Spring Fashion Fling: 5 Trends to Try
There are so many distinctive trends for Spring that it's hard to know where to start when it comes to building an updated Spring wardrobe. It's also a little confusing, given that some trends seem to cancel one another out. Do you go pastel or super bright? Ruffles or utilitarian chic? Hobo or structured bag? What's a haute girl about town to do?
As we head into the Spring season everyone is still trying to guess which of forecasted trends will show actual staying power. Although they all sound like fun, only a handful of Spring's standout styles are really worth your hard earned dollars. These chic styles are supremely wearable, but suitably glamorous, and will see you through Spring and into Summer with style. It's time for a spring fashion fling!
Florals
Boden Riviera Dress
$98.00
Available at: bodenusa.com
Floral prints are everywhere for spring. This is definitely one of the most pervasive spring trends, but luckily it is also one of the most wearable. From super girly-girl florals, to more artistic takes on flowers, to florals with almost tomboy appeal, you can find a floral for any taste. This simple green floral Riviera Dress from Boden is tops on my list. It's chic and grown up, with a super flattering cut.
Exotic Skins
Christian Louboutin Python Pumps
$1195.00
Available at: saks.com
Given the dismal economic times, it would seem that there's no accounting for the popularity of pricey exotic skins. But, a second thought reveals exotic skins as a smart move. When times are tough, it makes perfect sense to invest in pieces that will stand the test of time. Exotic skins are never out of style. Whether you opt for luxe natural python-- like these luscious Christian Louboutin Python Pumps-- or an affordable little faux accessory, or something in between, exotic skin is a trend that's for real.
Cropped Trousers
Elizabeth and James "Kingstone" Trousers
$275.00
Available at: shopbop.com
After seasons and seasons of making sure that your trousers fell perfectly over the heel of your shoe, it does feel kind of odd to be flaunting a pant leg that hits at the ankle. But, after you get used to the silhouette, the cropped trouser is definitely one of the most enjoyable trends of the spring. The new shape-- fuller through the thigh, tapered at the ankle-- is a hard shape to embrace, but it creates a striking silhouette and shows off your shoes like nothing else. These luxe cropped trousers from Mary-Kate and Ashley's Elizabeth and James line are perfect for more casual occasions. For a work appropriate version, check out the new cropped trousers from Marc by Marc Jacobs or Paige Black Label.
Statement Necklaces
Gerard Yosca Drape Necklace
$370.00
Available at: maxandchloe.com
There's no faster way to perk up a tired fall outfit than by adding a dramatic statement necklace. This is the one accessory you absolutely must have for spring. Luckily, this is also the one trend where you can find truly standout pieces at all price points. This beautiful Gerard Yosca necklace would turn a powder blue button down work shirt into a date-worthy top. For more affordable options, check out the new Erickson Beamon for Target line or the necklace options available at Lulus.com.
Bright Colors
Diane von Furstenberg "Caroline" Cardigan
$385.00
Available at: nordstrom.com
Bright colors might be the most polarizing of all spring trends-- either people love the super brights, or they stay far away. I used to be in the far away camp, until I was gifted a bright pumpkin colored cashmere cardigan. I had no idea what I was missing! Bright color lifts your mood and draws the compliments. Here's a hint for doing it right: don't ignore your skin tone. Not all brights are created equal and not all brights will look good on all people. Take the time to try on a few shades before committing to a purchase.

Trend: Maxi Dresses for Day and Night
--By Kim Moshtaghi

Mossimo Maxi Dress
$22.99
Available at: target.com
I love the way it looks so dreamy and elegant, but it can be worn during the day and look stunning. I recently wore mine out shopping with some flip-flops and I felt like I was on vacation. Every time I see, or wear, a maxi dress my thoughts go drifting into fantasies of beautiful beach breezes and joyful walks along the beach on vacation. Or I envision myself having a margarita in Mexico. Additionally, I like the fact I can get a breeze by wearing the dress, but I don’t have to risk showing my parts, especially when it literally gets too breezy. Sorry Britney, the maxi dress wasn’t made for you!

ingwa; melero "Fina" Maxi Dress
$308.00
Free Shipping
Available at: shopbop.com
I found some great maxi dresses for you. I will only feature a few: a couple you can wear to lunch and one you may just want to grab a cocktail in, because you don’t want to go unseen.
I found a simple maxi dress from Target, and it’s the yellow that grabbed my eye. The dress has an empire waist and will look adorable on everyone, and for $22.99 how you could you go wrong? The color will really accentuate a summer tan, and the simplicity will go a long way, keeping it easy to accessorize.

Bebe Tiered Maxi Dress
$129.00
Available at: bebe.com
Lastly, I would like to feature a dress that’s just plain lovely. It can be worn during the day or night. In comparison to the other dresses featured it fits right in the middle. It needs some accessories to brighten it up, but the colors are what make it so flattering. The earth tones are elegant and really do a lot of people justice. The solid bodice makes it look really flattering on an athletic body, and creates an extra needed curve.
The maxi dress may not be accepted by everyone yet, but give it some time and people will come to understand the gracefulness of the maxi dress. In the meantime, keep your eyes out for one that flatters your body, with comfort in mind. Now imagine that you’re on a tropical getaway and just remember with the right maxi dress you may never have to leave your town to feel the ocean breeze.

Trend: Sunshine Yellow for Summer
--By Kim Moshtaghi
From old school Escada to today’s Versace, yellow has always been a fashionable color. The mere fact that yellow is bright and noticeable makes it a color worth incorporating into your closet. But yellow isn’t just a trend, it’s a mood booster for yourself and those around you. Warm and radiant like sunlight, yellow stimulates the brain, and wearing the right shade of yellow can make all the difference. Hint: stay away from fluorescent “highlighter yellow,” it’s rarely flattering. But overall, yellow is a warm and happy color that will make you feel confident, and get noticed in a positive way.
For some, wearing a yellow dress could feel too risky. For you ladies I have a couple accessories picks that will lift your mood without too much risk I found an adorable yellow ring that also fits perfectly with this season’s floral comeback. Although this ring is funky, I think it’s a great addition to any jewelry box and versatile enough to wear with many different outfits.

Trend: Collegiate Lingerie

Aerie Roller Derby Short
$19.50
Available at: ae.com
Lingerie lines like Pink by Victoria’s Secret and Aerie by American Eagle specialize in comfy cotton loungewear and undergarments emblazoned with faux university logos, made up sorority letters, and sticky sweet mascots of all varieties. These new “collegiate lingerie” lines are filled with pieces that somehow vibe both moderately modest and completely tarty at the same time. Staples include boyshorts, skimpy boxers, bare tanks, and sweatpants with a range of logos stamped across the rear view. Part borrowed from the boy toy and part standard-issue sorority pillow fight wear, these lines aim to depict a made-for-Hollywood college life that is far from my own university experience.

Pink Cotton Hipster
$7.50
Available at: victoriassecret.com
Now, before you go thinking that I’m here to bash collegiate lingerie, I’ll admit that I’ve totally fallen for this new trend. While the promise of an idealized college existence may be the selling point for the hordes of teens who are snapping up the hottest new offerings from Pink and Aerie, it’s the often unmentioned aspects of these new lines that have me besotted.
First, these all-cotton lingerie lines are crazy comfortable. Gone are itchy laces, less-than-breathable poly-satin blends, and revealing cuts that ride up into places that clothing just shouldn’t go. These new lingerie lines wear like most comfortable granny panties and oversized tees you own, but without sacrificing an ounce of femininity or sex appeal.
As if that wasn’t enough, collegiate lingerie is downright adorable, but just shy of being too girly to wear with a straight face. This past week I got a chance to preview the upcoming season of Aerie lingerie and there isn’t a thing in the line I wouldn’t wear. From sailor stripes to apple prints, tissue weight tanks to cozy sweats, boxers to bras, the line was just plain wearable. Comfortable, yet cute. Sexy, but without trying too hard. It’s easy to see why the collegiate lingerie trend keeps on growing. Check out a few of our favorite collegiate lingerie lines:
* Pink by Victoria’s Secret
* Aerie by American Eagle
* Jenni

Dolce Vita Open Toe Flat$110.00
Variations: Nude (shown), Black, Black Patent,
Gold Flash, Sailor, Silver Flash

When it comes to combining style and comfort, nothing beats a chic pair of flats. So, what do you do when the little black flats you've been sporting all winter suddenly look heavy and opressive in the summer sun? Sandals just won't do for work or for pairing with dress pants, so aim for the middle ground.
Peep toe flats have the chic, dressy style of regular flats, but with a warm weather twist. Showing just a little toe will make peep toe flats look miles more appropriate in warm weather than their closed-toe counterparts. Don't have a pair of peep toe flats to call your own? Here are a few suggestions to help you find a pair that fits your style and your budget.
These Open Toe Flats from Dolce Vita (right) are a warm weather wardrobe staple. The simple, sleek shape is classic and they come in a range of colors, so you are sure to find a pair that matches your favorite fashions. My pick is the glossy Nude Patent. Such a gorgeous color!
Looking for a way to spice up your work week dress pants? I think that the Exchange by Charles David "Party" Flats (below) would look fabulous peeking out from under a pair of summer-weight wool trousers. They look stunning in Green-- which is the most expensive pair, of course! Prefer Black, Dark Brown, or Red? You're in luck. You can catch these adorable shoes, in every color except Green, on sale for half price at Overstock.com!

TREND: Saucy Animal Prints

Roberto Cavalli Leopard Print Dress$1,380.00
Free Shipping (code: MODE)
Available at: eLUXURY
How do you add instant sex appeal to any look, without resorting to baring it all in public? Conspicuously flaunting the goods is so passe, so why not indulge in a less obvious form of seduction. Channel your inner Ava Gardner and add a saucy animal print to your ensemble.
Just a touch of sultry leopard or slinky zebra makes any outfit look a little more daring, without baring an inch more skin. Want a touch more attention? Opt for a head to toe animal print and a knowing smirk on your face. Trust me, heads will turn.
Although animal prints are considered "trendy" of late, they are actually one of the true classic wardrobe choices. Animal print has been the go to fabric for instant sex appeal for decades or longer. See the Ava Gardner reference above for proof: how else could you make a full-cut, one piece swimsuit look so smoking hot?
Want to invest in an animal print dress that you will wear for years and years to come? The brand new Roberto Cavalli Leopard Print Dress (top right) is purrrfect. This knee-length, halter wonder is slinky and sexy, yet completely classy.
Zebra more your style? The Diane von Furstenberg "Julian" Mini Wrap Dress is as hot as it comes. To create this new classic, the hem of the iconic wrap dress was shortened while the v-neck was deepened. The result is simply stunning.

FOUND: Striped Handbags for Spring
There's no doubt that stripes are hot for spring, but wearing bands of color across your body isn't for everyone. Horizontal stripes can be mighty unforgiving if you're packing any extra weight and they can even make slender busty gals look like they are larger than life. That makes stripes one tough trend to handle. So, how do you get in on the trend, without risking falling victim to unflattering fashion? A spunky striped canvas bag is definitely the way to go.
These striped bags from Rampage are a fun way to effortlessly incorporate candy colored stripes into your spring wardrobe. The South Beach Hobo (left) is perfectly casual and really would be right at home on the beach or at a resort. The more structured South Beach Tote (right) will add a touch of whimsy to an otherwise crisp spring suit. As if you need a reason to shop for handbags, both of these spring-tastic finds are on sale.

Marc by Marc Jacobs "Fab Dee Dots" Flats$235.00

Available at: eLUXURY
Want to give a pair of the high end canvas flats a try? These "Fab Dee Dots" flats from Marc by Marc Jacobs feature an aged brass logo buckle and fringe detail. The toes are sweetly rounded, although the angle of photography makes them look a little pointy here, and the lining is in a contrast metallic leather with sueded lining at the heel for extra comfort. Tres chic. Tres Marc.
While there are many high-end canvas flats available this season, the prices drop off sharply from there. Lucky for those of us without a neverending clothing budget. These very affordable "Jenna" flats from Punkrose are a little more sassy than sweet and feature a fleur de lis detail that adds a trendy edge.

TREND: Get Striped!

Marc by Marc Jacobs Sig Stripe Tee$168.00
Available at: eLUXURY
Stripes, be they candy sweet or nautical sleek, are all over the spring fashion lines. Yes, horizontal stripes are a fashion pitfall waiting to happen, but the situation isn't as dire as you think. Choose your stripes wisely, and pair them with the right wardrobe basics, and you'll conquer this daunting springtime trend. Like most trends, this one isn't for everyone. Avoid horizontal striped shirts like the plague if you are top heavy or-- ahem-- "large chested." Oh, and, as a rule, horizontal stripes on pants only work if you are Kate Moss-skinny.
For stripes that are girly sweet a la Shirley Temple, Marc Jacobs is your man. This Marc by Marc Jacobs Sig Stripe Tee (top right) turns nautical stripes on their head by trading traditional navy and white for peacock and peach, while keeping a classic asymmetrical button-placket and oversized folded collar. How very Marc.
I had my doubts, but Twinkle proves that stripes can have an edge with this "Farrah" sweater. This cotton/cashmere blend creation gets a dose of designer chic from a unique stripe pattern that stops short of the hem and cuffs and a super slimming single vertical stripe that curves around the waistline. Genius.

TREND: Ease Into Yellow for Spring

D&G Dolce & Gabbana Chain Dress
$385.00
Available at: NeimanMarcus.com
Every season has an "it" color. It's that one color that managed to make it onto every runway, whether it was the main attraction or just a sideshow. This fall red was the color to have. Those who could rocked it head to toe; those of us who suffer from red phobia found other ways to work the strawberry hue (red shoes were my choice). New season, new it color. For spring, yellow-- in shades ranging from sunshine to marigold-- is the must-have color for your closet. Are you prepared? If you're like me, a thorough inspection of your wardrobe will reveal you're in yellow deficit. Time to rectify the situation before spring fashion hits its stride.
If you can pull it off, try a golden minidress, like this hot Chain Dress from D&G Dolce & Gabbana (right). The combination of the bright yellow color and modern bell shape is super fresh. How can you tell if a particular shade of yellow is right for you? There's no secret formula. Drape the article of clothing across both shoulders, up close to your face, and then carefully examine your face in a mirror in natural light. You'll know right away if the color is flattering or a disaster.
If you're a little shy about wearing a dramatic yellow from head to toe, try the same golden color in a cropped jacket. Cropped jackets, like this one from Rebecca Taylor, are a hot silhouette for spring and a great way to infuse an otherwise basic outfit with a burst of bright color.

TREND: The Little White Dress

Valentino Roma Macrame Dress
$1,695.00
Available at: NeimanMarcus.com
While the Little Black Dress is a timeless classic, it was also the height of of-the-moment fashion this fall. The return of the LBD to the top of the "trendy" list was a lot of fun, and sure made finding the perfect party dress easy, but come this spring it's going to be a whole new ballgame. C'mon, we knew it couldn't last. The fun of fashion it that is is always changing. The must-have dress for 2007 is-- drumroll please-- the Little White Dress.
That's right, white dresses. Stark white dresses were all the rage on the spring runways and the ready-to-wear designers have followed suit by producing LWDs by the barrel full. These new styles are just starting to trickle into the stores, so be sure to snap your spring staple LWD before the best styles are sold out. This will be your go-to dress throughout the spring and summer!
Want one of the LWD styles that sparked the trend? Be prepared to throw down some serious money. Our favorite of the lustworthy LWDs is the Valentino Roma Macrame Dress (above right). This sleek dress skirts the line between virgin and vixen with a level of high-fashion style that you only find from a label like Valentino.
Want the high fashion look without the high fashion pricetag? Sunner's "Florent" dress has a couture look thanks to a ruffle-edged super deep v-neck and low slung patch pockets. Thankfully, the price is low enough that we will still be able to afford the dry cleaning bill.
