3 Must-Have Travel Shoes for Your Next Vacation

Sunday, June 12, 2016

--Guest Post By Meg Gillette

So you’re planning your epic vacation, and you need to figure out what’s going in your bag. Whether you’re packing a huge suitcase for a week at the beach, or trying to condense three months’ worth of essentials into a backpack to trek across multiple countries, your footwear will be one of your most essential considerations as you pack.

Good shoes for traveling need to look cute and feel great, but they also need to serve multiple wardrobe functions and take up as little space as possible in your bag. Here are the three main types of shoes that should accompany you on each and every journey.

1. Sturdy Walking Shoes

Don’t cringe! The days when “sturdy walking shoes” meant “ugly sneakers” are thankfully long behind us. These days, there are plenty of fashion-forward options that are just as fashionable as they are comfortable and will have you walking around quaint downtown areas or trekking among ancient ruins in perfect (and blister-free) style.

Loving This Week: Summer City Travel Essentials

Monday, May 11, 2015

Longchamp Tote - Travel Sonic Toothbrush - F1 Quart Bag - New York Times Travel Book - New Balance Sneakers - Birkenstock Sandals

For the past couple weeks I’ve been planning a mid-summer trip to NYC to visit the Van Goghs. And, of course, trip planning means it’s time to take stock of the travel necessities that seem to be missing from my wardrobe and toiletry kit. I’ve been tracking down perfect travel essentials, and I ran across a handy helper for planning future adventures in the process.

Here’s what’s taking up space in my online shopping cart this week…

1. Longchamp Le Pliage Neo Tote, $180.00
Over the weekend I introduced my mom to the wonder that is Longchamp nylon. When you need a lightweight bag, but still want something classy and upscale, Longchamp is the way to go. The whole episode got me thinking, I really would love a Longchamp tote for travel. It would be a welcome replacement for the super heavy, and super hard to clean, leather tote I’ve been using for years.

Oh, and wouldn’t it be great if it was on sale? Done and done. We’ve rounded up five smart travel flats that fulfill all of the above. Check them out…

These Cole Haan flats are perfect for an urban adventure where you will be doing a lot of walking. Review: Cenoire Novo Atomizer Mist Spray Makes Facial Hydration Easy

Thursday, June 06, 2013

--By Kim Moshtaghi

Cenoire Novo Atomizer Mist Spray
For those of you who travel for work, or like to refresh your skin by maintaining moisture, you may definitely be interested in the Cenoire Novo Atomizer Mist Spray.

The easiest comparison to this spray would be the Evian Mineral Water Spray. These types of sprays insure your skin stays refreshed through travels, a hike, or ordinary daily activities. But, there are two main differences between these products. First, the Cenoire atomizer spray is reusable, where the Evian is a one-time spray. Second, the Cenoire is a hardy gadget that requires only 4 AAA batteries and comes with an extra water refill bottle, while the Evian spray is a standard disposable spray bottle.

The Cenoire Novo Atomizer spray provides skin with deep moisture “by atomizing water molecules and spraying gentle mist that could effectively penetrate into basal skin.” You can use it as a quick spray when you need a little refresher or you can select the auto shut off function that provides moisture for up to 4 minutes.

Spring in the City: What To Pack For A Spring City Vacation

Thinking of jetting off to the urban jungle for your Spring break? Check out my guide for day-to-night style in three of the world's best dressed cities.

London

Spring appears to have got lost en route to London this year, so if you're headed to The Big Smoke- pack plenty of layers. To perfect the quirky, indie, Brit style take inspiration from British style icons such as Alexa Chung and Kate Moss.

What to Pack for a City Vacation - London in Spring

For daytime, I've styled a braces skirt and pork pie hat for a quintessential English look, with a vintage inspired jumper and a classic satchel in neon coral for an on trend twist. A chunky heeled ankle boot is a stylish and practical footwear choice for looking fabulous whilst stomping around town.

For an evening look that'll take you from dinner to drinks and beyond, I've gone for girly, glam rock chick with some ultra trendy disco pants and a pretty art deco style top. Avoid strappy sandals or peep toes (unless you want frozen feet) and pack a pair of glitzy shoe boots instead.

How To Pack The Ultimate In-Flight Beauty Kit

Monday, March 18, 2013

--Guest Post By Ava Watkins

Sunny getaway on the horizon? We all deserve to take some time out from work, now and again, and nothing puts a spring in our step like the prospect of leaving behind the chilly weather and hightailing to an exotic locale.

Everything has been booked, organised, and packed in anticipation of days spent lounging on the beach; your outfits have been perfectly orchestrated in advance. All you need now is the perfect travel-friendly beauty kit to keep you looking at your best on those sultry beach evenings.

Take Only The Essentials
With all the sunbathing and relaxation on your agenda, you don’t need anywhere near as much makeup as usual. Embrace your natural glow and take only the basics: simple skincare products are obviously a must, otherwise just pack a slimline makeup palette, foundation, something for your lips, and a mini mascara. Oh, and don’t forget the sun cream! Done.

3 Top Tips for Stress Free Vacation Packing

Monday, July 16, 2012

--Guest Post By Kat

It’s that time of year again, time to drag the suitcase out from the bottom of the wardrobe and start planning your vacation wardrobe. For many this is the highlight of their year, shopping and putting together outfits for each day of a two week break, for others it is something to be avoided until they really have no choice but to start packing.

I used to be in the latter category until I suddenly realised that I was going about packing all wrong. After years of going over my baggage allowance and returning home with clothes that were never worn, I decided enough is enough and took on a new packing strategy. If you have yet to get started on your vacation wardrobe here are my top tips for stress free suitcase filling!

1. Carefully Create Outfits
First of all try everything on before you put it into the case, I often grabbed handfuls of clothes and threw them in on the off chance that I would have an opportunity to wear them. If you try clothes on and put together complete outfits you will soon start to save space as you realise that your ball gown is just not suitable for a week in Ibiza!

5 Tropical Travel Must-Haves You Didn't Know You Needed

Thursday, June 28, 2012

I recently returned from a mini-break in Nuevo Vallarta -- Puerto Vallarta's luxe, timeshare-filled northern neighbor. It was my first tropical vacation in a good long while, and the weather was definitely different from my usual trip -- hot and very humid, with nightly torrential thunderstorms. It was immediately apparent that normal fashion and beauty routines were not going to fly. The experience got me thinking about the real must haves for fashionable tropical travel.

Nuevo Vallarta - Grand Luxxe Pool - June 2012
My vacationing toes, at the main pool at the Grand Luxxe - Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico

Like you, I've read plenty of magazine articles that offer up suggestions like waterproof mascara, anti-humidity hair gel and 5-inch espadrille wedges for your humid, warm-weather trip. Reality check: if you are anything like me, you will not want to wear mascara or hair gel, or teeter around on 5-inch heels, on vacation. That's just silly. So, here's my list of tropical vacation must haves...the real ones.

Band-Aid Blister Block
Sticky weather means that your rubber flip-flops will grab your skin and rip it right off. No matter how used to flip-flops your feet are, they will fall prey to the unforgiving rubber straps once the humidity level starts inching up. This miracle-working waxy stick will save your feet from that ugly (and painful) fate. It has also come in quite handy in New Orleans and NYC in the summer.

Band-Aid Blister Block Stick

→ Buy the Band-Aid Blister Block Stick, $5.25, at amazon.com.

Avon Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard Plus
I've been in love with this stuff since my mom loaded me up with it before a summer in Florence, Italy. It's the ultimate tropical vacation multi-tasker. In one application you get a much-needed bug repellent, SPF 30 and a light moisturizer. It's PABA and DEET-free, and actually smells kind of nice.

Traveling Well Part 2: Perfect Accessories

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

--By Kim Moshtaghi

In my last post, I highlighted great luggage pieces can get you from point A to B and back again, with proper protection and style. In this post, I will highlight the accessories you need while you are actually enjoying your vacation.

When you are strolling the streets and exploring a foreign city, it is nice to have an accessible cross-body bag to prevent theft. Whether you are on a bus or train, this is the perfect bag to have on you. I found a cute Coach bag that comes in several different styles and variations. They are all great because they have a couple different compartments and zip on top. The Sutton Signature Swingpack is great for light travel and keeps everything safe and in one small place. Enough space for travel essentials.

Coach Sutton Signature Swingpack

→ Buy the Coach Sutton Signature Swingpack, $128.00, at coach.com.

Next up are a pair of easy to slip on sneakers that make exploring easy and comfortable. Whether you are going to see ancient ruins or walking a great distance to immerse in a culture, I love the Puma hook and loop closure sneakers. They easily slip on and off, making them a wise travel choice. I like the black color because you don’t have to worry about getting them dirty.

Traveling Well Part 1: Luggage + Style

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

--By Kim Moshtaghi

Good travel wear is important to get for the summer months. Whether you’re planning a weekend trip, or if you have the luxury to take a two week vacation, packing the proper, convenient attire is crucial. Packing wrinkle-resistant travel wear in a sturdy suitcase is mandatory for a proper vacation. For example, two travel bags ripped on me in the past and the results were disastrous. Trust me, when you’re hopping around from city to city with a ripped bag or a broken wheel your situation will feel nightmarish.

Good suitcases are very expensive and that’s exactly why I never bought them. I always opted for the $50-$100 suitcases, but they could barely make it out of an international trip alive. I suggest dishing out for a quality suitcase with warranty (keep receipt and tags) and it will last you ten years or more.

I love Tumi because their bags are durable and reliable. This particular Ducati style bag is fierce looking and functional. The four wheeled polycarbonate exterior shell with the soft and flexible fabric front panel will go anywhere smoothly without breaking a nail or hurting your back, and that’s how any lady should roll -- stylish and comfortable.

→ Buy the Tumi + Ducati Quattroporte 4 Wheeled Extended Trip, $695.00, at tumi.com.

I love being able to look like I tried, but effortlessly slide something on. This cut out back maxi dress is perfect. I love how nice it is and how it’s easy to pack. Of course, I am assuming this is not a work trip. I just love this dress’s potential. With the appropriate cuff and earrings, this dress can really transition well into the evening.

Jo Malone Candle Collection

Who: The business traveler

What: Jo Malone Candle Collection

Why: There are few things as unglamorous as a businessperson's hotel. If you often travel for work, you know what I mean. Almost invariably these hotels have the word "suites" in their name, which generally just means there's a kitchenette so that you can pretend that you are not living out of a suitcase. It never works. These dark, stale hotel rooms are enough to make you reconsider your profession. But, oddly, the who experience is made dramatically better with the addition of a travel candle.

I'm sure you've heard or read about starlets traveling with their favorite overpriced candle. There is a reason: it helps. And this 6-piece Jo Malone Candle Collection can serve the same purpose for the business traveller on your gift list. Featuring travel-perfect 1.05 oz. versions of Jo Malone's best-loved candle scents -- Lime Basil and Mandarin, Grapefruit, Pomegranate Noir, Nectarine Blossom and Honey, Orange Blossom Cologne, and Wild Fig and Cassis -- this set is all that is needed for a dramatically better business travel experience.

→ Buy the Jo Malone Candle Collection, $85.00, at nordstrom.com; use code HOLIDAY10 for free shipping on orders of $100+.

Gift This: Sofia Cashmere Travel Set

Sofia Cashmere Travel Set
Who: The constant traveler

What: Sofia Cashmere Travel Set

Why: Traveling, particularly in coach, is hardly a super fun experience. Seats are cramped, hard and smelly. Airlines upcharge for everything from checking luggage to purchasing snacks. Flight attendants are quickly joining the ranks of official disgruntled workers. Ugh. If only we could sprout wings and take care of the flying ourselves.

The wing sprouting isn't going to happen anytime soon, and flying anything short of first class isn't going to get more enjoyable anytime soon. But, this super luxe Cashmere Travel Set from Sofia Cashmere will help. A lot.

This cozy set features a 36" x 60" cashmere blanket and a matching cashmere eye mask, all tucked into a convenient cashmere carrying case. It's available in 3 colors, all of which are quite unisex. Mmm, cozy.

→ Buy the Sofia Cashmere Travel Set, $300, at saks.com; get free shipping with code HOLIDAYS through 12/6.

Spring Fashion Fling: 5 Trends to Try

Wednesday, April 01, 2009

sponsored by:
Fling Chocolate

There are so many distinctive trends for Spring that it's hard to know where to start when it comes to building an updated Spring wardrobe. It's also a little confusing, given that some trends seem to cancel one another out. Do you go pastel or super bright? Ruffles or utilitarian chic? Hobo or structured bag? What's a haute girl about town to do?

As we head into the Spring season everyone is still trying to guess which of forecasted trends will show actual staying power. Although they all sound like fun, only a handful of Spring's standout styles are really worth your hard earned dollars. These chic styles are supremely wearable, but suitably glamorous, and will see you through Spring and into Summer with style. It's time for a spring fashion fling!

Florals
Boden Riviera Dress
Boden Riviera Dress

$98.00
Available at: bodenusa.com

Floral prints are everywhere for spring. This is definitely one of the most pervasive spring trends, but luckily it is also one of the most wearable. From super girly-girl florals, to more artistic takes on flowers, to florals with almost tomboy appeal, you can find a floral for any taste. This simple green floral Riviera Dress from Boden is tops on my list. It's chic and grown up, with a super flattering cut.

Exotic Skins
Christian Louboutin Python Pumps
Christian Louboutin Python Pumps

$1195.00
Available at: saks.comicon

Given the dismal economic times, it would seem that there's no accounting for the popularity of pricey exotic skins. But, a second thought reveals exotic skins as a smart move. When times are tough, it makes perfect sense to invest in pieces that will stand the test of time. Exotic skins are never out of style. Whether you opt for luxe natural python-- like these luscious Christian Louboutin Python Pumps-- or an affordable little faux accessory, or something in between, exotic skin is a trend that's for real.

Cropped Trousers
Elizabeth and James Kingstone Trousers
Elizabeth and James "Kingstone" Trousers

$275.00
Available at: shopbop.com

After seasons and seasons of making sure that your trousers fell perfectly over the heel of your shoe, it does feel kind of odd to be flaunting a pant leg that hits at the ankle. But, after you get used to the silhouette, the cropped trouser is definitely one of the most enjoyable trends of the spring. The new shape-- fuller through the thigh, tapered at the ankle-- is a hard shape to embrace, but it creates a striking silhouette and shows off your shoes like nothing else. These luxe cropped trousers from Mary-Kate and Ashley's Elizabeth and James line are perfect for more casual occasions. For a work appropriate version, check out the new cropped trousers from Marc by Marc Jacobs or Paige Black Label.

Statement Necklaces
Gerard Yosca Pink Drape Necklace
Gerard Yosca Drape Necklace

$370.00
Available at: maxandchloe.com

There's no faster way to perk up a tired fall outfit than by adding a dramatic statement necklace. This is the one accessory you absolutely must have for spring. Luckily, this is also the one trend where you can find truly standout pieces at all price points. This beautiful Gerard Yosca necklace would turn a powder blue button down work shirt into a date-worthy top. For more affordable options, check out the new Erickson Beamon for Target line or the necklace options available at Lulus.com.

Bright Colors
Diane von Furstenberg Caroline Cardigan
Diane von Furstenberg "Caroline" Cardigan

$385.00
Available at: nordstrom.com

Bright colors might be the most polarizing of all spring trends-- either people love the super brights, or they stay far away. I used to be in the far away camp, until I was gifted a bright pumpkin colored cashmere cardigan. I had no idea what I was missing! Bright color lifts your mood and draws the compliments. Here's a hint for doing it right: don't ignore your skin tone. Not all brights are created equal and not all brights will look good on all people. Take the time to try on a few shades before committing to a purchase.

Packing for Travel: Multi-Tasking Fashions

Thursday, March 19, 2009

--By Kim Moshtaghi

Women: Knit legging - Black
Banana Republic Knit Legging

$34.00
Available at: bananarepublic.com

As I mentioned in my previous post, over packing is the number one mistake when traveling. It is too easy to throw a bunch of things in a suitcase and feel like you have gotten the job done... until you reach your destination and realize you have nothing substantial to wear. It happens to me all the time. Just last week I went on a business trip to St. Louis and all I concentrated on packing was accessories-- it was crazy! I had two pencil skirts and a bunch of useless tops that I had to wear and get by with for 5 days! It was awful.

Meanwhile, I have researched and promised myself that the next trip-- next week-- will go much smoother. So, the obvious helpful hint is to make a list, but it is also important to pack clothes that are appropriate, yet low maintenance. Wrinkle resistant clothes are low maintenance because they avoid having to iron on a business trip, which can be a drag, especially if you are on a constant time crunch.

Style and co. Boyfriend Cardigan
Style&Co. Boyfriend Cardigan

$54.00
Available at: macys.com

Clothing that can be mixed and matched is the best way to pack when traveling for any occasion. Darker colors, such as navy and black, and earth tones are great because they go with one another, creating multiple outfits from a few pieces of clothing. This keeps your luggage light and simple.

First and foremost, it’s smart and beneficial to travel with a pair of thick leggings. It’s great because they can be worn underneath a large sweater or cardigan while on the plane to keep you warm and comfy. They always come in handy when traveling, especially if you want to wear them out underneath a skirt or while working out. Leggings, like these Banana Republic Knit Leggings, are very versatile and useful-- that’s why they are perfect for travel.

Calvin Klein Split Neck Ponte Knit Dress
Calvin Klein Knit Dress

$118.00
Available at: nordstrom.com
icon

Secondly, I always like to have a loose fitting classy cardigan to wear with my pencil skirts or leggings, or just over a nice business appropriate dress. A plain loose fitting cardigan in a dark color is helpful because you will end up wearing it a couple of times with different things. Plus, it creates a polished sophisticated look, while keeping you warm. I spotted a nice black v-neck boyfriend cardigan from Macys. This Style&co. Boyfriend Cardigan is made from a lightweight material, with front buttons and patch pockets. The buttons and pockets add some style, without taking away from its versatility. It will hardly take up space in your luggage, which is great.

Lastly, I found an adorable, wrinkle resistant Split Neck Ponte Knit Dress from Calvin Klein. I love it because its business appropriate and won’t need to be ironed. The dress comes in black and white. I obviously recommend the black for travel, but the white is very nice! The dress has some pleating in the front, giving it a fashion flare. According to the site, the dress tends to run larger around the bust, so watch out for that and order the appropriate size.

Packing for Travel: Beauty Finds & A Perfect Bag

Tumi Voyageur Zebra Brown Ravello 20
Tumi "Voyageur" 20" Carry On

$695.00
Available at: tumi.com

Over packing has always been one of my downfalls and the biggest mistake for most people when traveling. Packing light is a hard thing for women to master, especially getting it down to packing efficiently. The smartest thing is to have a checklist prior to leaving on a trip, that way you aren’t leaving anything out and it prevents you from spending last minute money at the airport.

The best thing is to carry-on at all times, but that seems to be a difficult task for women, especially because we have so many products that have to fit under the 3 oz. TSA requirement. A very important part of traveling is having appropriate luggage that can resist ripping after being tossed around. I recommend Tumi bags, because they are multi-purpose bags that are durable and reliable. Once you in invest in one Tumi bag, I think you will start buying their entire line of products because they are so functional.

Women's Travel Kit - travel size toiletries, TSA compliant
Women's Travel Kit

$9.00
Available at: travelproducts.com

The Tumi bag I suggest is the expandable Tumi Voyageur 20" Wheeled Carry-on bag. It will fit almost all airline carry on measurements and it is lightweight nylon with leather trim, making it easy to maneuver. The zebra brown pattern makes it easy to spot in case you decide to check the bag in. The bag features an adjustable-height telescoping handle and accessory pockets, making small items easy to store and accessible.

I found an awesome site that carries all kinds of travel kits to make traveling a much more enjoyable and simple experience. The site is TravelProducts.com, and it started in 1996, carrying everything from adaptors to toiletries. I like the Women’s Travel Kit for $9. It is a conveniently sealed, crush resistant plastic container that has important daily essentials in it. It includes: Lady Speed Stick, a small packet of shaving cream, a disposable razor, pink folding comb, Aloe Vera hand and body lotion, Salon Selectives hairspray, Colgate toothpaste, and a travel toothbrush. For $9, it has it all covered in a small non-space consuming package.

CHI Mini Flat Iron and Dryer Collection
CHI Mini Flat Iron & Dryer Kit

$99.95 (was $150-- save 33%!)
Free Shipping
Available at: folica.com

Lastly, I know how important it is for us ladies to have our hair in order and tamed at all times. The hard part is being able to fit our hair dryer and flat iron in a suitcase. A lot of times I have to make the tough decision between the dryer or flat iron. I found a helpful life changing CHI traveling kit that will brighten your next trip and have your hair looking as good as it would if you stayed home. This CHI Mini Flat Iron and Dryer Collection even includes a travel bag, which is awesome to use for anything and keeps everything organized in one place. The CHI kit includes: a mini ceramic flat iron, mini hair dryer, Infra Shampoo, Infra Treatment, Silk Infusion, and 44 Iron Guard.

Hopefully my recommendations will make traveling a whole lot easier and less stressful for you. Next up, packing made easy-- less clothing, more outfit options.

SALE: Stella McCartney for LeSportsac 40% Off

Stella McCartney / LeSportsac night poly 22'' roll away travel carry on
Stella McCartney/ LeSportsac Carry On

$237.00 (was $395-- save 40%!)
Available at: bluefly.com

Stella McCartney for LeSportsac, now in its third season, is billed by LeSportsac as a natural collaboration. After all, both labels are known for using materials from exclusively non-animal sources and both labels take a fashion-forward approach to design, albeit in their own special way. Really, I think it's just interesting to see a very designer take on everyday totes. Not interesting enough to pay full price, but that's rarely necessary.

Online designer outlet Bluefly.com has just added 12 different Stella McCartney for LeSportsac bags, and each one is priced 40% off. If your toting needs are minimal, try the Classic Carryall Large Shoulder Bag. It's available in 3 colors and priced at just $150, regularly $250. If you are in the market for a new travel carry on, the soft sided Stella McCartney/ LeSportsac version (pictured here) is one of my favorites of the pack. It's available in 5 colors, including this versatile charcoal grey.
