FOUND: Fall's Trendy Oversize Handbags Now!

Saturday, July 29, 2006

The fashion gods have spoken and come this fall the handbag we will all be coveting is an oversized leather hobo. The bags from the fall collections are gorgeous-- wide expanses of buttery leather in dark neutrals and rich jewel tones with plenty of room for those of us who feel the need to shlep our entire life around with us. Gone will be the days of needing a separate handbag and tote to get all of our stuff to work!

Stealing a page from the Mary-Kate and Ashley book of style, these bags are slightly boho and very glam. I just can't wait any longer. I'm determined to get a jump on the new season by ferreting out the perfect oversized bag right now!

I have searched and I have screened and, over 1300 handbags later, I have narrowed it down to these fine specimens. My only problem now is figuring out which one (or two, or three) to choose. The Open Trails bag from J.P. Ourse & Cie is the perfect shade of deep green and looks so soft that I want to reach out and touch it.

It will be perfect to pair with layered sweaters, jeans, and flats on the weekend. For work, the more structured Jordan by Goldenbleu will go from the boardroom to cocktails without batting an eye. It's an investment piece, that's for sure, but it has a classic look that will transition easily from season to season.

The budget category is won, hands down, by Adi Designs' Criss-Cross hobo. This peppy blue wonder is genuine leather and a steal at only $21.99, marked down from $50. It will be a perfect match for less serious clothes and will add a spark to weekend basics.

Another great budget find is the Downtown shoulder bag in "shiny dark coffee". The color is perfect for day or night and the leather-free construction makes it vegan friendly. I'm seeing this tote paired with a spare tank and inky dark jeans for a night out.

For a great basic bag, I'm loving this Derek Alexander Large Open Hobo. It's no-nonsense look will anchor fall's irreverent plaids and won't upstage sleek ensembles. Rounding out my top picks is this basket weave leather confection from Bulga. The deep chocolate color looks good enough to eat and the amazing details on the Large Studded Tote are the kind that you can only find on a top quality handbag.

Fall may be months away, but these handbags have me already dreaming of plush sweaters and flippy princess coats. I'm snapping up these finds before the rush for all things oversized hits hard and I'm stuck with the leftovers!
