I don’t mean to be picky. Really, I don’t. But have you ever noticed that most performance-oriented fitness gear is pretty unattractive?
I get that the purpose of real fitness clothing is to be comfortable and flexible, while keeping the sweat away from your skin. But, I just can’t get into a fitness regime if I feel dumpy, or masculine, or like I specialize in competitive suburban child-rearing (sorry, but you know that look). Finally, there’s a functional fitness label that gets what a fashionista wants out of her workout gear.
The new Heidi Klum for New Balance line strikes a perfect balance between gear you can really get down and sweat in, and a fashion-forward look that makes you feel amazing and stylish while you are working out.
I’m a big fan of the long-distance urban power walk as my exercise of choice. Give me five to seven miles of urban concrete and I’m set. Got hills or the occasional park landscape? All the better. And I definitely want to look fabulous, because it’s not like I’m hiding out in aisle three of the Stairmaster section at the gym. Plus, I won't lie, I work just a little bit harder when I look good.
I recently had the chance to try out a few essential pieces of the Heidi Klum for New Balance line. I found the mix-and-match layers to be both super functional and really fun to wear from a fashion point of view. The cuts are really flattering to a female body, but without compromising the non-binding fit you really need in good workout clothes. Check out a few of my favorite pieces, all of which can be fully mixed and matched to create a bunch of fabulous workout looks:
I’ve found that most high-tech workout tops are kind of boxy and utilitarian looking, particularly once you pair them with your standard sports bra. This Tunic Tee curves in at the waist and has a slightly asymmetrical hem that creates a sleek look that’s actually flattering.

These Tech Capris have a fitted, non-shiny fit that is quite flattering and very comfortable for walking/ running. The reflective inset at the bottom (a must for evening walks!) is color coordinated with a range of the HKNB tops, and is has a back zip pocket for your key that is set off to the side so it doesn’t get in your way during crunches. Nice touches, really.

If you are looking for a little more leg coverage, check out these Essential Tights. I love them for Barre or similar studio-based classes. It’s hard to tell from these pictures, but there are gathers at the lower leg that are super stylish and fun.

Ok, now that you’ve got the perfect workout look – both studio and street versions – you need something to top it off during warm-up/ cool-down and transit. This Coverup is exactly what you’ve been looking for. It’s super soft and comfy, with a curvy fit that is flattering. HKNB hits another details home run with the oversized hood, which you’ll actually want to use, and the thumb holes in the sleeves for extra cool morning coziness!
