Fall Splurge: The Camel Coat

Wednesday, August 31, 2016

This post is part of our ongoing series on the must-have fashion splurges for Fall 2016.

My first “grown up” coat was a camel-colored wool car coat from J.Crew (similar here), from back when J.Crew was still creating investment-quality classics. It was a divine coat. Chic. Effortless. Went with everything. I miss that coat.

While I’m all for building a diverse outerwear wardrobe, if I was asked to pick one fall coat style on which to splurge, I’d go with a camel coat. This timeless coat style will look just as nice over a suit as a cocktail dress, and will be as warm as it is good looking. Check out my favorite splurge-worthy camel coats for fall…

First up, my absolute favorite coat of any kind from the fall collections. This double-face wool coat has a slightly cocoon shape and dropped shoulders, which add just enough drama to make the old-school style modern.

Speaking of modern, this soft camel-colored wool coat from See by Chloé has a standout look. Those faux-leather buttons are just fabulous.

See by Chloé Wool Long Coat

→ Buy the See by Chloé Wool Long Coat, $925.00, at ssense.com.

A single button closure makes this swingy coat a bit more casual, and best suited to environments that don’t require you to bundle up tight against sub-zero temps.

Fleurette Wool Felt Single Button Coat

→ Buy the Fleurette Wool Felt Single Button Coat, $1,025.00, at neimanmarcus.com; shipping and returns are free.

If there is such a thing as an “affordable splurge,” this coat is it. The wool/ cashmere blend is more luxurious than many camel coats in the contemporary genre, but the price is shockingly at the lower end of high-end coats.

Theory Oaklane DF Divided Open-Front Trench Coat

Now if you want to really splurge on a camel coat, go for one that’s actually made from camel hair. There aren’t many to be found online, but Valentino comes through for fall. This 100% camel hair coat features a notch collar that is detailed with those famous Valentino rockstuds. Edgy + Plush = Divine.

Valentino Studded Camel Hair Coat

→ Buy the Valentino Studded Camel Hair Coat, $5,890.00, at nordstrom.com; shipping and returns are free.
