Thakoon for Kohl’s Has Landed; Here’s What to Buy

Tuesday, September 08, 2015

The latest “high fashion for the masses” designer collab hit the shelves this week. Thakoon for Kohl’s DesigNation is now available for purchase online, and will be available in stores on September 10. Sure, it’s highly anticipated, but is it worth buying?

I struggle with mass-market collaborations. It’s a great idea, but the execution often turns me off. I hate cheap fabric. Acrylic is a particular turn off, with poorly made polyester coming in a close second. So, the question for me is always whether the design and overall construction can eclipse the use of inferior fabrics.

I scoured the new Thakoon for Kohl’s collection online, zooming in on pics and carefully considering the fabric details. The result? A handful of pieces that seem to be the standouts of the collection. Here’s my “what to buy” list. If you find yourself adding a few items to your online shopping cart, be sure to use coupon code CATCH15OFF to save 15% off your order of $100 or more.

Outerwear is one area where a hearty synthetic fabric can be useful. Sure, I love my cashmere coat, but I don’t exactly want to wear it in a rain storm. Conversely, this polyester/ acrylic blend plaid jacket is both stylish and ready to face inclement weather. The high-low hem reminds me of OAK’s chic signature fencing hoodies, and the gray/ blue plaid is subtly on-trend. A close second in the outerwear department? The Hooded Flannel Coat with its cream/ black/ pink plaid and toggle closure.

These simple ponte leggings are a thoughtful addition to the collection. Details like front pockets and back seams are similar to what you’d expect from a higher-end legging, and they are available in three different inseam lengths for a perfect fit.

This rayon-blend sweater will be tricky to wash, despite the claim that it is “machine washable.” But, it’s clearly the most iconic piece from the London-themed collection and I love the way it adds a touch of cheek when layered over a classic button-down shirt. It’s also available in black with a white “London” graphic.

If you want real warmth from your scarf, synthetic fabrics are actually quite desirable. So, this acrylic scarf will be perfect for cold winter days. This black and white skyline version is my top pick, but it also available in a heather gray version with a print similar to the sweater above.

I’m not big on prints, but I find this black and white abstract plaid print dress enjoyable. For those of us who are past our mini-dress years, I suggest wearing it as a tunic. I’d also probably roll up the sleeves or add a slim blazer to break up the print a bit.

In the video above, Thakoon himself calls out the tee shirts as one of his favorite pieces. I can see why. The three different prints encapsulate his irreverent approach to the London theme. I like the idea of this bus print under a blazer. And, yes, we grown-ups can wear graphic tees…as long as they are styled appropriately.
