definitely keep using Reebok EasyTone sneakers each time I go walking-- now that I know they exist I'd feel like I was totally slacking if I went walking without them!

Review: Reebok EasyTone Sneakers, Part 2

Reebok EasyTone
Reebok EasyTone

$109.99
Available at: reebok.com

This entry is Part 2 of a multi-part review of Reebok's new EasyTone sneakers. Read Part 1 to learn more about the science behind EasyTone and my initial reactions to this new sneaker.

I’ve been wearing Reebok EasyTone sneakers for the past couple of weeks now-- mainly on my weekend walks around the neighborhood and when I run errands, such as trips to the grocery store or Target. While I initially felt that my legs were a little more tired after walking in EasyTone sneakers than normal athletic sneakers, I can now confirm that the feeling intensified with more wear. There is definitely something going on with these new Reeboks!

With regular use I have noticed that my legs, particularly my upper legs, get much more tired when walking in EasyTone sneakers. Not crazy, muscle-ache inducing tired, but clearly more of a “worn out” feeling than had I worn regular sneakers on my walk. I also noticed that it takes a little more effort to work up a steady pace while walking in EasyTone sneakers—my normal quick gait takes a little more out of me. I like it. I feel like I’m getting more done.

While I blame my tendencies toward horrible posture, not the shoe, I do notice that I tend to hunch forward a bit more after I’ve been walking for a while in my EasyTone sneakers. I feel like I hunch forward due to the fact that I’m working a bit harder with every step, kind of like a work horse hunching down to pull a load. But, when I caught myself and started to practice my super Pilates posture while walking, I could really feel my thigh and butt muscles engaged. I’ve decided that a conscientious application of my Pilates posture might yield even better results, so I’m determined to do just that from now on.

So far, each outing in my Reebok EasyTone sneakers has felt like it was giving my legs a little extra workout. I’m excited to see what I’ll be able to accomplish in the remaining couple of weeks in my Reebok EasyTone challenge. Stay tuned to find out how I do!

Review: Reebok EasyTone Sneakers, Part 1

Reebok EasyTone
Reebok EasyTone

$109.99
Available at: reebok.com

I wish I was motivated enough to work out everyday. Really, I do. When I can find the time to do something physical I feel great, but free time is nearly non-existent between my full-time job and owning my own business. My one saving grace is that I love to walk. If I’m heading someplace that’s within a couple of miles, I’d rather walk than drive—rare for a California girl. I enjoy parking in the farthest parking spot in the lot, just for the chance to get in a few extra paces. And on the weekends, I take long walks to clear out all of the cobwebs that accumulate in my head during the week. If not for my walking obsession, my body would be a big mess.

Given my love of walking, and totally inability to motivate enough to fit in any other form of exercise, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that I jumped at the chance to try out the new Reebok EasyTone sneakers. The idea of adding a special shoe to my already frequent walking in order to boost the effectiveness of each step was incredibly appealing.

EasyTone sneakers, which hit the market this year, incorporate “core” ball technology. This technology shifts air back and forth within the shoe each time you step creating instability (like the core train ball used in gym workouts) so your muscles get more of a leg-toning workout as you walk. Sounds fab, right? Here are the scientific specifics, straight from Reebok:

“EasyTone helps tone key leg muscles with every step. While wearing EasyTone shoes, a person will experience increased muscle activation* in her glutes (28%) and in key muscles in her hamstrings (11%) and calves (11%). (*Increased muscle activation up to 28% Gluteus Maximus, 11% Hamstrings, 11% calves. Based on tests comparing EasyTone Go Outside to a typical foam based walking shoe (Reebok Hex Express). Testing does not include EasyTone Flip.)”

I’m sure you’ve heard of similar products, which tend to be both pricey and not particularly aesthetically pleasing. But, Reebok EasyTone is a little different. EasyTone sneakers are designed to look just like regular athletic sneakers and are priced lower than the competition. The particular style I’m test driving is pictured here—the Reebok EasyTone in White/ Cucumber/ Champagne—and is currently available for just over $100.

Ok, so I started wearing my EasyTone sneakers a couple of weekends ago and have worn them several time since, including on a few of my fabulous 5-mile weekend strolls around my neighborhood. I was concerned that I might feel off balance or tipsy wearing EasyTone, but that’s not the case at all. The shoes did take a little while to get used to, but not in a bad way. They actually feel like they have extra padding under the foot—kind of like you took two or three gel shoe inserts and layered them inside your shoe. After I got adjusted to the extra springiness, I was off and walking. After one particularly long walk I did feel like my hamstrings were a bit more tired than normal, which makes me hopeful about the effectiveness of EasyTone and more willing to keep at it to see where this all goes.

I’ve been challenged to wear Reebok EasyTone sneakers for 30 days and report back, so stay tuned to hear more about my experiences with EasyTone!

Best Workout Clothes: Sneakers for Every Occasion

--By Kim Moshtaghi

Available at: zappos.com

With warm weather just around the corner, it’s time to throw away your old sneakers and replace them with a brand new pair. Sneaker shopping can be very overwhelming, but it needs to be done! With many choices in different sporting arenas it is easy to get discouraged… and get the wrong pair, making your whole body more achy than usual. Although I have found 3 sneakers that are great for walking, running and the gym, keep in mind that everyone has different arches and different feet. So, please remember this when making your purchase. I based my recommendations on stability, flexibility, whether the shoe is breathable and whether the shoe is lightweight.

The first pair of sneakers I recommend was also awarded best shoes by Shape Magazine in 2008. These Saucony ProGrid Ride sneakers are known to be very comfortable and have an excellent fit with maximum flexibility. I have narrow feet, so I’m not sure these would be the best for ladies with wide feet. But, the cushioning makes these shoes a great choice for avid walkers and people who jog a few days a week. I definitely wouldn’t recommend these for marathon runners, but rather for moderate exercising. The durability allows you to go far with no discomfort.

The next pair is also made by Saucony. These Grid Sinister sneakers didn’t win an award (yet), but I love the lightweight feel of these shoes and how the shoe naturally propels you onto the forefoot. This is a great jogging shoe. They have great cushioning and a great fit, which helps with stability during a jog. The soles are an extra perk for me, preventing me from slipping onto the rocks when I hike. Besides being a smart and dependable purchase, I love the looks and color options on these shoes. It’s always nice to get ready for a workout and like the gear you have on.

Lastly, I have found the perfect sneakers for runners. These Nikes have an awesome reputation when it comes to enhancing durability and spring. The Nike Shox Navina running shoes are known to be for people “who want to measure and monitor their progress toward their goals,” according to Nike’s site. The “shox” are a great cushion and impact protection from all surfaces, protecting not only your knees, but your whole body. These shoes are designed with highly resilient foam to be energy efficient and effective without draining with your knees with the extra impact, and have the cushioning to optimize comfort and your workout. The neatest thing about Nike’s website is that you can design your own shoes, and order them according to your foot type, which really personalizes them and gives you extra comfort.

I know I only covered general sneakers, and didn’t get into specific sports, but this should be enough for the average gal to get started on picking out a new pair of sneakers. When it comes to exercising there is limited advice I can give in one page. So, get yourself motivated and buy some new sneakers that fit your lifestyle and I’ll guarantee you will be one step closer to a better body!

Best Workout Clothes: Sports Bras for Every Workout

--By Kim Moshtaghi

Champion Shape T-Back Sports Bra
Champion Shape T-Back Sports Bra

$33.00
Available at: activasports.com

To add on to last week’s workout pants and shorts, I did some sports bras research. It is very important to wear the appropriate sports bra during specific workouts. So, in order to cover all bases you should buy a few diverse sports bras to wear during low, medium or high impact workouts. I have made the mistake of wearing high impact sports bras during my leisurely walks, and I was uncomfortable and felt slightly suffocated. It is important to have a specifically low impact sports bra in order to keep your breasts from bouncing all over the place, but you don’t need them as restrained when your walking as opposed to when you are kickboxing.

I found a great medium impact sports bra with a racer back. I prefer racer back sports bras because they are simple to put on and take off, unlike the sports bras you have to attach-- I like to put it on and head out. This particular Champion Shape T-Back Sports Bra has molded cups. So, you’ll be getting restrained, non-bouncy boobs that look good and evenly sized! This sports bra has awesome support; with a comfy silky smooth material and most importantly material that stays dry. According to the website where it’s sold, the Champion Shape T-Back is a high impact sports bra for ladies with size A and B cups, and for moderate impact exercises for ladies with C or D cups.

RRS Vitality Bra C/D
RRS Vitality Bra

$14.95 (was $29.99-- save 50%!)
Available at: activasports.com

This second sports bra is a more serious than the first. Meaning, it is for very high impact exercises. The CW-X Firm Support Bra sits higher on the chest, giving breasts more support. The back strap crossing system gives it a very firm support of the chest and back simultaneously. I would definitely recommend this for avid runners, or a strenuous activity. This will keep the breasts supported and will push them down a bit in order to not keep anything from coming in between you and your high impact workout.

Lastly, the RRS Vitality Bra is perfect for that leisurely walk you take with your dog, or when you attend yoga classes. I even wear this type of sports bra during my day off because of its amazing comfort. This is a medium support bra that is very light weight in order to keep it extra comfortable and making it easy to maneuver in. This is a great sports bra to have. Although it is low impact, it does absorb moisture quickly, keeping you dry.

Best Workout Clothes: Shorts & Pants

--By Kim Moshtaghi

Hardtail Rolldown Long Short
Hard Tail Rolldown Long Short

$32.00 (was $40-- save 20%!)
Available at: londomondo.com

The New Year has started out great, but I’m having some leftover holiday blues. Not only do I still get flashbacks of my ex, but my dates are getting worse. Not that I’m a serial dater, but I feel like the men I’m meeting are dumb and dumber. To continue my positive attitude and Zen peace of mind, I have incorporated more working out into my schedule in order to keep my head clear and positive.

Although I practice karate 3 to 4 times a week and I walk my dog everyday, I changed up my routine by hiking on a strenuous trail by the ocean in the mornings and doing more stretching and mediation before my day starts. These two slight changes have really helped me avoid the emotional phone conversations with my friends.

Hard Tail Dragon Rolldown Pant
Hard Tail Dragon Rolldown Pant

$64.00
Available at: londomondo.com

I have a long ways to go to reach complete inner peace, but I feel like I’m on the right track-- just trying not to slip and fall and keep it consistent. I know having 16 years of Karate experience is amazing and admirable, but from a fashion perspective it’s boring. I practice in my uniform (heavy weight, thick and shapeless) so I don’t get to show off my fun spunky style-- except in my karate techniques! So I’m happy to look better, work out harder and wear some cute stuff to help me feel beautiful and pumped up on my walks and at the local gym. With all that said, there are definitely a few different workout-appropriate bottoms I like wearing, depending on the weather and what work out I do.

These first bottoms are the Rolldown Long Shorts by Hard Tail. I love the cute sexy style Hard Tail incorporates in their clothing, but I typically like Hard Tail for lighter exercising. So, it is perfect for walking on a warm day, a light jog, or stretching. These Hard Tail shorts are easy to wash and can also simply be worn to prance around in and look cute. The best part is you can get a great base tan on your legs while exercising outdoors-- just don’t forget the sunscreen.

These Hard Tail Dragon Rolldown Pants are very comfortable and hot! The dragon on the bottom of the pants gives them an edgy fun-loving aura. These pants remain simple despite the dragon. Being black and white makes them less overwhelming. I like wearing these pants when I’m doing some gym exercises, a yoga class, abs, and walking with my dog. These yoga pants also come in handy when I want to go grocery shopping or run errands after some light exercising because their cute and wearable everywhere. These pants are hip and laid back-- a perfect way to start or end the day.

Champion Double Dry Women's Hot Shorts
Champion Double Dry Hot Shorts

$8.99 (was $19-- save 53%!)
Available at: championusa.com

Next up, I have Champion Double Dry Yoga Leggings. These would be great pants to run in and break a sweat in because of the quick moisture absorption they have. I also wear these when kicking and punching my punching bag. These are also great to wear during kickboxing and gym cycling classes. It’s a great feeling to feel the burn during a workout, but it’s even better when you’re dry. These are fitted tapered pants, but they do allow the freedom to move and allow you to be flexible. The special fabric finish also helps block harmful UV rays, which should always be a health concern-- glad they got that covered!

My last easy, wearable workout bottoms are Champion Double Dry Hot Shorts. These shorts are sturdier than the Hard Tail ones and can also withstand assertive strenuous exercising. These particular shorts have a wrap waist band as well, but with added color. Being flattering to one’s figure and soaking up the sweat before you feel it-- for $8.99 I’m sold!

I know there is more to sports and active wear than just bottoms, so stay tuned next week for sports bras and shoe recommendations. Till then, I’ll be working on my bod and my brain!

Everyone knows that high heels make a woman’s leg look its best. But who ever thought about working out in them? Summer Fitness Myths Dispelled

--By Jules Newmark

Have you been buying Shape, Self, Women’s Health and Fitness RX in hopes of magically taking those amazing cover bodies and making them your own? Well sorry ladies, that isn’t going to happen any time soon, but there are definitely a lot of tips and potential myths filling those pages that you are getting for your money.

Stacy Berman, Founder of Stacy’s Boot Camp in NYC, says “life begins where your boundaries end,” and that there aren’t necessarily shortcuts to getting the perfect physique. If one of these plans to loose 20 pounds in 5 weeks is sounding somehow miraculous and almost alien, that’s because it most likely is, as Berman would advise. She has compiled a list of fitness myths to help her boot campers, and potentially those gullible readers of the newsstand fit rags.
Oxygenfit - Lifestyle - Home - Travel - Fitness Products

One myth, “A 20 Minute Walk will Change Your Body Shape,” sounds really easy until she explains that this exercise is barely enough to get by if you’re looking to shed a few. Try dietary changes, weight lifting and intense cardio, then you can talk about changing the body’s shape – now that sounds like actual work!

Berman advises her boot campers to be aware of fad diets and exercise methods as escapes to the hard work really needed. She also debunks the myth of weightlifting raising resting metabolism, lifting heavy weights adds bulk and that specific exercises are good for spot reduction. Sounds like that meander through the mall in your Choos isn’t going to count for the calorie burning session of the day after all – suit up ladies and start sweating!

Sports Minded How-To: Personal Training On A Budget

Link to main program workout page
iTrain Online Program

$10.00/ mo.
Available at: itrain.com

We all know personal trainers are expensive, but we also all know how effective they can be (Gwen Stefani – baby weight, hello). So how does one manage to pitch for that hot little number from BCBG and still have the cash required to get the bod that will fit inside it? Having had all kinds of experiences with various fitness programs over the years, I can honestly say there is nothing like having a personal trainer. That being said, here are five ways you can cheat and still get something worthwhile enough to completely justify the money you will save, and then some.

1. Ask for a Less Experienced Trainer
Generally speaking, the longer a trainer has been around the higher their fee. If your goals are relatively simple (i.e. you’re not trying to lose 40 lbs. before a wedding in a month), there’s no reason not to go with a less experienced trainer. They might be green, but they also might run 50% or more LESS than the most experienced staff.

2. Semi-Private Sessions
Look for trainers who will double up clients (2-3, more than 3 is probably too many) at a reduced price and you and a friend can save 50% or more off what might be the training rate at a gym. Many smaller gyms offer semi-private sessions, the rate for a half hour session at the Yoga Den (Corona, CA) for instance, is more than 60% less than the rate I paid at my gym.

3. YMCA “Coach Approach”
In this program, you have an initial assessment with a trainer/coach where you set goals and develop a workout program. This is put into a tracking system and you work out on your own, logging in when you hit the gym. Regular meetings with your Coach let you assess your progress and change your program as necessary. The program is free for members, a Y membership generally runs about the same or slightly less than a health clubs’, with the added benefit of helping the community. Many branches of the YMCA offer the “Coach Approach,” find yours here (mine was Mission Valley, San Diego).

Shape Magazine
$15.97/ 12 mo.
Available at: Magazines.com

4. Online Fitness Community
Online fitness communities cost pennies compared to a trainer, if they cost anything at all, and are great if you can stay motivated and want a trainer primarily for the program they can put you on. They offer everything from downloadable trackers/planners, to discussion forums, to full-on tailored workouts complete with daily menus, schedules, and shopping lists. FitWatch.com and CorePerformance.com are a couple examples. FitWatch is free unless you want the Deluxe version, in which case you’ll have to fork over $5 per month. CorePerformance is geared more towards athletes, but they do have planning based on lifestyle goals (i.e. general fitness). They have a free three-week trial, a whole year will run you $80 (which might get you 2 sessions with a trainer... if you’re lucky and have a cheap trainer).

5. Fitness Magazines
Fitness magazines are putting a whole host of content on the web these days, most of it free and some of it on par with the online fitness community. Women’s Health, for instance, has a Fit Plan which is a free 6-month program you can join that will help you assess your fitness level and tailor a workout to improve performance. And both Women’s Health and Shape have a “Workout” section chock full of exercises to help you change up your routine or focus on that one body area that just drives you nuts, whichever the case may be.

Sports Minded Interview: Jackie Warner of Bravo's Work Out

Bravo TV's Jackie Warner
Jackie Warner

Beauty, brains, a six-pack any hot blooded male or female would kill for... Jackie Warner really does have it all. Her gym, "Sky Sports Spa," is widely recognized as one of the top gyms in Beverly Hills. Her show, "Work Out," was recently picked up for its second season on Bravo. She's releasing her own line of clothing soon, AND she's found a way to combat hidden calories with Aquafina’s newest product, "Aquafina Alive." I recently got to chat with Jackie about it all, here’s what she had to say about water, weights, and what to wear in the gym.

Do you find that hidden calories are the biggest challenge in trying to maintain a healthy and balanced diet for your clients?

Yeah, you know they really are. We have so many choices on the market today, consumers have to be very savvy and really read labels. Water is one of the biggest culprits, it’s surprising how high in sugar some of the beverages are. Vitamin Water for instance, which is one of the most popular products on the market right now, has around 30 grams of sugar in it! So I was surprised how low in sugar Aquafina is, it really is a go to.

What is your favorite flavor of Aquafina Alive?

The peach. I’ve been drinking it all morning. All the flavors are good, but yeah, my favorite is the peach. It’s also nice because we have our clients drink 3 liters of water a day and this is difficult. So it’s good to have something flavored for them because they like having something to switch it up to.

Aquafina Alive
NEW Aquafina Alive

Obviously as a Professional Trainer with high profile clientele you have to be pretty disciplined in your own fitness/diet routine, but do you have any guilty pleasures you can share with us?

Ha ha ha! Absolutely! I have so many! Actually the philosophy we use, and have our clients go by, is that Monday through Friday you eat a very clean diet infused with nutrients. Saturday, you get a cheat meal: you eat the things you’ve been craving all week. Social drinking, for instance: you be really good all day Saturday, do your work out, and then you can have those martinis that night. It’s all about checks and balances.

What is your number one tip for clients who have plateaued or are struggling with motivation?

There is only one solution when a client plateaus: change the workout plan or routine. The trainer looks at everything, diet and forms of exercise, and will make changes to both. They may, for instance, add something like kick-boxing to the client’s plan. You also need to continuously raise resistance in your weight routine. If you’re not sore after, you’re not working.

Since this is a shopping blog, we’d like to ask: Where do you shop for your workout wear?

I make my own. I mean, I shop where everyone else shops: Barney’s or Bloomingdales or whatever. But for work-out stuff, really, I make my own.

Yeah, we noticed that you’re releasing your own clothing line soon, can you tell us more?

Well, I’ve really changed gears. I’m moving away from the lycra and yoga pants and toward a softer cotton look, sort of an Abercrombie feel, and the line reflects that. It has a sort of rock/punk edge that I like. It’s just more me.

So what is the release date for your clothing line?

It starts being available for my staff and on the show around October 6, we hope it will be publicly available in January.

Any last tips for our readers?

Be careful with the fat free stuff because a lot of it is really high in sugar. You can use sugar substitutes, but don’t over do it with these either. You know, don’t sprinkle it all over your salad or anything. Just one packet in a cup of coffee in the morning is fine, but take everything in moderation. This really is the key: everything in moderation.

Definitely some great tips in there, wouldn’t you say? Can’t wait to follow up on that clothing line! So stay “tuned” and I’ll be sure to tell you all about it! Enjoy this post? If you’ve never heard of Lucy, please let me introduce you to one of my favorite athletic apparel stores at an incredible discount. It's Week 3: San Diego loses (again!?!?), Philly destroys Detroit, and the Dallas-Chicago game might be the best game of the week for the first time in decades. Sundays between August and January mean thousands of men and women across the country are watching the NFL. I grew up in Denver, where Bronco-mania is a way of life, and fondly recall an endless series of parties and potlucks focused around football.

I've learned there are essentially two obstacles for the female football fan. The first is getting the guys to believe that you do really know what the "Nickel Package" is and how to use it. The second is dressing for the game. With the choices available, one usually ends up either wearing a tent (ahem, jersey), looking like they got attacked by the Powder-Pink Fairy somewhere en route to the sports bar, or dressing in a manner which will negate any and all progress made on obstacle number one.

Retro Sport - Women's San Diego Chargers Tee
Retro Sport Chargers Tee

$48.00
Available at: 80spurple.com

This is something of an issue across the board for female fans; NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB or otherwise. It's slowly starting to change though. Teams are now offering jerseys sized for women and you can find fashionable choices for the female fan popping up all over the place. One particularly exciting development is the line "Touch by Alyssa Milano." Currently focused on baseball and the Dodgers in particular (Alyssa's a huge fan), Touch is slowly revolutionizing sports attire for women... and it looks like Alyssa might be branching into other sports! Yay!

Sports Minded: "F" is for Frugal Fitness Fashion

HURLEY GIRLS TANK TOPS MAVERICK STRIPE
Hurley "Maverick Stripe" Tank

$9.99 (was $24.50-- save 59%!)
Available at: PacSun.com

I was recently discussing what to wear to a '50s themed wedding reception (yeah, I don't know... tradition with a twist) with my "date"-- a guy I’ve known so long he's practically family; basically I'm invited so I can give him tips on how to hit on the bridesmaids. He told me that he couldn't just wear a suit because the suits in the '50s were so similar to suits today that the average person wouldn't notice the difference. I realized something. I think it might be nice to have that kind of timelessness to your wardrobe. It would certainly be cheaper in any case.

Since men can mostly count on their clothing staying in style, many men do not approach clothing shopping the same way as women do. Buying a dress, for instance, is never just buying a dress. A woman also has to consider all of the other things that go with it: shoes, jewelry, underwear, bag, hairstyle... how close to an appointment with her esthetician this soiree happens to be. Since she is now spending a small fortune, she will probably also take into account any other impending events which will require her to face the buying a dress routine again.

FULL TILT Womens Pin-Dot Tank - Teal/White
Full Tilt "Pin-Dot" Tank

$6.97 (was $11.99-- save 42%!)
Available at: Tillys.com

The wedding reception in November is for the Maid-of-Honor from Saturday's wedding, and seeing the same people = new outfit. Halloween costume has to be ordered by October 5 in case it has to be returned, altered, or accessorized. Oh, and then it's the holidays and never mind that she has to do something about finding more gym socks so she's not doing laundry every other day...

Ultimately what this means-- besides that men are justified in thinking women are neurotic when we shop-- is that, unless you have a bottomless wallet, you will be looking for places to cut on wardrobe costs at some point. There is actually an easy way to do this with your gym clothing.

PAUL FRANK Samurai Julius Womens Tee - Pink
Paul Frank "Samurai Julius" Tee

$12.97 (was $19.99-- save 35%!)
Available at: Tillys.com

This is, after all, clothing that you know is going to be soaked in sweat, covered in dirt, stretched/ pulled/ ripped, and whatever else as you put it through the paces of your workout. Why spend a lot here when you can spend a lot there?

So how can you skimp and still look hot on the weight room floor? One great way is sale shopping at boardshops. It’s hard to get any trendier, it's easy to find interesting cuts and bold prints to break you out of that block-color rut, AND you can usually find great pieces for around $10 a pop. Count me in!

Click on any photo to link directly to where you can purchase that great find online. Get classic fashion finds delivered right to your inbox. Subscribe to Stiletto Jungle and get free updates by e-mail or RSS.
