How To: Buy and Apply False Eyelashes

--By Kim Moshtaghi

Sephora Flirt-It Lash Duo - False Eyelashes
Sephora Flirt-It Lash Duo

$8.00
Available at: sephora.com

Eyes are windows to the soul, and when lashes are defined and thick, everyone will want to get to know your soul… unless you are Buddhist, because they do not believe in a soul. But, they may secretly wish they had your lashes. False eyelashes have always seemed like such a pain in the butt to me, until this past Saturday. I had to liven up my look and I did just that with some stunning false lashes. They didn’t look fake on me, but they were very impressive and had people wondering.

Some of you may share my old fears. You too might get anxiety about putting on the lashes and worry about them coming off during dinner or dancing. That wouldn’t be nice, and rather embarrassing. I remember when I was 16 and thought it would be cool to wear false eyelashes to a party, until I was talking to my crush and he realized that I had half my false lashes stuck to the crease of my eyelid. I was horrified! I was so traumatized by the experience that I gave up false lashes for 9 years. Anyway, that won’t happen to you, I promise. I’m going to give a few instructions that will help you put on lashes without fear, and help you find the perfect pair of lashes to make you look gorgeous.

First you want to measure the false lashes to your natural lashes and cut them shorter with small scissors if they are too wide. Next, you want to take the lashes and place a thin layer of glue on with a toothpick, wait 20 seconds, and take the lashes with your two index fingers or tweezers and place them on your natural lash line in order to have them look natural and stay on. Use your index fingers to put the lashes on, position them, and let the two corners of your eye help guide you. Press down with your fingers once you have the lashes in the proper position. If not, move them to get them in the correct spot and directly on your natural lash line. Don’t hesitate if you mess up, just take them off and re-do it. Practice makes perfect.

Now let’s move along and go over some sexy, classy and sparkly false lashes that are worth buying and trying! My first pick is the Flirt-It Lash Duo from Sephora. This is a diverse kit with two kinds of lashes: half lash strips and full lash strips. This is great because you get to use the half strips for the outer corner of the eye, for that sexy vamp look without being too dramatic. The full strip will be more of a statement. Your choice whether you want to create a softer or sexy fluttery look. Both are needed, that’s why this combination is perfect to have around.

Next, is a sexy pair of Sonia Kashuk dark lashes. These Sonia Kashuk Full Glam Eye Lashes are dark lashes that will add a lot of volume and body for those who are yearning for sexy, full exotic lashes that they can bat on a dinner date. They’re simply stunning!

Just for fun and spunk, I like these Xtended Beauty Dazzler Strip Lashes. They are sparkly, long, and full bodied dark lashes that will turn heads. I like how the sparkles are dispersed randomly-- giving the lashes a mystical look. Great for a girl’s night out! Xtended dazzler eyelashes will add fun and glitz to an evening.

Review: Lash Food Eyelash Conditioner & Stimulant

--By Pearl C.

Lash Food Eyelash Conditioner and Stimulant
Lash Food Eyelash Conditioner

$120.00
Available at: lashfood.com

I was so stoked when I found out I would be reviewing Lash Food eyelash conditioner. I have been interested in lash lengthening products for a while now, but have never been able to bring myself to buy them-- most of the ones that work are on the pricey end.

So I tested the Lash Food natural eyelash conditioner, which boasts stunning results in 2-4 weeks with thicker, darker and longer lashes. Basically, the product looks like a mascara tube, and comes with a thin liner brush. You line the base of your lashes with the wand, and you can also use along your eyebrow line.

I have to mention that I’m a total cynic and don’t expect a lot of these products to work. I tried the product on both my lashes and brows, and to cut to the chase, IT WORKED! I only used the product day and night for 2 weeks, but my lashes are definitely longer and a bit thicker! It was super easy to use, and I’d highly recommend this product for people who want fast results. I also tend to have extremely sensitive and dry eyes, and Lash Food didn’t bother my eyes in the least.

I only noticed a couple drawbacks, such as when you put on liquid liner or line your lid with a pencil the product tends to dilute your makeup line. So I’d just take off the conditioner and add your liner, or maybe just use the conditioner at night. Also, the product happens to be pretty pricey at $120 a bottle, but this should last you 5 months of day/night use per the website. I think I’d be sold if it were a little cheaper, because this product REALLY does work. Perfect for us ladies born with wimpy lashes!

New & Hot: The Upgraded Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler
Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler
icon$18.00
Available at: Nordstrom.com

Can you really improve on the best there is? Shu Uemura seems to think so.

Shu Uemura has taken their iconic Eyelash Curler-- widely regarded as the best eyelash curler available-- and attempted to improve upon the original design. Nothing crazy, mind you. According to the company, the silicone pad has been redesigned into a "mushroom" shape to better grip lashes and produce a better curl. Also, they have upgraded the hinge to optimize the pressure produced by the curler. This new, redesigned version of the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler has just hit the shelves at select retailers.

So, did Shu Uemura really manage to improve upon the best there is? I guess we'll just have to try it out and see. If you give it a try, leave a comment and let us all know what you think.

Girl Talk: Lush Lash Secrets

If eyes are the windows to the soul, does that mean that lashes are the curtains of your inner essence? Ok, maybe that's a little overdramatic, but you see where I'm going. Long, luscious eyelashes make you look awake even when you're not, show off your pretty peepers, and serve as one seriously effective flirtation tool. Is it any wonder that women spend so much time and money making their lashes just right? Or that so few women are forthcoming with their lash improvement routines? Hmm...

Dior Diorshow Mascara

$23.00
Available at: Amazon.com

Luckily I know a few women who are ready and willing to share their best beauty secrets. I called in the Stiletto Jungle Girl Talk panel to dish on how they get their lashes in top form. So, ladies, what are your lush lash secrets?

"One word: Dior," says Michelle, a 40-year-old Huntington Beach nurse. "I hate to admit the [amount of] money I've spent on mascaras I've thrown in the trash after one use. Then I decided to spluge and try Dior Diorshow Mascara (photo left) and I fell in love. No clumps; no smduges half way through the day. It is so worth the money!"

A product endorsement that enthusiastic is powerful, but it is made even harder to ignore when it is backed up by a second endorsement. Dior's Diorshow Mascara is also a favorite of Girl Talk panelist Pearl.

"I don't usually go all out with my lashes, but I never, ever leave my home without curling my lashes," offers Pearl, a 28-year-old LA-based music industry coordinator. "I've learned that [curled lashes] make me look more awake as well as compliment the length, so I use my Shu Uemura eyelash curler (photo right). That's usually all I use, but on the random occassion I decide to whip out the mascara, I use Dior's Diorshow Mascara. To keep the clumps away, you can always use an eyelash comb. Sephora makes a great one."

Wait, you go mascara-free most days? I don't believe it. Your lashes always look so plush. Any other secrets you'd like to confess?

"I usually do a nightly mask of the Oil Cleansing Method Method (OCM Method) when my face is dry. It's a mixture of castor oil, tea tree oil, almond oil, and grapeseed oil. I usually condition my lashes with the mixture as well as the rest of my face-- leave on for 2 minutes, then wash off before bed," offers Pearl.

It just as much about technique as product for Kim, a 23-year-old from La Jolla, California. "I swear by Fresh Supernova Mascara... But, in order to bring about Fresh's ultimate potential, I always apply mascara last in order to have gained some volume from my eyeshadow when it sits itself on my eyelashes [after application]," says Kim. "When I'm going out to a super important function I always apply two different kinds of mascara. I apply L'oreal Voluminous Mascara-- in black of course-- and then apply Fresh afterwards. The good thing about Fresh is that it doesn't dry as quick so you can reapply later, unlike other mascaras that dry up and you are unable to fix the clumpy look."

A special technique is also the secret weapon for Jennifer, a 31-year-old Long Beach nurse. "I prefer the cheap mascara in the pink bottle with the green top, in black. I am not sure what the name of it is," offers Jennifer.

Vaseline Petroleum Jelly
Vaseline Petroleum Jelly
$4.99
Available at: Amazon.com

It's one of the all-time classic makeup products, Jennifer: Maybelline Great Lash (photo above left)! You're in good company-- it's also the choice of more than a few big-name makeup artists.

"I always apply it to the bottom [in addition to the top lashes]," Jennifer continues. "Then I use the blow dryer to dry it and apply a second coat. I use a regular eyelash curler and curl at the base then the tips-- this adds more of a curl. Applied during the day it lasts all night."

Don't feel like throwing down $20 or more on mascara or working through an elaborate lash routine? "Random Chick" has a great tip up her sleeve.

"Yeah, my eyelash routine is pretty simple: one coat of black mascara and that's it," admits "Random Chick," a 31-year-old freelance writer. "I've never used curlers... they feel funny, look scary, and I don't think they make a big enough difference to make them worth it. So I just make my lashes long and pretty with Clinique Long Pretty Lashes Mascara, give a wide berth to anything that might cut or burn them, and yeah, that's pretty much it. I did find out recently that apparently there was a mascara shortage during WWII, so women would rub a tiny bit of Vaseline on their eye-lashes to make them them look darker and longer and shinier. Pretty handy tip if you're going somewhere you might not want to have mascara on, but still want to be cute. Like the beach. Also fortunate since my fave lip balm is Vaseline Lip Therapy: one product does two jobs so I'll have that much less with me, and I will never be that girl. You know, the one putting on make-up at the beach."

No, "Random Chick," you will never be that girl. You always have the best tips! I can remember my mom telling me the Vaseline trick when I was a teen, but I never knew the origin. I'm definitely resurrecting that one the next time I hit the beach.
