Marc Jacobs Beauty: 5 Items Begging to Be Tried

Wednesday, August 14, 2013

After much lead up and anticipatory press, the new Marc Jacobs Beauty line has finally landed at Sephora. It’s just what I expected from Marc Jacobs – gorgeous, rich colors and subtly glam packaging.

I’ve been thumbing through the 20 offerings, which range from foundation and blush, to lips and nails, to makeup brushes. The collection even offers three items designed for men – colorless lip balm, concealer, and clear eyebrow tamer.

There’s just enough variety of color on the women’s side of the collection to be a little overwhelming, but I think I’ve got it nicely narrowed down to five items that – even after the tenth look-see – are still begging to be tried. Check them out…

Many of the pre-launch photos were of these pretty little rounded nail polish bottles. So, of course, the nail polish was my first stop in the new collection. I was instantly drawn to Baby Jane, an opaque light ash beige shade that just looks like a Marc Jacobs color to me. It’s an ideal daytime neutral that will work well year-round. Jezebel, a dramatic black cherry red, is a very close second.

There’s a cute little hand-drawn note on the Sephora website from Mr. Jacobs himself explaining that “everyone” does 5 or 6 shade eye shadow palettes, so he wanted to do a 7-shade palette. That’s definitely our win.

Each of the bonus-sized palettes offers a useful range of colors that include both daytime and nighttime shades. The ultra-neutral Lolita palette is my favorite simply because every shade is everyday useful.

The Blush in Naughty, a pale ivory pink, is another one of those shades that instantly reminds me of the fresh faces seen on the Marc Jacobs runway. It’s definitely more of a fall or winter shade, but I’m willing to wait. The pretty rose-colored Promiscuous will work well for the last days of summer.

I’ve already started hearing great things about the gender-neutral, SPF18 lip balm. Good news travels fast. I feel the need to try it out for myself, just to be sure. It’s so hard to resist the promise of a fabulous new lip balm.

Every time I try a new makeup line, the lip gloss is where I start. It’s a low-commitment way to dip a toe in the makeup waters. The Marc Jacobs lip gloss offering covers a lot of ground in just 6 colors – from pink, to berry, to red. I’m quite fond of Overprotected, a true pastel pink.

I’m getting ready to place my monthly Sephora order, and I think I’m going to go for the nail polish first. If I don’t get the eye shadow. Argh. Decisions, decisions! What about you? Which new Marc product are you itching to try?
