Summer Fashion: Sizzling Citrus Shades

Lime Green One Shoulder Sequin Dresses by Basix
Basix One Shoulder Dress

$390.00
Available at: edressme.com

I have written about tight sexy dresses, clutches and cardigans before, but this time my standout picks are in citrus shades-- sexy overload! Why not liven up an outfit with a touch of a bright color, or wear a nice lime green dress? Exactly. That's why these choices aren't just an article standout-- they will make you the standout and a knockout! With every color there is a price to pay, so with citrus colors you want to make sure not to wear an obscene amount of bright makeup, unless you're Barbie of course.

Glorinha Paranagua Straw Clutch w/ Bamboo Button
Glorinha Paranagua Straw Clutch

$192.50 (was $275-- save 30%!)
Available at: vivre.com

My tight dress pick is a sexy one shoulder dress that incorporates a lot of sophistication. The Basix Lime Green One Shoulder Sequin Dress is 100% silk chiffon, which adds a beautiful stylish flow to the dress. This girly dress is a mini, but it’s balanced out with the covered high one shoulder style. The one shoulder has a light glossy rhinestone beaded accent. I may have mentioned this before, but I'm not a big fan of one shoulder dresses on big-chested women-- it makes their shoulders look wider and takes away from the style of the dress. No offense big-chested women, I'm one of you. I wish I could pull this dress off. If you can, buy it!

Tracy Reese Appliqué Cardigan
Tracy Reese Applique Cardigan

$174.00
Available at: nordstrom.com

For those of you who have no tolerance and excitement for tight minis, or are big-chested, there is always this cutesy Glorinha Paranagua Straw Clutch with Bamboo Button bag. It fits the essentials and it comes in adorable warm weather tones. I recommend the yellow or green. I think the soft texture and the hand woven straw is a great addition to a light summery outfit. The clutch closes with a sassy bamboo closure and has accented crocodile. It also has a fully lined interior and a small pocket for the cell phone!

At last, let’s talk cardigan! This yellow and white Tracy Reese Appliqué Cardigan is very feminine and classy. It's a cardigan that doesn't scream grandma! It’s a shorter worn cardigan and looks lovely (as pictured) over a white top or something bold like turquoise or lime green! The cardigan's got a funky criss-cross design on the front with lace. The lace is sheer and a creamish color, allowing room to play with different colors and fabrics. The big pasty yellow rounded buttons are consistent with the funky lace look and finish off the cardigan beautifully.

Just like a vodka drink tastes and looks better with a splash and slice of lime, so will you!

Conair Asks "How Do You Reel It In?" - Hot Contest

Wednesday, May 27, 2009 • Permalink •

--By Jules Newmark

So today I went swimming as per my usual triathlon training, something I of course never really talk about here in the world of shopping bags and beauty, but there it is, I'm an amateur triathlete. So as far as training goes - my hair takes a beating between the chlorine, the helmet hair and of course the constant washing and pulling out of ponytails. I've tried all the products I can find to deep condition and make my hair look like the Pantene commercial... and this morning's attempt with a hair mask left much to talk about with you beauty-obsessed readers, let me tell you.

I mention this hair horror story in accordance with Conair's new promotion for their newest dryer - the Infiniti Conair Cord Keeper - which through Brickfish is promoting a contest by sharing your worst (or best of course) hair day pictures. The "How Do You Reel It In" campaign is promoting the new dryer to show how it could have saved them or maybe added to their gorgeous mop and offering prizes for the best entries. You can read all about this great opportunity to share as well as see hair nightmares at Brickfish.com/conair. The Grand Prize winner will become the "Ask the Expert" guest blogger on Conair.com and receive a $500 gift card and $300 Conair gift basket (I'm sure you'll receive the new fantastic Cord Keeper too...). Other prizes are awarded, so check it out.

This contest is interesting and so key for Conair as this creation of a mini social network is ranking entries based on how viral they are - in layman's terms, how much they've gotten around on the Internet and onto people's Twitters, IMs or personal blogs. So let's just say, I wish I would have had this blowdryer this morning with a hassle-free cord that I could just whip out at the gym to do a blow out before I realize that not all the hair mask had come out... My hair does look shiny - that's a positive... right?

Members Only Ripper Skinny Jean in Cornflower Blue and Mid Blue Wash - Taylor Momsen
Members Only Ripper Skinny Jean

$165.00
Available at: singer22.com

As I've watched the trendy denim get progressively more distressed, I've wondered when we'd get to a straight up '80s-style ripped jeans look. I believe that day has arrived... and I don't hate it as much as I thought I would. My memories of wearing ripped up jeans in middle school are more about slashed up knees and the occasional scandalous rip where the back pocket should be. This time around the distressing is more natural looking, and a little more artful than what a 6th grader with a pair of shears could pull off.

Gossip Girl cutie Taylor Momsen was recently snapped wearing a pair of skinny jeans that definitely hit the advanced end of the ripped and distressed continuum. Yes, the last time we saw serious ripping in jeans was the '80s, but the progression of distressing was bound to lead here and holes in your denim need not look like a throwback item. Paired with a modern drapey tee and super strappy heels, Taylor's jeans don't look the least bit retro.

Want to steal Taylor Momsen's super ripped jeans look for yourself? She's wearing the brand new Ripper Skinny Jean from Members Only. This new skinny jean is currently available on pre-order in Cornflower Blue and Mid Blue Wash (seen on Taylor). The combination of distressing and strategic ripping actually looks really fun-- perfect for a night out or shopping in the see-and-be-seen part of town. You know you're ready to take the plunge.

3 New Must-Have Summer Lip Products (from Avon!)

Monday, May 25, 2009 • Permalink •

--By Jules Newmark

ULTRA COLOR RICH Extra Plump Lipstick
Ultra Color Rich
Extra Plump Lipstick

$8.00
Available at: avon.com

Have you ever wondered about the world of Avon or Mary Kay when you see women’s cars with the stickers to call them for makeup? Or better yet, the pink Mary Kay Cadillac that signifies something – maybe top seller? Well, I had never been exposed to Avon before the other day, so I have always wondered about the seemingly secretive beauty biz. With a goal of being the company that best understands women’s beauty and other needs globally, Avon has been serving our needs since its small beginnings in 1886. But how do you get this big brand for yourself? Well, you can get it in more places that from just the Avon Lady – hello Avon.com!

So, after learning about Avon, I have three hot picks from Avon for the upcoming summer: the new Ultra Color Rich Extra Plump Lipstick, the upcoming SpectraColor Lipstick and the future Pro 3-in-1 Lip Wand. I had the premier opportunity-- thank goodness for this blogging gig-- to be a part of Avon’s recent “Lipcast,” a conference call-style discussion of the three new products with feedback from Jillian Dempsey, the Avon Global Creative Color Director. The discussion was fabulous to listen in on, as it was a peak into how these products even came to be… hello beauty insiders!

Let me first tell you about the lipstick. Have you tried a plumping lipstick recently? Overly tingly, doesn’t do much and wears off too quickly – right? Oh, and overpriced! The Ultra Color Rich Extra Plump Lipstick has a magical core that looks like a mini chapstick locked inside a lipstick. Lips tingle, but not too the point where you’re thinking you will have permanently bee-stung lips, and the color is gorgeous and smooth. Guess the price. No, you won’t believe it: $8... what? I recommend all 10 colors – especially Pink Sunset and Blond Ambition.

Avon Floral Delight Lip Gloss
Floral Delight Lip Gloss

$2.99 (was $4-- save 25%!)
Available at: avon.com

Then there was my favorite – the SpectraColor Lipstick. This is the one you take out in the morning and wear ALL day and night. The see-through tube shows two color sticks within – well these colors mix together, coming out through 38 nozzles to produce seven colors at each click of the SpectraDial Technology. This is a must-see product and of course, you have to have at least one of the color combos – there are 10, making 70 varieties of lip color, with Vitamins A, C and E nonetheless. This lip product is one to remember! “To make lips appear fuller, apply a darker shade first then click to the lighter shade and dab the center of you lower lip for eye-catching shine,” says Dempsey. Again, the affordability of this new item is pretty amazing: only $9.50 for the SpectraColor Lipstick, which will be released this June. It’s the most smooth and creamy color you’ll ever put on!

Last, but definitely not least, the Pro 3-in-1 Lip Wand. This is the answer to all the ladies’ need for a night out with a minuscule clutch. After a 4-year development process, Avon created the lip wand for the perfectly coordinated lip. Included in this smartly packaged wand are a lip pencil, a lipstick and a gloss – all that’s missing is a mirror! Now you can define your lips – please, stay in the lines – then enhance your lip color with lipstick and of course top it off with some gorgeous gloss for perfection. No glitter or plumping here girls, just classic colors like Berry or Red to make for the ultimate date lips. Jillian Dempsey’s favorite part is that there are three textures in one wand for the key product to take anywhere! The Pro 3-in-1 Lip Wand is available in July this summer for the low price of $9.50.

Don’t worry – you don’t need to hunt down your local Avon lady and start a business relationship with her. We know you already have that going with the Party Lite woman (who comes over once every few months for your candle parties) and the Pampered Chef and all the rest. Avon knows you’re a busy lady. Just go to Avon.com, all the answers are there for a beautiful you!

This week's American Idol finale was full of great surprises. Fabulous duets, excellent guest performances and that crazy ending. But, I have to admit, my favorite surprise was Kara DioGuardi's duet with Bikini Girl and Bikini Girl's-- um-- new friends. That just rocked.

Not only can Kara sing, but the girl has an amazing body. Who knew? I would have never guessed that Kara had a killer bikini body hidden under her fairly demure clothing choices. Next to Kara's all-natural gorgeousness, Bikini Girl looked like an overstuffed cheeto. Three cheers for Kara!

Lorac TANtalizer Award Show Glow - body firming bronzing mousse
Lorac TANtalizer Award Show Glow

$32.00
Available at: sephora.com

Looking tanned is always attractive; It gives a healthy appearance. I’m not talking that streaky, too dark fake tan look that some people seem to show off, but more of a subtle sexy summery glow that gives the illusion of flawless skin and all around beauty. Besides actually being healthy by eating right and working out, there are a few items that can help create a stunning sexy bronzed look.

Bronzers are a great help, but getting the right kind is key. I have always been loyal to Lorac bronzing products, but I love the new TANtalizer Award Show Glow body firming bronzing mousse even more than their previous bronzers! This anti-cellulite bronzer is awesome; it gives the appearance of flawless, non-bruised, perfect looking legs. You can use this bronzer anywhere, but I usually tend to use it mostly on my legs. My girlfriend Stacy uses it all over her body-- not face-- and it’s gorgeous. She wears it to the pool, and this stuff is water resistant which so cool-- why hesitate when it comes to jumping in the pool? It’s got a lot of shimmer but it doesn’t look tacky. The bronzing mousse is a gold-ish shimmer that is perfect on any skin color and helps create a smooth healthy looking glow.

Crest Advanced Seal Whitestrips Whitening Kit
Crest Advanced Seal Whitestrips

$22.95 (was $37.99-- save 40%!)
Available at: amazon.com

When it comes to the face, I’m very hesitant with bronzers because I’m scared I’m going to look like a tomato or pumpkin face, or that I’m going to break out and get all blotchy. Lorac has that down too! Lorac Bronzer face bronzing powder is a miracle. I use it all over, sometimes without any foundation, or I use it on just my cheekbones for a slight sun kissed look. I think you can play with this product. Use it after you already caught some sun or just use a thick brush and put it all over your face, neck and chest!

This may seem like an off the topic product to some of you, but really its not! I think Crest Advanced Seal Whitestrips are a must have! They add a knock-out smile to go along with beautiful sun kissed skin. Crest strips help a lot when it comes to getting that killer smile. Just remember to stay away from coffee and red sauces while you’re going through the 2 week whitening process. And when you’re feeling vampy and wearing that bright red or pink lipstick, try putting a little Vaseline on your top front teeth to give your pearly whites an extra flash.

Jay Godfrey Ivy Dress in Sapphire-PRE ORDER
Jay Godfrey Ivy Dress

$360.00
Available at: pinkmascara.com

Ok, was it just me, or did you do a total double take at the dress Serena van der Woodsen was wearing under her (non-existent) cap and gown on this week's Gossip Girl season finale? Leaving aside the fact that NYC private schools aren't known for actually indulging in traditional high school technicolor caps and gowns for graduation day, her dress was hilariously inappropriate. It was a floor-length semi-formal dress. It was meant for an evening out, not for peaking out from under a graduation gown!

Whew. Now that I've got that off my chest. Situation aside, the dress was gorgeous. Really gorgeous. The sapphire blue color is perfect for summer and the fit is body-conscious without giving it all away. I wouldn't advise wearing this dress under a graduation gown, but it would fit right in for a number of other festive situations.

Want to steal Blake Lively as Serena's graduation dress style for yourself? She's wearing the brand new Ivy Dress from Jay Godfrey. This dress is so spanking new that it's still on pre-order, but after this week's Gossip Girl finale I bet it sells out before it even hits the stores.

OPI BrightPair Collection 2009 - Shorts Story - Home Pedicure
OPI Shorts Story Polish

$5.99
Available at: amazon.com

Oh, economic downturn. It's hit this hardworking country of the American dream life a few times over the years - we always seem to push through and beyond it to reach a new level of extremes, but while it's happening, like now, times can be tough. So many people are unemployed, there are more people on public transportation, more homeless people, blah, blah blah.

While I know you're still going out to dinner and dancing at clubs, trying to hold on to the last bit of fun possible from the days of the carefree life, you're probably cutting back on some personal expenses. Are you getting your hair cut as frequently? (Little secret, I'm not, I know... don't judge me, I'm trying to grow it out!) Are you doing your own mini facials? Well if you're not at least having spa experiences in your own home, that needs to begin now. To start, you should know the rules to having a sanitary beginning, for let's say, a pedicure.

Bring out the alcohol... not the vodka or champagne, but the sanitizing kind and make sure your tools are clean as a whistle. Don't try to do your own miniature surgery and feel like you might be risking you life for a scene out of Grey's Anatomy - save those for a doc... just stick to scrubs, calluses, filing and painting your pretty piggies! This advice comes from Dr. Oliver Zong, an NYC podiatrist who does cosmetic foot surgery as the Director of Surgery at NYC Footcare. It's good to check out the pro's advice once in a while and make sure all you're doing at home is on par with what might cost you $50 these days and not even be so sanitary, that is in the pedicure world. One more piece of foot news - new polishes... OPI's Shorts Story is a fabulous pink and the bright orangey color On the Same Paige - these are must haves for the summer. Get going girls, sandal time is here!

How To: Buy and Apply False Eyelashes

Sephora Flirt-It Lash Duo - False Eyelashes
Sephora Flirt-It Lash Duo

$8.00
Available at: sephora.com

Eyes are windows to the soul, and when lashes are defined and thick, everyone will want to get to know your soul… unless you are Buddhist, because they do not believe in a soul. But, they may secretly wish they had your lashes. False eyelashes have always seemed like such a pain in the butt to me, until this past Saturday. I had to liven up my look and I did just that with some stunning false lashes. They didn’t look fake on me, but they were very impressive and had people wondering.

Some of you may share my old fears. You too might get anxiety about putting on the lashes and worry about them coming off during dinner or dancing. That wouldn’t be nice, and rather embarrassing. I remember when I was 16 and thought it would be cool to wear false eyelashes to a party, until I was talking to my crush and he realized that I had half my false lashes stuck to the crease of my eyelid. I was horrified! I was so traumatized by the experience that I gave up false lashes for 9 years. Anyway, that won’t happen to you, I promise. I’m going to give a few instructions that will help you put on lashes without fear, and help you find the perfect pair of lashes to make you look gorgeous.

First you want to measure the false lashes to your natural lashes and cut them shorter with small scissors if they are too wide. Next, you want to take the lashes and place a thin layer of glue on with a toothpick, wait 20 seconds, and take the lashes with your two index fingers or tweezers and place them on your natural lash line in order to have them look natural and stay on. Use your index fingers to put the lashes on, position them, and let the two corners of your eye help guide you. Press down with your fingers once you have the lashes in the proper position. If not, move them to get them in the correct spot and directly on your natural lash line. Don’t hesitate if you mess up, just take them off and re-do it. Practice makes perfect.

Sonia Kashuk Full Glam Eye Lashes with Glue - False Eyelashes
Sonia Kashuk Full Glam Eyelashes

$9.99
Available at: target.com

Now let’s move along and go over some sexy, classy and sparkly false lashes that are worth buying and trying! My first pick is the Flirt-It Lash Duo from Sephora. This is a diverse kit with two kinds of lashes: half lash strips and full lash strips. This is great because you get to use the half strips for the outer corner of the eye, for that sexy vamp look without being too dramatic. The full strip will be more of a statement. Your choice whether you want to create a softer or sexy fluttery look. Both are needed, that’s why this combination is perfect to have around.

Next, is a sexy pair of Sonia Kashuk dark lashes. These Sonia Kashuk Full Glam Eye Lashes are dark lashes that will add a lot of volume and body for those who are yearning for sexy, full exotic lashes that they can bat on a dinner date. They’re simply stunning!

Just for fun and spunk, I like these Xtended Beauty Dazzler Strip Lashes. They are sparkly, long, and full bodied dark lashes that will turn heads. I like how the sparkles are dispersed randomly-- giving the lashes a mystical look. Great for a girl’s night out! Xtended dazzler eyelashes will add fun and glitz to an evening.

Whether she's wearing some chic boots or a scarf, the woman has a touch of downtown, beachy/urbanness that's almost too great to call one style. A put together mess one might say, but others know, this woman is hot on the trail of the trends and changes them to make the most sense for her.

That being said, sometimes a hair-do can be the end all factor in a perfect outfit. Many woman don't know what to do with their tresses and end up in a wanna-be style that doesn't suit them or their mirror. A great look is the head scarf. Now don't think a do-rag, beanie, turban or any of the above. This is a look simply accomplished by tying a scarf through the hair or around like a headband. Bonita Sands recognized the same people and created her own line of hair scarves called ABonita.

ABonita are so popular that a line of swimsuits and cover-ups will come along with the scarf that appeals to active women who are looking to change their whole wardrobe with one accessory addition.
